board metal 620 because we can all tweak bases on a metal board.
kickers modify but limit length of field goals
bases any base ever produced for ef.
figures any figures designed for ef.

I think the weight issue will be the most difficult to overcome. Not only is it controversial, it would be difficult to enforce. Last year's Miggle tournament had 64 teams. How much time would it take to weigh all those teams?

Now I won't be able to sleep tonight, thanks a lot Wolf!

All the choices.......my mind is boggled already.

This concept is all new to me. But then again, all I'd ever played before last year was 30 plus years of solitaire and an occasional game with friends growing up. Then the Tornado Alley League was formed and I got a taste of competitive, yet fun play. I've learned so much from all the different coaches, tips, postings, and accessories offered now. I'm just a simple guy, with a simple style of play. I try not to get all caught up in the competition aspect of electric football, buzzball, or whatever else you call it. Having fun and bonding with football nuts (like Wolf) is what it's all about for me. But the thought of seeing a national tournament with consolidated rules, where any coach in the world could be welcomed is a really great idea. Having said that, here's what I'd like to see as far as equipment we could all use:

FIGURES: Miggle, ITZ, Buzzball, Reginald's, Wellington, Jennings, and anything else specifically made for playing. I'm a fan of custom figures too, so yes to them. (Just use the figure "cube" idea that Matt talked of earlier in this thread).
WEIGHT: 3.5 would be good, and I'm in favor of the heavier 4.0 linemen idea too. That should be TOTAL weight, with the base attached.
BASES: Any modern base made, with the exceptions being the huge Coleco and Gotham ones (they are just too big).
GAMEBOARDS: Anything 620-sized or just slightly bigger. I personally would love to play on custom Reggie-like boards. Metal fields are great, but so are wooden and fiber ones.
FOOTBALLS: I'd use whatever we decided on, but I like the heavier ones for passing.

i agree with jimbo, shut it down (saturday) start the rules sec

weirdwolf,

I agree with jimbo, you should press on to the rules section. I say give coaches a few more days on this equippment topic. As you can see, coaches seem to be pretty much in the same ballpark on what they want in the equipment they would like. That means once this is completed and set in stone, all would be happy and others who join later would accept this new format seeing how the makers got along and liked each others thoughts.

It would be nice to have a 5 line paragraph/testimonial from the agreeing members of this board on how they are satisified with this ef 50 state new set of rules. The reason for this is to use as a recruiting tool, new coaches can read the testimonials and feel comfortable joining a united group !

eeeeeeeeequipment ! just a thought

can we paint the tips of the football a neon green yellow or orange. 1 reason is to see the ball hit the players a little better, the 2cnd reason is to add just a bit of weight on the ball to get a better zip on it. The 3rd reason is to find the ball if it misses the player and lands somewhere off the field.

*** We can paint the tips or paint half the football, or paint 2 stripes on the ball. "just a thought" being thrown into the wind.

p.s I feel coaches had plenty of time to answer this thread on equipment, i even wrote a post asking coaches to please answer this thread if they have not already.. If a coach has not responded in a certain amount of time, maybe they are not interested. If they are not interested that's fine, we have plenty information already to make this a go. Im going to post a last call thread to respond on the equipment topic.

wolf, get all of your rules thoughts together and take us on down the road !

bway-dre again

thank you

standards for national

Here is what I'd like to see:

- 3.3 gram weight limit
- all figures allowed as long as it stays within standard dimensions of height and weight and fits within a standard "box"
- all bases allowed that are currently being sold by the major manufacturers (so that everyone has access to them)
- no boiling
- all decals must be purchased from an individual that lives in South Carolina
- board size (at least a 620 size) or bigger
- custom figures are ok and encouraged to add personality to the league!

Before we jump to rules, I think we need to discuss the weight limits and other equipmet options. What we have so far are alot of suggestions and there are still some difference in opinions that need to be worked out. The next step is coming to a consensus on the equipment. I think that overall we have a foundation to start from. We still need to discuss all the suggestions that are here so I will start a second thread which is for equipment discussion.

