ECFA 2010-11 (Ed's Colege Football Association)
2 Attachment(s)
The new ECFA season is underway! And it opened in a big way with a classic between Nebraska and Purdue.
1st qtr - First drives for each were empty, with Purdue punting and Nebraska fumbling. The latter led to the game's first score, a 51-yard field goal for Purdue that made it 3-0 with 6:11 to play. Nebraska responded, getting a 31-yard kickoff return from Gilleylan, then a 15-yard run by Robinson that was compounded by a 15-yard Purdue facemask penalty. A 21-yard pass from QB Green to tight end Adams cleared the way for a game-tying 37-yard field goal. Following an interception by Dennard, the Cornhuskers faced 4th-and-2 at the Purdue 19 on the last play of the quarter, but Legate's run came up a yard short. PURDUE 3, NEBRASKA 3 2nd qtr - Nebraska nearly doubled their total early after a 31-yard punt return by Compton, but a 56-yard field goal was no good. Purdue then held the ball for nearly 6 minutes, driving 54 yards on 10 plays, culminating in McBurse's 19-yard touchdown run. The Boilermakers doubled their lead minutes later after a Nebraska punt. K. Smith caught passes of 10 and 13 yards, then McBurse powered in from the 1 with just 23 seconds left in the half. But that was more than enough time for Nebraska, as at the 46 with 7 seconds remaining, Green found Reed, who outraced the Purdue defense for a 54-yard half-ending score. PURDUE 17, NEBRASKA 10. 3rd qtr - The teams traded punts to start. Purdue got it back with 7:31 to play and were down to the Nebraska 1 after a 42-yard punt return by Quinn and a 27-yard pass to K. Smith. But Marve was intercepted by Cassidy in the end zone, the first of two picks for the Nebraska defender. Nebraska turned the turnover into points, as Robinson ran in from 27 yards on a drive keyed by a 53-yard pass from Green to Cooper. PURDUE 17, NEBRASKA 17. 4th qtr - The opening play of the frame from the Nebraska 25 was Cassidy's second pick. Three plays later, Robinson ran around right end and was free, scampering 64 yards for Nebraska's third straight TD. But, the extra point was no good. Purdue had to punt, but got a break when the Husker returner, Smith, fumbled. C. Smith recovered for Purdue, which tacked on a 45-yard field goal with 7:56 left. Following a punt, Purdue appeared ready to retake the lead, but McBurse fumbled at the Nebraska 3, and Meredith recovered. The Cornhuskers, however, couldn't escape their own end zone on 3rd down, and Robinson was tackled for a safety. Purdue got it after the free kick, but seemed dead in the water following four straight incompletions. At the Purdue 40, Nebraska just had to run it out with 1:21 left, though Purdue had 3 time outs. Robinson lost 5 on first down, and then two incompletions followed. That left the Cornhuskers with a decision. 4th-and-15 from the Purdue 45. They were in field goal range, but it wasn't a strong chance. They could go for it, but 15 yards was a long way to go. They could punt, and risk a return, but they might get a touchback. Nebraska punted - and immediately realized they had made the wrong decision. Quinn fielded the short punt at the 12 and returned it 52 yards. With 19 seconds left, an incompletion trimmed the clock to 11. Still with 1 time out, the Boilermakers could run whatever needed, and a 16-yard catch by Adams was made more damaging when Nebraska was hit with a facemask penalty. With the ball at the 10, and 3 seconds left, the Boillermakers lined up for a 27-yard field goal ... ... GOOD!! GAME OVER!!! PURDUE 25, NEBRASKA 23. That Marve kid just...
got hurt in real life. He's out for the season. His daddy was a pretty good player for Buffalo (Eugene Marve).
