Picking apart your own rules
Everyone always goes to bat for their ruleseset. We play the best, it's real football....this and that.
Let's flip it. what is your league's worst or craziest rule? And do you feel that way? Nobody has the perfect rules set, so I want to see like 50 replies on this one. Even the solitaire guys can jump in the F.O.T.H. |
making my own soup
Personaly, I play the MFCA ruleset, and I added a bit of buzzball rules too (passing simulation).
I also added my own rules, for "realistic" action : front of base tackling offense pivots forbidden for pass simulation (the receiver can't pivot) timing restrictions (you have to choose the receiver instantly, for example) the goal is to make the game fast and easy to play (remember that I'm playing with beginners here), but keeping some real football aspects in the game. Definitly not a hardcore football simulation, but looks football enough for us :D |
shootout style
coaches,
In the shootout style, being forced to punt if you dont cross a certain yardline. Just like the nfl i think the coach should decide whether or not he wants to punt. What iFhe has a trick/special play just for that occassion. let the defense stop him and not the rule. There is already a rule in place where you must cross your opponents 40 yardline to attempt a field goal. so coaches know they cant get slick and try a field goal fromtheir own 20 yard line. LET THE COACH DECIDE IFHE WANTS TO PUNT OR NOT. MANTARAYDRE |
We too have forced punts............ I go back and forth on what to do on it all the time. This is known as the "Danny rule. " We also have the "Rick rule " lffng$ lffng$ lffng$
Should we have forced punts or not ????????????? |
Yep!
Can't stand that aspect. If a guy wants to go for it, gets, stoppped, then ultimately blown out then let them. thmbsp$
We already discussed the pass simulation and fumbles under shootout rules. With fumbles, you should have to do something on the field (physicallly tackle=cause) for the box to come into play on a fumble (Shake/fumble=effect) I like stacking personally but it's not allowed. To me it's like crowding the line against a terrible passer, like myself! :rtfl: I think that a format for playing shootout needs to be invented whereby so much of our resources (4 coaches) is channeled into one game. Yes, I know that some leagues do it but the "how to" is not there for all to see. Just my thoughts. |
I too really hate not being able to "go for it" in certain 4th down situations, that is one rule I'd like to take to the curb!
I am going to see who wants to ditch this rule in Los Angeles next year. |
forced punts...
For the Mid-O
I know I haven't played any league games yet, and as a rookie I don't want to act like I own the place... so take this with a grain of salt.:D mtmstnks I think you should have the ability to gamble and go for it on fourth down... However, after talking with Frank about some of the rules, the "fake punt" scenario is really BS... here's why: strrngthpt Real football situation -- the players can react after the play starts. MF -- the players cannot. We have to set them into motion based on the play call. Example: We compensate for this on pass plays by announcing our intention to pass the ball, the defense then makes substitutions (stationary safeties), and then the play begins. With a fake punt, the formation and alignments don't allow for this flexibility; the players cannot be expected to both cover a punt downfield and release the gunners AND watch for the run or pass!! I believe that the offense should have to either punt or just go for it. OR, the offense should only have the ability to "fake punt" a certain number of times per game (maybe just once). The offense should have to announce their intention the same as pass plays...:mtcnts: |
sticks in all leagues.