Patience please. As much as I want this to move forward quickly it is not something that can be finished in a matter of days just because of the nature of the web plus keep in mind that many people are very busy at this time of the year and it takes them longer to respond, myself included.

Rules will be a very invloved discussions and before we get to that we must know what equipment we can play with. Weighting will be a big discussion in itself.

What has been accomplished a year and a half later (see date of first post in this thread)? Anyone?

DC,

There a saying that goes something like this, If you never want the job done form a commitee, if you want the job done someday hire a consultant, if you want the job done right do it yourself. So what am I saying? You need someone with the energy and the vision to pull it together. The energy is needed to fight off the detractors the vision to see what it can be.

Self-passing only

I would completely eliminate the TTQB. If you guys tried self-passing under game conditions just once--you would never go back.

What are the rules of self passing? I know we did this as a kid but I am sure there is more to it now. Is their any video of this in action? That would be really helpful in getting the rest of us to understand.

I didn't forget you brother--I'll get those balls out to you this week!!! Self-passers UNITE!!!!!:chr:

Weirdwolf....

glad you asked. We have discussed doing an instructional self-passing video for Youtube. We decided to work on it in the next couple weeks. Will post when it's ready. All you guys would love the self-passing game in game action. Open your minds. I can supply you with replica NFL and NCAA passing balls if you would like to try em. They are slightly larger than scale-size--want em a little bigger so that when it hits your receiver--you'll know it!

Also, weirdwolf, I did a post recently about the rules of self-passing. Check it out when you can. Peace to you, and thanks for having an open mind.

The MFCA is open to ALL forms of miniature football. We originally defined Miniature Football as: Miniature football players on bases which are propelled over a miniature football field through the vibration created by an attached electric motor.
We left the deinition broad so that all forms can be included and by that definition, self passing is included and accepted by the MFCA as a viable form of passing. That's not saying that I will ditch my TDQ any time soon but I really want to know what all is involved.

Against self passing! I'll stop playing MF and SELL EVERYTHING ON EBAY the day this takes hold to the hobby.

Passing sticks are as far as I am willing to go on pass options and only under certain conditions.

As Wolf said, it is accepted and can be embraced by those few who do it. This is a think tank and I am just thinking out loud. Only my opinion, no offense to anyone.

I also heard self-passing causes blindness.

detroitchild 05-24-2008 09:23 PM

How about...

...forming a rules committee through MFCA (like the existing committees the organization already has) to create universal guidelines/rules that Wolf's thread started discussing a year and a half ago. STOP ME IF THIS HAS BEEN DONE OR DISCUSSED. The committee selects one or two topics to vote on...let's say an easy one like the types of bases allowed or QB's to be used. Have an online discussion on the topic(s) for about a week or two. Let the membership vote on the topic. The results will be law. Then move on to another topic.

SO LET IT BE WRITTEN...SO LET IT BE DONE!

Been Done Seven Times Seven!!!

There are already 7 different sets of "national" rules as defined by each Tournament. Not to mention, the 100s of leagues that use some or all of one or more sets. I would say 7 different styles to choose from is enough. No one should be THEE NATIONAL SET OF RULES. About the closest to "national" is Miggle's since they are the ONLY manufacturer of the game. Don't even include that other company's POC here!!! But even then their rules are influenced by different people each year, so again it has flavoring from the others sprinkled on top.
  1. Miniature College Football Championship (1st wkend in Jan.)
  2. Miggle World Championship (last wkend in Jan.)
  3. Buzzfest (Mar)
  4. Beltsville Bash (May)
  5. Bama Blast (1st wkend in June)
  6. Seawall BRAWL (3rd wkend in June)
  7. Texas Shootout (TBD, usually Labor Day)

Okaaaaaay! Interesting. I'm sure finding the rule sets for each tournament is simple enough. I usually find out about these tournaments from post on here but is there a compiled list of them (with rule sets/styles of play) some where?

As always thanks Jimbo.

DC

WEIRDWOLF 05-25-2008 12:12 AM

We list them in the Tweak issues and have asked the MFCA reps to keep these dates updated in the forum calendar but it is something new and they are not used to doing it yet on a regular basis.

