No reason to be sorry, it's good healthy discussion and the solitaire folks need to see more of that on these boards.

I don't really assign routes to the receivers. If they get open, I try and hit them. If they don't, then the DBs are doing a good job. One or the other wins the matchup and that decides the game.

I do lineup receivers based on where they are strong, such that if a receiver sort of loops to the right, he'll be lined up on the left, that sort of thing. I also will alternate a bit on who is in the slot and who is on the line.

One route I do run is a bubble screen. I'll bunch trips on one side, but set one receiver to run sideways. The other two in the bunch then block, and the intended receiver has to try and outrun the guy who was on him. It doesn't usually work for much, but it's fun to set up.

I have 103 teams and bases on all teams. Except 1. I keep one bass I know run mostly straight to give to the primary runner and I rotate each. It fun passing trying to wacth ansd see how they break. Sometimes I go left and they go right., Incomplete other times i get right.

Ed do you dice for passes now or TTQB?

Drk 02-09-2011 07:16 AM

We are very similar........

.....in our thinking on this topic as well. My problem is secifically with TE's though.

SE and RB going out on routes aren't so much a problem as you pointed out. On my snap stop the cover man or zone defender in that area, has to decide how to play the reciever he has; turn and run, hold him up (I let them do this without penalty) or let the reciever go to someone else.

TE's present a problem for me becuase they often have a DE line up over them in my nine man schemes. Thus, getting off the line is difficult if not impossible unless they are angled before the snap. DE's do not drop into coverage very often if ever. So, if I angle the the TE to get him out I eitehr have to slide the protection to his side or rely on a back to pick up an unblocked DE, neither of which has proved very successful resulting usually in a quick release by the qb; I don't get many sacks in my multi stop system. I have thought about allowing the TE to be pivited when engaged after the snap. This would slow up the DE for the back or slide and allow the TE to get into a route.

HMMMM, well, now that I've described this to you it actually sounds very realistic. What I need is more sacks. Solved my own problem on one hand and found another I guess. ppls$

To this point, all passes have been with the TTQB, with the exception of passes where the TTQB could lean over and touch the receiver with the ball (usually 2 base lengths). Those are automatic completions unless The Box says otherwise.

RooMorgans 02-09-2011 11:29 PM

So I've played a half using the passing charts that dogwood30 and I developed and the FG chart that Hoop developed.

In the first half of Syracuse-Clemson, there were 38 snaps. But this was playing only 40-minute quarters as opposed to 60 as before, where there would normally be 45 snaps or so in the opening half. So the timing is fine by me. Passing plays are definitely a lot shorter. Haven't had the rare play chart come up yet, in fact there were no penalties or turnovers at all in the opening half.

I did make one change with regard to the passing chart. My hypotehsis that most of the passes would be in the 0-20 yard range wasn't correct. The majority of pass plays were in that middle range. So I'm using the team's standard completion roll for the mid-range passes, adding 20 for the short passes, and subtracting 20 for the long passes, as well as adding 2 to the interception number for those passes. It's made for some interesting decisions when there have been multiple receivers open on a play and I have to decide if I want to take the short or medium route with a higher completion percentage, or go for the downs knowing there is a 20% worse chance of completing the pass, with a greater risk of it being intercepted.

Syracuse leads Clemson, 10-7, at the break, and will be getting the ball to start the second half.

Excellent....

.....I still have a game sitting with just one quarter played. I won't change anything to finish it and have one game left in my week five schedule. I probably should finish the week before I implament such a big change as the new chart; but, I'm just to excited bout it to wait. Like a spoiled kid at Christmas. I can't wait!