I saw he's been throwing that rock, 22-40 in the air. Robinson had some nice stats on the ground (19-88). I like numbers like that. To me, that means you're getting in a lot of quality reps and that's what you want to do in playing miniature football. Great recap and look forward to MANY, MANY, more Ed! Reg |

GAME RECAP - FLORIDA vs. TEXAS
![]() ![]() FIRST QUARTER Ugly stuff early, as Texas throws a pick after a 50-yard completion to Goodwin, Florida fumbles, then both teams punt twice. But with 3:10 left, Florida's defense snatches the early momentum, as Jones intercepted a Gilbert pass and took it 25 yards to the house. Texas' next drive sputtered as the quarter ended. FLORIDA 7, TEXAS 0. SECOND QUARTER With its defense hammering Texas, the Gators gambled on 4th-and-10 from the Longhorns 44, but Brantley's pass was incomplete. Following a Texas punt, the Gators drove 52 yards in 10 plays, but had to settle for a 40-yard field goal. A solid Hill punt return (18 yards) set Florida up at the Texas 40, and a 9-play drive ensued, culminated by a 9-yard pass from Brantley to his running back Demps - who messed with Texas all game long. FLORIDA 17, TEXAS 0. THIRD QUARTER Florida appeared ready to put the game away, starting the half by going 67 yards on 10 plays. But the 11th play was a pick, with A. Williams intercepting for the Longhorns. They couldn't capitalize though, largely due to Gilbert being sacked by Black on 3rd-and-12. After a short punt, Demps broke right, cut left, sped toward the end zone, and flipped over the speed control nozzle to celebrate his 46-yard touchdown run! After another Brantley pick, Texas finally woke up, as running back Johnson caught a 31-yard pass, then finally found positive yardage in the running game, breaking a 24-yard scamper to the Florida 20. Goodwin caught a touchdown pass and a 2-point pass. FLORIDA 24, TEXAS 8. FOURTH QUARTER Gilbert found some open targets in the final period, but the Longhorn running game was bankrupted nearly throughout. With no holes to run through, and not much talent at tailback, Texas couldn't sustain any drives. Florida relied on Demps right, middle, and left to run the clock, and set up a pair of field goals. The Longhorns desperately tried to march in the final 2:04, and were helped by a pair of Gators penalties, but the game ended fittingly, with Johnson stuffed for a 5-yard loss on a sweep. FINAL SCORE: FLORIDA 30, TEXAS 8. Florida is 1-0 (0-0 East). Texas is 0-1 (0-0 West). I shot video of the Demps touchdown run - have to see if I can get that posted. Stats to follow in the next post. Only adjustment I think I'm going to make after Week 1 is to give the fullbacks TTCs instead of rookie bases to try and open up the running game a little bit. For 1-back offenses, I'll allow the QB to run into the line to block, since there's no fullback. Other than the rushing (NCAA averages less than 2 yards per carry so far), I think everything else is pretty much on point. The system as I play it, especially on pass completions, is really stressing the importance of safety and linebacker play, away from the scrum at the line of scrimmage. Very curious to get through Week 1 of the college season to see how everything shakes out. Definitely the preliminary rankings of the teams I've seen so far is: 1. Florida 2. Purdue 3. Nebraska 4. Texas Michigan and Kentucky take the field next. Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: |
Loved the recaps Ed. I know how tough those 4th down decisions are to make especially in a solitaire league. So many times I've had my decisions backfire. Isn't it something how penalties and strange things always seem to happen in the final 2 minutes. Nebraska should rebound. Is Florida that good or is Texas that bad? Got my Richmond Rebels team today and they look sweet. Will post pictures soon. I will also have a game recap tonight.

Caught the recap of the Falcons win. Should be a good one with them vs. Houston in the Super Bowl. Even in my short NFL season, I'm already looking forward to getting to what will be Super Bowl I for me. Texas is pretty bad. The offensive line was overpowered by Florida's front 7. The RB base isn't stellar to start with, and with no holes to go through, he turned backward on most plays before he was even tackled. Texas had some bad luck with the box on passes, and for whatever reason, my passing was off for the Longhorns, as well. They'll see better days, but based on what I've seen from Nebraska and now Michigan in the current game I'm playing, I'd be surprised if Texas contended in the Western Conference. And there's still Ohio State, BYU, Oklahoma, and Illinois to play. I knew when I based up the teams that Florida had some talent offensively at the skill positions. Demps' base is just wild enough to be dangerous. He'll screw up a bunch of plays, but if he hits the second level, forget it - he's gone. He might run to the end zone sideways, but he'll get there. :) Girlfriend visits starting tomorrow ppls$ , so it may take a few more days to get Michigan-Kentucky completed. :dohdh: Michigan leads, 7-3, early in the second quarter. Forcier hit Odoms for a 67-yard touchdown pass on the Wolverines' third snap of the game. ppls$ Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: |
ECFA Week 1 Game report