The interesting thing about rules is they all have a common background or "genealogy". Almost all rule sets have a degree of similarity. I find it no problem to go to Buzzfest, or the Shootout, or the NHFL, or our own TAEFL (All places I have competed) and at the very least compete due to the similarities. I lose out at times because of not knowing some of the obscure differences but most coaches will give you a break initially as you learn.
I am actually glad that there is such a variety. It keeps things always fresh. The one thing that creates the biggest problem is equipment differences. 4.0, 3.2, 3.3 this base allowed, that base not, etc. I don't need a "national" set of rules but I would like us to establish some classes that these rule sets fit under and these could be defined largely by maximum weight allowed. Much like weight classes in boxing. Then however you have to throw in field sizes and actual scale and proportions of men. It has been argued many times but I think for the good of the hobby we should at least set some scale and weight divisions to give ourself some legitimacy in comparison to other tabletop games. This would also help newbies, as they pursue starting in the hobby, a direction to head towards rather then all over the place.

Another Nickel's Worth

I do agree every Tournament and League should declare their "category" for those that wish to travel to them, moreso the Tourneys, than the Leagues. But, when it comes to new people in the hobby, I think Step 1 should ALWAYS be to direct them to their local League, if there is one.

Being overwhelmed by reading about all of the differences i.e. weight, figures, boards, etc. really shouldn't be a newb's only 1st step. If that's all they do and don't even bother meeting the fellas, then IMHO I think they are more likely to find another hobby!!! That's just me.

As a new person in the hobby back in '90-something, it really didn't matter that L.A., Dallas and Detroit boiled their bases    if the league in Chicago/Gary didn't. All the different ways that I read about didn't matter as much as the way Edgar and Frank played: with the Strategy Divider. That's the way I had to play if I wanted to play live people. That or drive to Detroit or Columbus or KC. ;)

Equipment

TTQ AND Sticks, nothing wrong with variety, BUT method must be stated and not retracted within 10 Mississippi-Seconds of the stopped play.

I had questions regarding why we weigh the figure and base and not the figure/base together, the answer I got was to detract cheating, fellas shoeing up a larger figure with a heavier base, pushing that figure over the weight limit, thus creating a POSSIBLE advantage. Although I understand this, it bugs me. I know this is a forum of ideas, but I have a few questions as well. One being why, in some leagues and tournaments, are coaches not allowed to glue their figures to their base, this could eliminate the threat of my above mentioned scenario, and if figure/base with glue falls under the allowable weight, all is well, no?

In the attempt to keep things even for the newbie and Champion alike, while appeasing the veterans, is it too much to instate TWO sets of rules, similar to those of Buzzball. One being stock figures under specific limits of weight, equipment, etc. Two being the hybrid-rule set of varied weights (lineman, WR, LB, DB, etc etc) equipment, customs.

???

People like choices, even if it's only a dirt sandwich or bologna popsicle.

Glue Is A Sticky Subject!!!

In my League (MWEFL - Chicago, IL and Gary, IN) I strongly advocate the exclusive use of kids' glue stick to adhere figure to base. It adds minimal weight, it dries quickly, it can be reconstituted with a lil spittle if it comes apart or if ya need to flip the player backwards for trick plays i.e. WR Bubble Screens.

I've seen other glues in use and just don't think it looks good.
  • Elmer's glue takes forever to dry and oozes out of the cracks and creates sticky edges (see below). Plus, when it finally does dry, it cracks off and accumulates in the hard to clean areas of your board!!! If you do have an "injury" then you gotta scrape off the old and apply new glue and wait forever again!!!
  • Hot glue adds considerable weight and also becomes tacky, so the edges will tend to stick to each other and will clearly be used to help an OL "stick" together in their flying wedge. Thru thick and thin, that OL really sticks together!!!
  • Spray tack, for obvious reasons, shouldn't be used. Can you say, "Stick 'em?" I knew that you could. ;)

So, IMHO, kids' glue stick (I use the purple/invisible one) is the least offensive (works on your defensive players too! ;)) glue out there. An added bonus is that it CAN be easily removed by rubbing the bottom of the figure on a wet cloth! thmbsp$