... SYRACUSE SYR-VIVES A LAST-MINUTE GAFFE; HOLDS OFF CLEMSON

For much of their Week 3 ECFA game against the Clemson Tigers, the Syracuse Orangemen were their typical, quietly dominating selves. Cooly pounding the ball down the Tigers' throats, then crossing them up at just the right time to take a 17-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

But despite their 0-2 record coming in, Syracuse soon found out these weren't the same old sorry ********** Clemson Tigers. Clemson rallied to within 17-14, and then with all hope seemingly lost and no time outs left, forced a fumble giving them 2 plays and 87 yards to go for the winning score with 25 seconds left. Quarterback Kyle Parker found an open man on the first play 20 yards down field, but missed him. That left 4 seconds left and time for one last play. But Parker was pressured by Syracuse DL Chandler Jones, and had to scramble just to get out of the end zone, taking an 11-yard sack on the final play as the Orangemen stayed perfect with a 17-14 win.

Syracuse won this one mostly with its running game, as the left side of the Orangemen offensive line plowed through the right side of the Clemson defense. Syracuse (3-0, 2-0 Eastern Conference) ran for 154 yards on 25 carries, with Antwan Bailey (16-96) leading the charge. But the Orangemen got their touchdowns through the air. First, Ryan Nassib hit Bailey with a shovel pass for a 1-yard score, and later he completed a 19-yard pass to Van Chew, who was wide open in the corner of the end zone, for a second score. Nassib was a modest 10-for-15 for 102 yards, but had 2 TDs and 0 INTs and with the rushing attack being what it was, that was about as good as he needed to be.

Conversely, Clemson had no ground game, losing 25 yards on 7 attempts. Two of those were sacks of Parker, and only one run - a 12-yard Parker scramble, gained positive yards the entire game. Parker struggled through the air, going 9-for-21 for 149 yards, his yardage total perked up by a 62-yard catch and run TD from Marquan Jones that tied the game at 7 in the second quarter. Syracuse added a field goal before the end of the half to take a 10-7 lead. The teams traded punts in the third quarter before Chew's touchdown catch on the quarter's final play made it 17-7.

After Parker's 12-yard run to open the final quarter, Clemson went 52 yards on the next 9 plays, all passes, before tailback Andre Ellington caught a 14-yard touchdown pass. He made the most of the new Rare Play Chart, as when he caught the ball, only one Syracuse player was allowed to pivot. That tackler missed, and Ellington was free. He did the rest to make it 17-14.

Syracuse then drove 58 yards to the Clemson 13 before Bailey fumbled, but the Tigers were thwarted in the final seconds.

Clemson is 0-3, 0-1 East, and will play conference foe Kentucky next week. Syracuse has a monster non-conference game against Illinois in Week 4.

Another thriller!

And the rare play chart had an impact already; to cool!

Can't wait for the big Syracuse/Illinois game; gotta pull for the Big 10 team but the Orange have a great history and are a fine top seed.

Keep it coming Ed.

RooMorgans 02-11-2011 08:40 PM

It's interesting, with Syracuse now the clear favorite in the East, and having drawn the non-conference games at random - the Orangemen's two non-conference games are against the two teams they'd most likely face in the Commonwealth Bowl for the national championship: Illinois and Oklahoma. They've already dispatched OU, 23-9, and will be a tough task for Illinois to figure out next week.

It's funny how those intangible plays pop up in crucial spots in the game. It adds a new element of excitement to the game. Sometimes the underdog gets the big break and gets an upset win. Other times the favorite might get the big break to avoid the big upset. You never know.

I'm not sure Virginia can give them too much trouble. The Cavaliers don't have much at WR and their cornerbacks are suspect.

Purdue doesn't have the greatest base talent but definitely seems to play well as a group, so they are going to be in the battle for the top spot for sure.

Illinois-Nebraska the main game for today in a Western Conference battle, then the aforementioned Boilermakers and Cavaliers meet to finish off Week 3. Rematch of the 1984 Peach Bowl, won by Virginia, which was its first-ever bowl game.

Team base strength....

How do you guys manage your teams' bases? How often do you tweak bases? Do you change out a teams' bases; how often?

Do you have some sort of system for this?

RooMorgans 02-12-2011 08:21 AM

I just tweak up each team using the same style, and most teams get the same profile in terms of what type of base (TTC, rookie) is at each position.