coaches,
If the premise on passing is to do it within a certain time limit, then what difference does it make which method i use to pass, ( tdq or sticks) AS LONG AS IT IS DONE WITH THAT LEAGUES TIME LIMIT. It is only a problem if coaches constantly goes over the limit. seconds to use either methiod. IF YOUR THE OPPOSING COACH, WHY DO YOU CARE WHICH ONE OF THE 2 I USE WHEN YOUR THE ONE TIMING ME. WHY DO YOU CARE ? . THIS IS NOT DIRECTED AT ANY ONE COACH WHO PLAY THE SHOOTOUT SYSTEM OR OTHERS. JUST GENERALLY SPEAKING. I hear the use of sticks slows the game and takes awy from the coaches who developed the skill to use the ttqb. Im sorry but this is not the PUNT, PASS AND KICK COMPETITON. EACH COACH IS TRYING TO WIN A FOOTBALL GAME. AM I RIGHT . LET HIM WIN USING THE COMFORTABLE METHOD FOR HIM. as long as he does either within the time limit, WHY DO YOU CARE ?JUST PLAY DEFENSE. i JUST HEARD THIS ON THE nfl NETWORK LAST NIGHT. When Joe montana's arm strength(a skill also) was in question, he replied. " I dont throw darts at balloons, i throw balloons at darts" jerry rice is one of the darts !!!!!!!! You want to throw hard, go ahead if that is best for you, i must do mwhat is best for me. mantaraydre |

the better way to speed up the passing stick use is to not allow some things like turn and burns or offense receiver pivots (on my own experiment, it's the point of rule I don't like in passing sticks) , etc... another thing I like with passing sticks is that you never have to touch any offense figure. Just turn on the board, let develop the game, turn it off, designate your receiver (instantly, 2secs max, in our ruleset), put the ball marker on the field, lets the defense make pivots to intercept/tackle and turn the board on again. That's it. thmbsp$ i like to keep the game of miniature football on a coaching point of view. |
Quote:
Here is how we do it. When the defense lines up , they should first line up to cover the gunners. Only after the offense states punt , do you release the gunners. You should always cover the gunners first! |
i agree 100% with mantaray on this ,that a coach should be able to do what he is most comfortable with, wether it be passing using sticks or the ttqb, same as on punting situations,if a coach is reckless enough to go for it on fourth down and fail time after time and ends up getting blown out, thats part of the learning process of the game.

4th down rule..
I like it for leagues, I don't think it should be there for tournaments, we didn't have a 4th down punt rule at the BuzzBall tournaments, but we do for the Harrisburg BuzzBall league.
This gets into the philosophy/argument of playing "realistic" football. I find it amusing how many "cherry pick" rules for their own liking, while under the guise of being realistic, but many of those rules they play be are indeed NOT realistic. |
BANNING OF THE PILL BALL!!!!!!!!!
I had a nice pass/run game with the pill in Season 1 all the WAY to SB I.thmbsp$ .Year II the Pill is out..:rnt; ..I foundout that it had nothing to do with me but whoever got it banned and whoever agreed:fghttt: :fghttt: :fghttt: :fghttt: :fghttt: :fghttt: :fghttt: ps I have a focus disorder inwhich the moment of my pass my sight shifts and so the biggerftbll$ helped and increased my desire to throw. Now I havent hit a pass past 5 yards in ages:rllngs: lffng$ :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :dohdh:
Heck it was big so if i thrown an errant pass "int" and if too hard i knocked down my man or another penalty so..it was 50/0 anyway. I love the league and a good brother and friend in the league told me to believe in the glory and magic of the little ball:eek: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: "PILL Ball Returns 2011 Campaign":dohdh: :rnt; ppcrn ppcrn ppcrn :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: Lol...Mo dont do it:rnt; :rnt; :rnt; :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: :rtfl: |
Forced punts in MF have nothing to do with realism. In real live football going for it on the 4th down has far more realistic and damaging consequences.
In MF I have nothing to lose if my 4th and 9 bid fails, it's a game and I do not have tens of millions of dollars at risk. If I am facing a loss or want to try to protect a lead I have every right to call the play I chose when I want to. |
hmmm...
Corey this is a nice post...
I'll defend the punt rule then I'll tell you a few rules that I don't like about the shootout rules... Contrary to what a lot are feeling I believe the punt rule definetely gives the game a realistic feel. Who goes for it on 4th and 10 from their own 20 in the 1st quarter with 80 yards to go from pay dirt? This keeps the scores relatively closer than they would should you toss this rule. A hidden gem in this rule is that it is a preventative measure that aids against coaches quitting because scores are out of hand. More often than not when the scores are out of control, coaches quit because they feel that there is no reason to continue. This rule aids against that. A few rules that I hate... I don't like the idea that our QB blocks. I love the concept that I've seen a few leagues adopt which is turning the QB away to handoff on run plays. I believe that there should be a higher injury scale for those that like to run the QB and he gets tackled in the field of play. I also don't like the new kickoff rule. To much detail to explain I also wish that we had the option of doing motions and pivots or the audible. This way we get to do either or and both are included. I love seeing a TE shift to the other side of the line of scrimmage to block a blitzer! This is a true audible and read by the QB when he makes this adjustment at the line of scrimmage! Thanks Corey for this post! I love it! |
YAC Yardage!! Who can catch?
