1976 Bucs All Stars : D. Selmon and D. Logan
4 Attachment(s)
Hi,
Here a special project I'm making for a friend of mine ;) 2 "all star-like" customized figures, based on ff.net figs : Dewey Selmon #58 and David Logan #76. All with muscles, faces and old school jerseys. I started with Dewey Selmon, who was a linebacker. So I tried to make a typical "snap observing" LB pose, based on a offensive center fig. Here's the first pics of the first rough modifications I modified the stance (legs spacing), feet position, arms, hands and head position too, to give the figure a "snap moment" position. As usual, I try to make playable figs too, with good balance. |
Being balanced is key
Yeah it's nice having a cool looking fig, but if you can't get a base to run on it, it's almost useless. So you need a fig to practical & balanced.
As for your selection of players. Both those guys were good, but Dewey's brother Lee Roy Selmon #63 is an NFL Hall of Famer who was as good as there was in his era. He played DE. Dewey was a LB. Logan was a DT I'm not sure if it's Leroy, or Lee Roy and I think he's the only Buc to be inducted into the HOF Nat'l |
I didn't select the players, so... :rtfl:

the other fig

I finished the other fig rough pose. I made him in defensive lineman rushing position, to bring a contrast with the LB.
I used 2 figs for it : a very low wide receiver body and the chest of a lineman. I choosed a low leg assembly to bring the fig some good stance. Here's the pics ! |
Can't wait to see them painted up !!!! ppls$
|
actually...
I will not paint them : I'll "just" customize, re-sculpt (faces, chinstraps, muscles, jersey, belly, etc...) and undercoat them ;)
|
wow i like them both. nice job.
|
thanks !
I'll finish them this week end I hope. Dimitri |
preparation

Hi,
This week end I 've been too busy to finish the figs, but today I worked on it. An important thing when you customize figs,, is the preparation stage. Before I'll start muscles and face sculpting, I fixed the figure shape on the zones I cutted or glued, and defects with some modelling paste. I'll continue tomorrow ;) |
Muscle men

:D
Today I add the muscles on the figs. I didn't detail the top of them, since the top of the arms will be covered by the jersey (old school 76's). But I wanted to make hulk/pro wrestling muscles, since it works so well with the ff.net figures. Tomorow I'll make the old school jersey and perhaps the faces. Finally, I will also paint the skin of it. I believe if one day I propose customizing service, I'll offer ready to paint figs (with just a coat of primer) and skin prepainted figs too (since a well executed skin tone is quite technic to achieve). Here's the pics : |

Hi,
Here's the sculpting almost daily report :D Today, I made the jersey sculpting. Following photos I've seen of that period (70's), the jerseys were quite large. So I adapted the figures to that observation, sculpting the jerseys. Here's the pics. Now I have to make the faces and chinstraps. Finally, I'll clean and sand the fig and undercoat it, then I'll paint the skin tone and face ;) |
I love your work! I have been trying my hand at using green stuff as well after seeing your 49s. i think someone else asked but i cant seem to find it, what tools do you use to shape the arms and faces?
|
1 Attachment(s)
I've got plenty of tools, but basically you can start with only that 2 tools. The first rubber brush can be found in arts supply shops, and the other one can be found in creative activities shops or wargaming shops ;)
|
Jersey was different in those days
It seems like the padding was larger back then also. Players wore more of them than in todays game.
With your changes, it should come out just great. Still thinks the guy should have you do a #63 Leroy Selmon, but maybe he already has him on the roster!!! Keep us posted Nat'l |

I based my work on pics like this one : |

Hi,
Today I made the (really) sculpted faces and I sanded and fixed the helmets. Now I remember why I use the Xacto sculpting technic on most of my own figures :rtfl: the "real sculpting technic" like I used on that 2 buc figs brings better results, but it's also more difficult and take quite long time too. I honestly don't know if I 'll propose that sculpting service for my possible future customization bartering-based services... I choosed to represent the 2 players with beard, since I found a lot of pics of them like that. And I like the look it gives, especially for a 70's team ! Tommorow, I'll finish the sculpting, fixing defects and adding chinstraps. Dimitri |

last fix

I forgot to fix the feet of that fig. Since I heavily modify his stance, the feet were not placed good anymore (quite like a duck...) so I resculpted them, now the athlete is ready for contact :D
since the green stuff is a very sticky paste, it will help the fig to stay glued on the plateform. |
Ready to paint

Hi,
The figures have been primer coated today. I like that stage, when you can see the smooth overall aspect of the complete figure. thmbsp$ Tommorow, I'll paint the skin tones and arms details, then the figs will take the plane to USA :D |
the figures look good!
hope your thumb gets better! |
:D
I cutted it drilling a new counterweight for my board. I made a beginner mistake, to work quicker I didn't fixed the brass plate on my working table, so when I drilled it, it started to spin really fast and took a bit of my thumb :rtfl: Don't try this at home :D More seriously, at least wear protection glasses...I never work without them, and it gives a awsome pro worker look too :rtfl: I cutted the brass counterweight with my dremel cutting disk...and the disk exploded  Hopefully the bits went everywhere but not on my face...but imagine if they went into my eyes...you can fix a tooth or a thumb...you can't fix eyes ;) |

Today I made the first skin tone coat; Tomorrow I'll make the effects (shade and lights). |
Painting completed

Hi,
I finished the painting of the figs (I only had the arms, chinstrap and face to do). Here's some night pics of it. Like the real athletes, I give them some old school 70's beard :D I'm happy with their face, quite realistic for the pics I found. I also varnished them, but sometimes the mat varnish I use goes quite satin  Since my friend will certainly varnish the whole figure, it's not a problem. Next project : A Steelers team, and some Niners option players. I believe I'll offer customizing services soon too ;) Tomorrow, I'll make daylight pics and speak about my personal customizing service concept. ;) Dimitri |

Finally, I'll completly paint the figures, so stay tuned for the next stages :D |
ooooooh
Cant wait to get into my lab and try this out. Love the shades, especially on the hand to distinguish the fingers.
|
thank you !
For the fingers thing, It's what I was speaking about in my tutorial : creating details where the figure does not have any or few.
The only issue IMHO is that all details will be not too much visible without good light. Since the athletes skin is quite dark, the shading and highlightning effects have to be not too strong to still realistic, but logicaly you need good light to enjoy them. It's something you have to be aware of if you try to paint realistic dark tone ethnic origins skins. ;) |
WoooooooooW
You amaze me everytime I look at your post.

thank you too, Dearell thmbsp$

I screwed up

Hi,
To be a decent modeler or painter, you have to be perfectionist :D As I said before, I didn't like two things on that figures : the dark tone making the figures painting effects not enough "readable" in normal conditions (basement, night, rainy day). The other thing, the varnish wich reacted wierd and appeared a little gloss/satin. Each day, I was observing the figures, and each new day that little issues (wich I'm probably the only one to see :D ) became really annoying...So I made my choice : the DIP :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: The figures are now in a alcohol bath, to remove all the paint and varnish, and I'll do all the painting job again. My friend deserves it IMHO thmbsp$ |
Is that a 2006 Chardonnay Delmas or just rubbing alcohol that you are soaking them in?
:D |