I check the rookies before each game to make sure they run at least reasonably straight. I'll switch out one if it's bad. If one goes really bad during the game, I'll charge the team a time out and change the base.

For TTCs, I just make sure they can run. How strong they are is out of my control. The players decide that.

I will be so BOLD as to predict NEBRASKA winning by ten, and PURDUE winning by fourteen points. Nebraska AND Purdue BOTH sound like strong balanced teams that will make a strong run to the end. ... HUSKERS HALT HOPES FOR ILLINI AT THE BUZZER

Nebraska has proven two things this season. One, they are good at getting early leads. Two, they are good at giving up said leads. They did it against Purdue in the opener, and lost on a last-second field goal, 25-23.

Today, they turned the tables at the end on Illinois, jumping ahead to a 17-0 lead, seeing that advantage evaporate, then kicking a field goal on the final play to win the game, 20-17. The win came in Nebraska's conference opener to leave the Cornhuskers 2-1 overall, 1-0 Western Conference; while Illinois fell to 2-1, 1-1.

Nebraska took a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter after Gomez blocked an Illinois punt in Illini territory. It was the first blocked punt in ECFA history. Nebraska took over at the Illinois 26 and scored 5 plays later when Green hit Cooper for a 13-yard score.

In the second quarter, the Cornhuskers were driving following an Illinois punt that actually went forward. Nebraska drove 50 yards in 12 plays, but could only get a 30-yard field goal out of the deal when passes on 2nd and 3rd down from the Illinois 13 fell incomplete. The lead swelled to 17-0 after Moore intercepted Illinois quarterback Scheelhaase and returned it to the 49. Green ran for 9 then 41 yards, going out of bounds at the 1. Robinson then came out of the backfield to catch a touchdown pass.

Following yet another Illinois punt, the Huskers needed only to escape the final minute of the half to get orange slices and Gatorade with a 17-0 lead. But Green was picked off by Ellington, who returned it 35 yards to the Nebraska 6. Le Shoure caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Scheelhaase - and despite having only 8 yards of total offense in the first 90 minutes, Illinois went to the locker room down just 17-7.

Nebraska punted on the opening drive of the third quarter, failing to gain a yard. Illinois converted that into 3 points, moving to the Nebraska 27 before kicking a 44-yard field goal. Nebraska punted again, and Illinois scored again, this time driving 61 yards in 8 plays, culminating in Jenkins' 16-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter.

After the Cornhuskers punted yet again, it appeared Illinois would get the lead. Starting from the 6, the Illini running game finally kicked into gear, with Becker rushing for 69 yards on 7 carries. But on 3rd-and-5 from the Nebraska 24, he was turned back for a 2-yard loss by DE Meredith. The subsequent 43-yard field goal attempt was no good, and another ECFA tie loomed.

The tie looked like a sure bet when Green was sacked by Brant, creating a 3rd-and-22 at the 21 with 4 minutes to play. Illinois called a time out, hoping to get the ball back and mount one final drive. But Nebraska crossed them up, throwing to TE Reed for a 38-yard gain and new life. On 3rd-and-10 from the Illinois 41, Cooper caught a 14-yard pass, but one final try for Reed in the corner of the end zone with 4 seconds left was incomplete. Then, Nebraska sent out the kicker and he was good from 42, as Nebraska wins, 20-17.

Nice. So Walt is on record for a Syracuse-Texas matchup in Commonwealth Bowl II.

Who do the rest of you got?

For now, I'm still thinking that CB2 will be a rematch between Syracuse and Oklahoma. The Orangemen just seem to do what it takes to win, and Oklahoma at times has had a running game led by DeMarco Murray that no one can (except Syracuse) can deal with.

Syracuse won the first meeting between the teams in Week 1, 23-9.

Have you gotten any more plays that went to the intangible chart?

I'm thinking of making up another intangible chart for the kicking game.

RooMorgans 02-17-2011 12:10 AM

I'm just working off of the original one that you came up with. I think it's the kind of thing that lends itself to the passing game more than anything else. And there are blocks and misses accounted for in the kicking game with Hoop's chart - and I also shake the box on all plays, so there could still be a penalty or a fumble.