I've been watching alot of the games that are being broadcast, and I dont understand why turn and burn isn't allowed. I see nice passes being completed and defenses being allowed to pivot after the catch. Why cant the receiver pivot to avoid tackle or gain yardage? In football recievers catch and run up field. Its the defenses job to have players in position to cover, and to make the tackles limiting YAC yardage. I notice alot of defenses stack the line of scrimmage, play 1 second defense (bumping recievers altering routes) and not getting burned for it. Offensive receivers are wide open behind the D, pass is completed but reciever was facing sideways when he caught it. Receiver than proceeds to run 15 yards sideways out of bounds!!
I also am trying to understand the rule of demanding that a coach calls out the reciever he is throwing to. Defense has the responsibility of covering all eligible receivers or pay the price. Is there an advantage being gained by not calling out the intended reciever, the board is stopped when the pass is made? If player is open he should be able to make a catch in my opinion. Defense is pivoting to tackle anyway. As an offense my job is to not throw it to the defensive players and hit eligible receivers thats it!! Help me out. Is this just dumb rookie talk? |
recievers...
Calling recievers i think is important for several reasons...
1. if you have more then one reciever in a given area and your allowed to just "wing and pray" the football into that area and hit whoever..its not a skill ..its just dumb luck. 2. how is the ref and your opponent supposed to know where to look for a catch if you dont tell them where your throwing?? this game goes so fast.. especially passing..its a blur...so if your just winging the ball around haphazzard, how can anyone reasonably ref, look for a pic or completion. 3. even if a reciver appears to be wide open, you may not see a potential interception happen as i have seen people passing one way, and the ball for whatever reason fly in another way and hit someone 5 yards away. also the qb 4 in a row stack i think is rediculous....i mean..wow...we call for realism constantly..when has anyone EVER seen a center, qb, rb and fb all dive behind each other?? just my take . |
Quote:
It's what I like in that rule, because it's an important aspect of the game of football, these little seconds after the snap, when the general is taking command. Not speaking of realism or anything, just catching one dramatic moment in that game. :D If in MF you allow the O coach to take all the time he wants to choose the receiver, or worst, let him try to complete the pass (stick or ttqb) and let the luck decide wich man is receiving, I think you loose a great aspect of the game... Of course it's just my personal point of view, not competitor or whatever champ of something :D |
Picking apart, not defending.
I think it idiotic to not punt when you are supposed to. Having said that if a coach wants to be that stupid then let them.
Calling out receivers: Good insight into why it is done. I just don't think you should be punished for not hitting the intended receiver especially if you are talking turn and burn. Just my thoughts. |
NEFL - Philly league
In the NEFL you can have your safeties set to spin on TTCs. After a pass completion you are allowed to turn the dial and pivot the player to make the tackle. However, you are not allowed to lift the figure to look at the dial.
You are allowed to mark your dial so that you can properly straighten him out, just not allowed to look at the dial. What's up with that? I could never understand why you would be able to adjust the dial, just not look at it. Joe G |
Harrisburg BuzzBall League ...
I don't care for the onside kick rules the way they are currently.
I plan on talking to RM about some changes on that, I got some edumacation at the Philly league with their kick rules, I liked them. ;) |
It's not about not punting when you are supposed to, you guys are missing the entire concept. If I am moving the ball and I am on my own 40 yard line and it's 4th and 8, why the hell can't I go for it?!