MICHIGAN WOLVERINES ![]() VS. KENTUCKY WILDCATS ![]() FIRST QUARTER An explosive start, as Michigan gets the ball at the 38 and on 3rd-down, Forcier hits Odoms for a 67-yard score. Kentucky's safeties were caught pinching up, and none could catch the steady-running Odoms from behind. The Wildcats responded with a field goal, then thwarted the next Wolverines drive when Trevathan sacked Forcier for an 11-yard loss, removing Michigan from field goal range. The teams then traded interceptions over the next four plays, and the quarter ended with Kentucky facing 4th-and-1 at its 41. MICHIGAN 7, KENTUCKY 3 SECOND QUARTER The Wildcats went for it and got it when Hartline got 8 on a QB sneak. But the drive stalled and a sequence of three straight punts started. Michigan then used the Forcier-to-Odoms hook up to stun Kentucky again, this time from 79 yards. UK was ready for it, with 4 people deep, but none could make the tackle. Again, the Wildcats answered with a field goal. But this time, they kept the momentum when on Michigan's next drive, Forcier fumbled when sacked at the 39. A 31-yard pass from Hartline to Cobb gave UK 1st-and goal, and Matthews caught a 4-yard pass to draw Big Blue within 1 when the bands took the field. MICHIGAN 14, KENTUCKY 13 THIRD QUARTER Getting ball to start the second half after their explosive finish to the first, the Wildcats drove 62 yards in 6 plays, culminated by Cobb's 27-yard touchdown catch to give Kentucky the lead. Unable to run the ball, Michigan's offense began to sputter, and with Odoms double-teamed, the other receivers rarely stepped up, despite gaping holes in the Kentucky secondary. Michigan punted, and Kentucky scored again, another 6-play drive, this time 43 yards, ending in Locke's 20-yard touchdown run. Facing 3rd-and-1 at the 48 on their next series, the Wolverines couldn't get the yard and turned it over on downs. Kentucky, however, punted on the quarter's final play. KENTUCKY 27, MICHIGAN 14 FOURTH QUARTER Kentucky also punted to start the quarter, in fact, they punted 3 times in the frame. But Michigan's ground game was completely bankrupted by the Kentucky front four, and Forcier was not sharp. Without the bomb to Odoms to rely on, the Wolverines offense wobbled into oblivion. Smith picked off two more passes in the quarter, giving him 3 for the day. Michigan did kick a 45-yard field goal at 8:13, but never threatened afterward. FINAL SCORE: Kentucky 27, Michigan 17 Stats in the next post. Next up: Florida State vs. Ohio State Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: |

ECFA Week 1 Game Report:
OHIO STATE ![]() vs. FLORIDA STATE ![]() FIRST QUARTER A big start for the 'Noles, as Thompson returns the opening kickoff 63 yards, and Ponder hits him for a 36-yard score just 1:11 in. After a Buckeye punt, Florida State strikes again, as Ponder finds the other running back, Pryor, for a 30-yard score. Ohio State holds the ball for 6:09 but only manages a field goal following a 29-yard pass from T. Pryor to Stoneburner. FSU wasn't having that, and scored three plays into their next possession, when Ponder ran up the middle and the Seminoles got a hat on a hat all over the field, allowing the QB to scamper 66 yards for yet another score. FLORIDA STATE 21, OHIO STATE 3. SECOND QUARTER The Buckeyes answered less than a minute into the frame, as Boren caught a 57-yard TD pass from T. Pryor. Following a pair of punts, the Seminoles finally got back on the board with a pair of field goals, the last coming as time expired. OSU punted 3 times after the touchdown. FLORIDA STATE 27, OHIO STATE 10. THIRD QUARTER Getting the ball to start the half, the Buckeyes scored early again, as Sanzenbacher authored a 56-yard return, and Saine caught a 42-yard pass from T. Pryor, cutting the margin to 10. But both offenses fell asleep from there. Four punts rounded out the quarter. FLORIDA STATE 27, OHIO STATE 17. FOURTH QUARTER Down to the Florida State 21, disaster struck Ohio State as T. Pryor was intercepted at the Seminoles 15 by Parks, who had a stellar defensive game (12 tackles, sack, interception). The Seminoles kept the ball for nearly 5 minutes, but missed a long field goal attempt. Still in the game, but facing 4th-and-8 from the 45 with 4:45 to play, Ohio State managed a pass to Boren, but he was tackled 3 yards short of the line to make. The 'Noles pushed forward 23 yards and kicked a final field goal with 37 seconds left, putting the final margin at 13. FINAL SCORE: FLORIDA STATE 30, OHIO STATE 17. Stats in the next post. The Seminoles were explosive early, gaining 163 yards in the first quarter alone. I was surprised they geared down, but their defense had more than enough support, stifling tOSU running game at just about every turn. FSU is a very, very good team. Little light at receiver, but talented everywhere else. Next game: ILLINOIS vs. VIRGINIA Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: |

ECFA Week 1 Game Report:
ILLINOIS ![]() vs. VIRGINIA ![]() FIRST QUARTER A slow-developing game saw a scoreless first quarter, as eaach team punted on its first possession, then Illinois came up empty on a 6:09, 11-play drive when a 49-yard field goal was no good. Frierson intercepted Verica four plays later, and the quarter ended with Illinois on the move at the Virginia 45. ILLINOIS 0, VIRGINIA 0. SECOND QUARTER Illinois missed a field goal of its own after holding the ball for the first 4:41 of the quarter. Virginia finally broke the ice on its next drive, as Verica dumped off to Fells-Danzer, who scampered 59 yards for the score. Illinois then embarked on the season's strangest drive. Twice, Scheelhaase was intercepted, once by Taliaferro, and once by Mosley. But at the end of both runbacks, the Virginia interceptors fumbled, and Illinois recovered. The Illini made the Cavaliers pay when Jenkins caught a 13-yard score to tie the game. ILLINOIS 7, VIRGINIA 7. THIRD QUARTER Virginia held the ball for 3:50 to open the second half, reaching the Illinois 35 before three incompletions necessitated a 52-yard field goal attempt that failed. After a punt, the Cavaliers' kicker got another chance from 42 and this time his kick was true with 4:35 to play. Illinois had to punt again, and Virginia had 2nd-and-12 at the Illinois 41 to open the final period. VIRGINIA 10, ILLINOIS 7. FOURTH QUARTER There was once was a famous book called "Things Fall Apart." For UVA, after a missed 45-yard field goal with 12:52 to play, that book title rang true. First, Illinois drove 65 yards in 7 plays (3:49), culminating in Becker's 5-yard run to give the Illini the lead. After a punt, Illinois needed just two plays to expand the lead, when Jenkins caught an 8-yard score from Scheelhaase. Virginia's comeback drive was shortlived, as Frierson got his second pick of the game and ran it back 31 yards to the Virginia 14 with 1:59 left. Jenkins caught his third score of the game three players later (14 yards, through double coverage and past a safety) to seal it. FINAL SCORE: Illinois 28, Virginia 10. * Neither of these teams are that good. But Illinois' Jenkins at WR is a handful. On a red Miggle rookie base, he burst through double-teams featuring 2 TTCs, then walloped the safety over the top to get open. Virginia's corners are very weak, though, so we'll see what he does vs. better competition. Virginia has a decent offensive line, and their running game is a threat this season, if their defense can keep them in games. Stats in the next post. Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: |

I have gumball machine helmets for 12 of the 14 teams. But I need Ohio State and BYU to complete the set. Once I have all 14, I'll just take pictures of those and use them instead. Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: |
ECFA Week 1 Game Report:
OKLAHOMA ![]() VS. ![]() SYRACUSE FIRST QUARTER The teams traded punts before Syracuse mounted the first mini-drive, going 35 yards on 7 plays (helped by 20 yards in OU penalties) to kick a 32-yard field goal. The Orangemen got the ball rigth back on Smith's interception of Jones, and stuck it in the end zone 5 plays later when quarterback Nassib piled over from the 2. OU just entered Syracuse territory as the period ended. SYRACUSE 10, OKLAHOMA 0. SECOND QUARTER The OU drive stalled at the 10, but a 27-yard field goal brought the Sooners back within 7. The Orangemen, however, then marched on an 11-play, 75-yard drive that took nearly 6 minutes, keyed by an OU roughing the passer play when a 3rd-down pass early in the drive fell incomplete. Bailey caught a 9-yard pass from Nassib for the culminating touchdown. After a Sooner punt, Syracuse added a 51-yard field goal to end the half. SYRACUSE 20, OKLAHOMA 3. THIRD QUARTER It was more of the same to start for the Sooners, who punted on the half's first possession, then watched Syracuse march to its 31. But McFarland's interception seemed to turn the tide. A 27-yard completion from Jones to Murray would have had Oklahoma set up at the Syracuse 16, but Murray fumbled and lost it with 4:44 left. Syracuse had the ball the rest of the quarter. SYRACUSE 20, OKLAHOMA 3. FOURTH QUARTER The Orangemen ran another 2:56 off the clock to start the period, kicking a 29-yard field goal to extend the lead. The drive went 72 yards in 15 plays, taking 7:40 off the clock. Impressive. But the Sooners rallied. Earning a first down on a Syracuse facemask penalty, Oklahoma cashed in on the next play, as Murray caught a pass and scampered 66 yards for a score. The extra point was missed, however. The teams traded punts, and Syracuse added another, giving OU a final chance with 2:39 left, 3 time outs, and down 14. But after a 22-yard completion to Murray, Jones was intercepted at the 43, and the game was basically over. Final Score: Syracuse 23, Oklahoma 9. Syracuse's offensive line and front 7 defensively for far too strong for Oklahoma to contend with. When OU could pass, only one receiver of 5 was getting open each play and that was usually a running back. It may be just that Syracuse was facing bad competition, but they looked very strong in this one. Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: |

Teams for new solitaire leagues
Hey Ed, It looks like we both have Florida State and Clemson as common teams that we can use as our non conference teams. We need them to play 9 games each so why don't you play FSU 5 games and I will play them 4 times since your FSU team looks better than mine. I will play 5 Clemson Games and you can play the 4 times. If this is okay by you I will send you the schedules for the games I will play for FSU and Clemson. Are you using FSU's and Clemsons 2010 roster. I need to know this so I make sure I play the same guys for stat purposes. How are you coming along with my Michigan Stae and Fresno State teams?