Haven't had time to play this week, hoping to get a bit of Purdue-Virginia in tomorrow; but won't have time play this weekend. With Monday being a holiday, though, I will get a good many plays in then.

... CAVALIERS CRUSH PURDUE, SILENCE PUNDITS

The Virginia Cavaliers heard talk all week in Charlottesville about how those closely following the ECFA felt the Purdue Boilermakers were a key contender in the Eastern Conference along with Syracuse. Virginia didn't seem to enter into that conversation, however. Head coach Mike London bristled a bit during last week's press conference, wondering how Purdue could be annointed Eastern champs before playing his young club.

Now, the Cavaliers certainly are in the conversation, as London's troops tied Syracuse for the Eastern lead with a 27-9 demolition of the Boilermakers. Virginia ran for 186 yards on 26 attempts, including 105 yards on just 8 carries from Perry Jones. Running mate Terence Fells-Danzer chugged for 69 more yards on 11 carries, as the Virginia ground game dominated Purdue's defense and kept talented Boilermakers receivers Cortez Smith and Keith Smith off the field for much of the game.

When they were on the field, Purdue quarterback Robert Marve couldn't have hit them if they were the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Men. Marve was just 9-for-20 on the game for 122 yards, but spent most of the second quarter missing receivers left, right, and over. Keith Smith caught just 2 for 28 yards, the second of which was for 23 yards on the last play of the game. Cortez Smith brought in just one reception for 24 yards. Tight end Kyle Adams (5 catches, 65 yards) tried to pick up the slack, but it wasn't enough.

Purdue (2-1, 1-1 Eastern Conference) did manage 53 yards on the ground, but that all came on a late drive where RB Al-Terek McBurse gained 47 yards to enter Virginia territory, then scored on a 41-yard run. Marve was sacked 3 times and lost -33 yards on 8 official carries.

The Boilermakers actually led early, converting a 37-yard Chris Quinn punt return into a 50-yard field goal. But on the next play from Scrimmage, Jones cut left, crossed field to the right, then cut left again for a 63-yard touchdown. His weaving trip through the Purdue defense made it 7-3, Virginia.

Three punts followed and Virginia got it at its 31 in the second quarter. Gaining 62 yards - all on the ground - disaster nearly struck when Fells-Danzer fumbled on a 4-yard loss back to the Purdue 11. But Virginia fell on it, and on the next play, Fells-Danzer atoned by catching an 11-yard TD pass from Verica to make it 14-3. Marve missed on 5 of 6 passes on the next drive, and UVA (2-1, 2-0 East) got the ball back at its 30 for one final play. Verica hit Kris Burd over the middle, and Purdue couldn't catch him! Burd scored on the 70-yard catch and run on the half's final play to make it 21-3.

Purdue got it to start the second half and drove to the Virginia 22. In field goal range to stay in it, that was ruined when Virginia LB Jared Detrick sacked Marve for a 15-yard loss. The 54-yard field goal attempt was no good, and Purdue got nothing. The Cavaliers added a 26-yard field goal on their next drive to make it 24-3. After Purdue failed on a 4th-and-6 from its 32 in a last gasp to stay in the game, Virginia added a 41-yard field goal to push the lead to 27-3.

Then, McBurse took over, breaking his long runs. The 2-point conversion failed, however, and Virginia recovered the onside kick.

Virginia will battle Florida in Week 4, while Purdue takes on Florida State, as both teams continue with conference play.

This will be updated after each game. The AP Poll will come out at the conclusion of each week.

Interesting that Purdue is still ranked ahead of Virginia despite the head-to-head loss. Purdue has beaten Nebraska and Kentucky, ranked 5th and 10th, respectively. Virginia has beaten Purdue and Florida State, ranked 3rd and 11th, respectively. Purdue's loss is to #4 Virginia; Virginia's loss is to #6 Illinois. Too close to call there.