Why should a rule set take away the opportunity for a game breaker? In the NFL and NCAA that is not the case. That is the idiotic part to me. Those of you crying out for realism and simulation can't have it both ways. Boat bases for example, why limit the number? If you want realism and simulation, do NFL/NCAA teams limit themselves to only two first string receivers on the field? I just find some rules a little dated and people are reluctant to change. |
I would like to see a minimum 2 yard neutral zone (1 yard on each side of LOS)...with only the center up on the ball. Oh...and all foreward armed defensive figures outside the tackles (cover corners) should have their base a minimum 3 yards off the LOS. This would give the the split ends in shootout style a fraction of a chance to not get grabbed and it would create more movement on the LOS in between the tackles. This would also create more room for WRs after pivot audiles in most rule sets. Nothing worse then those cover corner arms hanging over the LOS and locked up on a reciever before the play even starts. I would go as far as to say that if the cover corner is caught over the 3 yard neutral zone then the WR opposite him would get a free pivot audible!

NICE POST
Coaches
Excellent job in your responses. IM GLAD WE ALL CAN VOICE OUR DISPLEASURES WITHOUT ANYONE GETTING OFFENDED. ANY RULE CREATOR. 1) AGREE WITH SHABBY, I think all forced punt rules should be banned. You cannot create a rule for secondary reasons. ( preventing a coach from quitting). When you force a coach to punt you have blatantly taken the game out of the coaches hand for no reason. Do we remember new england vs the colts last year. Bill belichik went for it on 4th 1 on there own 30 or so. THEY DID NOT MAKE IT AND THE COLTS SCORED EASILY. Belichik was killed in the press for the next few weeks. DID THE REF WALK OVER TO HIM AND SAY BEFORE HAND, " YOU CANT GO FOR IT HERE, YOU HAVE TO PUNT ". Let the coach decide what he wants to do, not an uness rule. 2)MIKE ROBERTSON IS RIGHT, I would like to see more detailed shifts and motion play before the snap. Not just the guys in the backfield. There are a million offensive strategies surrounded by many shifts and motions. The defense should be able to show you one package and change it entirely ( all players) during a 10 to 15 second shift period. IE, the d shows no blitz during the set up. at the start of the shift period he should be able to walk 4 blitzers up tp the line if he wants. Also the offense can show 1 line set up and change it entirely. IE, line set straight, then change to 3 pulling guards and move the TE to the other side. 3) 35/45 CLOCK. Im not sure why 10 seconds were take away from the offense. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY COACHES CAN USE THAT ADDL 10 SECONDS. Switch personnel in and out of the game is crucial for many coaches. *** IM NOT COMPARING THE M.P.F.L TO OTHER LEAGUES AND THERE RULES BUT D... IF HE DID NOT GET IT RIGHT. Both coaches set up simultaneously for 45 seconds like the nfl. When your done you must say set. Any one caught with there hand on the field when the 45 second timer goes off is an automatic DELAY OF GAME. NO EXCEPTIONS ! The penalty is enforced right then and there and the yards will be marked off on the field. You better say say set by 43 seconds. So why not 45/50 or 45/55. Why take away 10 seconds from the offense. The defense is still getting there adjustment period regardless. 3) Quarterback blocking on running plays, i think it would be more interesting to see what running teams can do without the extra help of a blocking qb. 4)I AGREE WITH MICHIGAN JOE, need to fix the neutral zone line play between teams. I notice in some nfl games that teams are way off the ball. In electric football, this would lead to watching your players do there job as an individual and not be caught up in traffic jams. mantaraydre |
Interesting
I like topics like that. You can't imagine how much it is important for enthusiast but beginners MF players. You can read the rulesets, but without topics like that, you can't understand everything of it. In the same idea, videos of games are usefull to "feel" the game.
