Norb,

Nebraska just happen to be my 2nd favorite school in all the NCAA so I know a lot of their past players. The ones in red are ones that I would go with if I were to create a team of Corn.

It's good to see you are preparing for the CBSMF. I hope you will be coming to Vegas this year.

Nebraska has only retired three jersey numbers, generally retiring the player's jersey itself rather than the jersey number.

* #20 Johnny Rodgers (1970–1972)â€**
* #60 Tom Novak (1946–1949)
* #64 Bob Brown (1961–1963)

â€** Rodgers permitted his #20 jersey number to be worn by his son Terry, who played for Nebraska from 1986–1990, before it was again permanently retired.

Retired player jerseys

* #7 Eric Crouch (1998–2001)
* #15 Tommie Frazier (1992–1995)

Also, you've got to have...

the great George Flippin on the team. He played in 1892. He was the first black player at Nebraska and just the 5th to play at a predominately white institution.

Back in those days, Missouri refused to play the Cornhuskers because of Flippin and lost 1-0 in a forfeit. Flippin was Johnny Rodgers before he was the Player of the Century.

Reg nailed it. Here is the Wikipedia link that much of that info can be found.

If you have any specific questions that you can't find the answer to, I have afriend here in KC who is a NU aficionado and I am sure could answer any question you have about NU.

Reginald Rutledge 11-30-2010 11:34 PM

I forgot about...

Jeff Kinney (35) Tailback. He played in the 71 game. He was a fantastic back who averaged over 100 yards rushing.

I was watching that game back then. I was just 10 years old but I fell in love with that Cornhusker team. Jeff Kinney and Johnny "The Jet" Rodgers were my favorite players. That team was pretty young too.

There were a few more I may not have mentioned but were pretty outstanding on that team.

Rich Glover, my favorite defensive lineman. John Dutton, who would play for the Cowboys and Jerry Mertaugh was a 3 year starter. Back then, freshmen could not play with upperclassmen.

I think Rich Glover had about 23 tackles that day, something that still stands out to me. I say that because he was a D-Lineman playing against the wishbone schemes of Fairbanks.

IM Hipp was another good one who came later but Kinney is who started the great run at tailback and then others would follow.

Also, I am not sure if I included Broderick Thomas at NU.

I am a die-hard nebraska fan. I'm going to the big 12 championship in Dallas this weekend and am fired up!! Here's my opinions.
The best husker team, which some argue is the best college football team of all time would be the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Junior Miller was an awesome TE, you have to have Suh as a DT with Larry Jacobson or Rich Glover. Tommy Frazier was the best QB to ever play for the Huskers. Mike Rozier was the greatest runningback. Tom Rathman the best FB. Johnny Rodgers and Irving Fryar were the best receivers. Best Linemen were Dave Rimmington, Will Shields, and Bob Brown. Best defensive end was Grant Wistrom. Best linebacker was Tom Novak. Best corner was Ralph Brown. Best safety was Mike Brown. Best kicker is Alex Henery. Best Punter was Kyle Larson. I think you have to go with Devaney as the best coach, as he built the program up from shambles into a powerhouse.

eagskerfan 11-30-2010 11:54 PM

Fearless Frankie Solich was a heck of a FB, although undersized by today's standards. I think he had a game where he rushed for 199 yards against air force in the 60's.

Huskers

Norb,

Whenever I do an all-time college team I do three things to get the names, skintones, and numbers of who I want on it:

1) I go to drafthistory.com and click on the link for drafts by college. That will show you all the players ever drafted out of that school and what position they were. Usually a good barometer to make your list.

2) I then do an image search, first on google and then an ebay search to find out what number and skintone they were/are.

3) Any leftovers that I can't find numbers for, you can post here or also what I've done with success is go to the school's website and look up a contact info for the sports information dept. Usually you can find someone with a title of "assistant" in that department and then I either email or call them. I have yet to be denied any request for a couple of jersey numbers...just don't give them a list and expect them to fill in all of it or anything.
