Good guess?But
It was Larry johnson---Chiefs.As you know they re-use poses alot.As I see them on ebay or the stores I try to picture the person I want to do or HS kid.I was sitting on that L J fig for 2 years.I wait until the kids are SR;s before I do a figure on them.--STT

AWESOME!!!
Thanks for posting STT, these are BAD-**********. The detail is incredible. Do you use decals as well as free-hand painting? How long have you been doing these? thmbsp$ |
thanks chachi!
A few years ago while playing MF at a guys house he had these figures that I really liked. He had them set up in the room where we played MF.alot like Bnut has in his recent post.I went out and bought all the stock steelers and saw some other cool poses.I did not want to put T. Owens up or other teams players so I began doing Steelers in 6 in and 12 in action figures from Mcfarlane.I then began to learn from some of the better guys out there and have been doing them for about 4 years now.My Steeler collection got so big,it is now displayed at a huge steeler pizza place in town for others to look at.As an offshoot I also do HS players at my school as gifts for them.I do baseball, basketball and football as you can see in the post.Nothing like the look a kid has when he gets his very own action figure of himself.I am in the process of starting a website specializing in HS customs for kids and steeler figs.I want to keep it fun and not make it work.It is relaxing to me.I use a mix of freehand and decals.I am also trying to up my game by shading the flex to add depth and detail.I am back full circle now by doing MF customs since they got me going in the first place. You can see why I like the reggie figs because they remind me of Mcfarlanes.Other figs are cool also.I am a rookie at doing MF figs compared to you guys.I think what you all do with these lil guys is great.I would love to base up one of my 6 in or 12 in figures. It was sad to see mcfarlane come out with those team sets.they should of left that to the MF people. They were poorly done and too cookie cutter for me.There is enough room for everyone--"do what you do" is what I say.I am glad you like them--STT

Very nice work! Do you paint EF teams the same way? If so, put some of them up too.
I hear you with the McFarland figures. I was very dissappointed with how they look. Too large for EF, and the poses were boring as heck. Bill and I thought about doing figures, but in the end decided we could live with what he had. Mark |
Yes,I plan to.
Thanks,Actually MF figs got me into doing mac customs.now I am back full circle doing both.I am involved with my High School kids league and helping them paint teams also. The work on this site is awesome that guys put out.Yea the mac team sets are too cookie cutter. They all look alike which is not realistic. There is very little detail in them like the other mac 6in and 12 in figs. They have also started cutting corners in their newer stuff somewhat. They are nice to pattern MF figs after when doing custom poses.I hope to post some MF figs in the near future.I have been trying to do more with flesh tones as of late.I like how Chris does the painting tutorials in the tweak mags--great tips-STT

appreciate it!
Maybe one of my 6 in. Lamberts can tackle that Campbell figure of yours. Now the size matchup is more even than when both were in the league--ha ha.You do great work also.Love how you build them up and add to what is there. Thanks for giving me some tips too on using Apoxie sculpt.I do remember when JL took EC and knocked him backwards. Not bad for a 210 lb LB.I heard you are the Chippendales guy. What is up with that?lol STT

I painted an EF figure for one of my high school kids my first year. He went to Oklahoma and now plays DT for the Chicago Bears (when he isn't injured). Our school was green and black and the figure looked really nice. I shaded it with oils and printed decals, just like yours. I didn't get too many of the football kids at my next school, since word got out that the starting QB failed my class right before the state playoffs at Lake Dallas. Oh well, still went to a few games.

I bet he learned a lesson.
I got a couple like that too.I use straight acryllics paints on all my stuff.I then use a clear coat by krylon to protect the decals.when done I hit it w/dull coat 2x's lightly.I then gloss the helmet to shine it up.One thing about the dull coat,if you use too much,it can give the opposite look of a shine. You also have to be careful not to get that cloudy look to your figs when spraying it.I think temperature has alot to do with that also. For MF figs,I use all brush on coats, sealers.Francis turned me onto those. You can spray them, but I feel you do not get as much control of it.I stayed with using Acryllics on my MF figs because I have a ton of paints from doing Mcfarlanes and I find them to work well for me.I thin them with water and clean with water.I am surprised more coaches on here do not do custom Mcfarlanes also.Great crossover and they could be called mineratures also.If anyone wants learn,I can help--STT

nice work on the mcfarlanes.ppls$ |
Skin tones tips.
Chris,I really use your tips on skin tones.I go with a med color for skin, then go a bit darker for cuts and shaded area. Then usually go lighter for raised areas such as a bicep or tricep area.I use to just do skin all one color which looks ok,but the shading steps it up.I used those techniques on the harrison figure of the Steelers.thanks for the tips--STT

Figures
Tim,
WOW....That is some great work that you do. I think you'll do well with the little guys. Stay in touch and feel free to call any time. Play Football. Mark |
thanks!
We'll do.different set of challenges w/ the lil guys.I got one of my club kids doing a nice bears team. You'd like the looks of them.He is doing shoe laces and all.He is trying to get them like your steelers team I have.BTW I see alot of guys are going to bananna to match the paints with the decals from Bnut.I got some bases coming in to put on them in case I go out somewhere and play. Not a great tweaker at this point.I got some stuff in to give me something to test against. Thanks, glad you like the customs I posted.I may put some more up tommorrow--STT