Talk to you later. Mike |
Glad to see your back in the game

Syracuse gets Clemson in Week 3, don't know how good Clemson is yet. Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: |
... And finally, the close to Week 1 in the ECFA.
It's BYU vs. Clemson in the kind of matchup you'll only ever really see on the Miniature Football game board. ![]() ![]() FIRST QUARTER BYU got the ball first and moved the ball 33 yards to the Clemson 43, where the Cougars went for it on 4th-and-7, but Nelson's pass was incomplete. After a Clemson punt, there were three interceptions in four plays, two by Nelson, setting the Tigers up at their 40. Clemson converted the good fortune, going just 34 yards in 10 plays but kicking a 43-yard field goal. CLEMSON 3, BYU 0. SECOND QUARTER BYU answered in a big way, mixing the pass and run to reach the Clemson 2, where tailback Kariya powered over for the score. But on the next play from scrimmage, the Tigers took the lead back, as Parker hit Ache for a 57-yard touchdown. BYU quickly tied it 4 minutes later on a 45-yard field goal. But Clemson wasn't done. After the teams traded punts, three straight completions, two to the TE Allen, and the last for a 35-yard score, put the Tigers back in front. Nelson then threw his third interception, and both teams missed field goals to end the half. CLEMSON 17, BYU 10. THIRD QUARTER The poor kicking continued, as both teams again missed 40+-yard chances to open the second half. Following a pair of punts, Clemson drove inside the BYU 10 to close a scoreless period. CLEMSON 17, BYU 10. FOURTH QUARTER From 1st-and-goal at the 8, the Tigers ended up with 4th-and-goal from the 9. This time the kicker was true from 26 yards. BYU's special teams continued their comedy on the next possession, however, missing a FG try from 53. With 11:28 to go up 10, the Tigers tried to run some clock, but losses on a pair of runs meant Allen's 13-yard catch on 3rd down wasn't enough. Following the punt, Nelson brushed aside his first-half struggles, and guided the Cougars on an 84-yard scoring drive, where only 1 of the 8 plays was a run. Nelson's 31-yard strike to Kariya brought BYU within 3. Still, Clemson looked good when, after getting the ball with 5:53 to play, three straight runs chewed up 1:45 and earned a first down. But on a rollout pass on 1st-and-10 from the 43, Parker was picked by Kaveinga, who returned it to the Tigers 41. A 25-yard completion to Edwards moved the ball to the 16, before back-to-back holding penalties left BYU with 1st-and-30! No matter, Matthews caught a 23-yard pass to get it all back, and then caught a 10-yard TD pass 2 plays later to give the Cougars an improbable lead. Clemson's Dye, who previously had kickoff returns of 53 and 56 yards, was stopped for 20 on a great solo play by BYU's Atkinson, and the Tigers had just 18 seconds to work. Parker hit Jones for 30 to get it to midfield, but the 2nd- and 3rd-down passes fell incomplete as time ran out. Final score: BYU 24, CLEMSON 20. * Clemson has to find a running game to climb the polls. BYU's front four overran the Tigers' offensive line. BYU couldn't run much either, and in a battle of two 1-back offenses that throw the ball around, the low rushing totals weren't a surprise. But Clemson had no way to cover all of BYU's receivers, and Nelson gained yards threw the air in 15- to 20-yard chunks constantly. Neither team is great, but teams are going to have put some points on the board to beat BYU. Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: |