Of course, I'm speaking for foreign players first, since we can't play in leagues and meet all the MF enthusiasts since most of them are in USA. I know that everything is a lot more easy to understand and learn on a real meeting. Whern I read the discussion here, it's funny to see that the points I had difficulties with when i started to play, are the same points we 're talking about now : punts "deployement" timing and position (LOS neutral zone, etc..) receivers calling and passing etc... the funny thing is that everyone can pick up interesting rules in each ruleset here. Perhaps we should have a MFCA "compendium" where we can find all the several option rules for each points we're talking about, around a core ruleset ? |
This is why I enjoy playing solitaire. If I don't like a rule, I can change it, modify it or eliminate it. Some of the rules I've seen from other leagues just leave me shaking my head wondering 'why?' It almost seems like the leagues are afraid to try something different. Some examples:
You can't modify the kicker! Why? If I can add a spring to him and make him kick better, so can anyone else. Besides, guys modify the passer, so why can't you modify the kicker??? :rnt; :rnt; You can't use bases with rounded fronts for your receivers! Why? You allow defenders with their arms grabbing and not letting go. A person needs to be able to do something to get the receiver open. Oh, I see. You're not supposed to be able to get your receiver open because it wouldn't be fair. :dohdh: :dohdh: And then ther's my personal favorite: You can't paint the bases! Why? I can paint a rookie base and it still weighs .8g. I can paint a TTC base and it still weighs 1.2-1.3g. If I'm within the limit, why not paint? You allow figures to be painted and guys glob on gallons of clear coat to get them up to their weight limit, but that's ok. Why the hypocracy? The paint adds extra weight. But I'm still within the limit. The paint makes them extra slippery. Yeah, right. I've got 25+ teams with painted bases that'll blow that theory out of the water. It's just not fair to those that don't paint their bases. Well, there's nothing stopping them from painting their bases! :nhnh: :dohdh: :fghttt: :rnt; :fghttt: mtmstnks   mtmstnks :dohdh: |
Didn't realize this many guys wanted to pick
apart their own rule set! ppls$ lffng$
@ Joe. Nobody ever spun their dials...so I don't know if it was a rule or not to do it? Most guys never put that player back where he was in the first place. That's why I think they only allowed pivots...not picking up the player @Shabby - If you were moving the ball you wouldn't be on 4th!!:dohdh: :fghttt: Stop crying and punt the ball!!! That's what real coaches do! Where's the freakin wifi??? @Al - You may only paint a base to get uniform. But we have others that will push and stretch any and every rule. We have a 3.3 limit....no adding weight. So you see guys with a pile of mod podge on the platform or grass stacked on up to the players knee to add that lil extra. Or over coat them! NEFL I don't like that we have to announce the onside kick...I wouldn't mind seeing the surprise attempt. Nat'l |
Another thing
It has changed a lil bit with the new plastic, and new stuff being able to compete. But in the old days the guys with deep pockets would be able to dominate because they had more resources than those who didn't. Some guys couldn't get brown bases, some didn't know who was selling monroe shells or dials. Only a select few could afford a 67 big man team..
So in the NEFL they limited or banned some equip to keep the field leveled. So when you ask why isn't this allowed or that? Is it ez access for everyone? Can I go on miggle and order 100 pill balls for a season? Are those bullet bases still being produced? This thread was just to get some thinking, and to put the shoe on the other foot. We always go somewhere to play and say I don't like this or that...now we get to look in the mirror on this post and do it to our own league! :rnt; I have to run guys, have to pick up mantaray dre!!!! Help set up the tables! Nat'l |
Good luck F.O.T.H. and other Philly coaches hope you all have a great super bowl!!

.8 is .8 1.3 is 1.3 painted or unpainted, if the weight is within limit, why not allow it?? To make a rule based on unsupported baseless assumptions is just plain silly. Lynn was asking the same thing in an earlier post. Like me, he can't stand seeing all the different colored bases out there. Having a team with all grass green bases just looks so much better than having orange, brown, white, black, green, blue, red, yellow and purple mixed together. Now, I will admit that my scale is only in tenths, so I don't really know if my base weighs .77g or .84g All I know is that it reads .8g, which is good enough for me. I really don't think .07g is going to make a squat worth of difference in strength. I have teams from last year that had unpainted bases ( Mennonites and Zombies) This year I painted them and you know what? Neither team is doing any better than they were last year. There is absolutely no difference in strength that I've been able to notice between painted and unpainted bases. But they sure do look 100% better! frstplc :nhnh: frstplc |
I kind of agree with Shabby about giving the coach the decision at all times when to punt or not, but I do see the problem if you allow that. There are guys out there who pass so well and have such a good defensive team that they will never punt. This will lead to them racking up more points against weaker competition....and they will pour it on. I can see guys running for a few downs in an effort to get those running stats up and then going to the air on 4th to convert....since they never miss a pass. That demoralizes rookies and folks who are in it more for fun than winning at all costs. I understand, that is reality....but aren't we trying to grow the hobby? I like the LAEFL rules on this...you can go for it on your side of the field if you are behind and in the 4th quarter....and that is fairly realistic. I think you can always go for it on the opponent's side of the field.
I also hate the rules that restrict stuff like the bigger ball (pill), # of boat bases, # of cover corners....etc. If it can be made, then it can be countered. Does the opponent have plenty of boat bases? Guess you need more cover corners. Does the opponent pass all the time? Guess you need a D-line with their hands up. Can't cover his receivers? Time for guys to back peddle or spin around in zone positions....etc, etc. I do understand weight, height, proportion restrictions though. I have seen some figures that look like they are 9 feet tall in scale, or weigh 500 pounds. That is just ridiculous. |
Don't forget!
The cover conrners that have jousting sticks for arms. There should be some length restrictio from base out. I wish someone would check me like some of these figures. There is one trying to standing on the edge of the figure looking like frankenstein or something out of a Thriller video.
If the players were real that guy would get toasted every time with a simple swim move. Anytime I see that on the field I think if you ain't cheating then you ain't trying. I know it's part of the game you should not have to spend tons of money, make figures to compete. Oh, by the way, get that low Miggle running back. Beats them everytime! thmbsp$ thmbsp$ |
jeff, shabby and ken
Good reviews on the punt rule. I think jeff sees the bigger picture. It not just about forcing you to kick but what about the stronger coaches who pass really well? They will never punt! I am one of those who will never kick it away. Here is a compromise. In the 1st - 3rd quarters you can go for it on 4th down no more than 2 times. This offers reasonable compromise and at the same time forces coaches to use this opporunity strategically instead of all of the time making the game unrealistic! I am more proactive than reactive so I suggest that as we talk about rules that we don't like let's have a compromisable alternative to bring to the table.
Ken, I hear you're one of the best tweakers in the land. Create a base that can mimic the swim move. Hint hint. It can be done. I have 1 and he runs about 50 yards down field after words. If a cover corners arms are 2 long he will tilt 4ward and not be very functional at all. I love this thread! Good luck FOTH with the NEFL championship game. I really wanted 2 make it but not enuff notice. I owe you a visit! You do a great job of supporting everyone's stuff. I promise I'm there next year! Give me at least a month notice. |
Mike
It prohibits play with stock figures. Not a problem with the tweaking as you know. But holding is not allowed, chucking is. That's holding, then hanging on.
I already know what you are referring to Mike (hint/hint). I'll just beat them off the ball and go for 80 and a score . . . if I hit him and the box doesn't take it away. I am just saying it's a great place to hide your scrubs! :rtfl: |
Cover corner arms
Just wanted to respond to a cover corner arms hanging over the line of scrimmage at set-up. This is and should be off-sides on the defense. I have lock down cover corners, but their base must be positioned at least 1.5 yards from the LOS in order for the arms to not be offsides. Allow for a receiver/TE to be pivoted and he has better potential to beat that cover corner jam.
|
Punting
In my ruleset we actually kick the ball with the TTQB. We also allow for quick kicks which really gives a coach some interesting strategy! I have developed two TTQB kickers and my kicking game is excellent. With real kicking in EF, a coach will use his kicker for board position (coffin corner kicks, etc.) It allows for a coach to use special teams to win a game. With practice and a good ruleset, the kicking game is terrific. The offense can fake punt or punt. It does not matter and should not matter, the offense should be able to use their 4 downs in any way. Make the defense play every play. But, one last thing, if a Coach is good with his kicker, you will find him not making stupid fake punt decisions.
