Question of the Day: Why is there a Resurgence of Solitaire Play
I just got through talking to 2 coaches who say they have now been inspired to play solitaire miniature football after spending several hours with me talking about the game. There are so many reasons, varying wide and far.
What do you think is causing a resurgence in some circles to play the game in solitaire. Granted, it's not a method of play that everyone enjoys but I know, for myself, it keeps me active in the game and gives me a chance to continue to play on a regular basis. What's your appeal? Reg |
1. No travel
2. Few arguments ( somrtimes I fight with my self) 3. Did I say no travel 4. Childhood memories 5. Stay active in MF 6.Time( after you build the teams) 7. I think it is fun 8. Good way to get my son into action 9. No Travel 10.My rules 11. No schduleing problem 12.Play 10 plays if I want and go do whatever I want. I will stop there. |
For me . . .
Opportunites to relive some of my favorite games.
Continue to play, with no stress That's it. |
when I do play it...
... it's more about just playing without the extra drama ......
.... I get a chance to work on things that I can use the next time I play live... ... when I played with all 32 teams, I would do stats and stuff and look at the season in review and see if they avg out...... ... of course the color and pagentery of the NFL....... ... all time teams for the most part, so still can have GREATS still running the field...... k-lo |
I have been glad to see a resurgence in solitaire play and discussion on these boards. It's interesting to me to see how Reg, The Rookie, dogwood30, RavennaAl, etc., have gone about creating their leagues and doing different things in terms of teams, styles, schedules, etc.
I enjoy having a solitaire league (two, actually, with more to come), for a variety of different reasons: 1) It helps me make use of all the teams, bases, etc., that I have accumulated over the years. My 14-team ECFA season all came from teams I had lying around, or ones that I painted up. Didn't spend a time buying teams or bases for the league. Same is true for the EPFA, as all four teams are squads I had previously used in leagues and/or tournaments. 2) I like being the commissioner. I like deciding on the schedule, the rules, the uniforms teams will be painted in, etc. If I want to change something on the fly, I can. 3) I may play long games, but I rarely play them all in one sitting. I like being able to play for X amount of time, and then move on and do something else. 4) I like sharing the results and discussing my two leagues on the web site. I like seeing people's reactions when Team A loses to Team B for whatever reason, or when a player goes off for a big game. 5) I like sitting down and mapping out the future of my leagues, in terms of what expansion teams will be added, how many will be added, and what other features of the game I want to eventually add (stadium, lights, video, scoreboard, bigger board, etc.). 6) Playing solitaire allows me to introduce various components from different styles of play into my league without having to convince anyone else in a league to do it, too. I've never played in a league that used The Box, yet I use a form of it for my solitaire leagues. I only played two seasons in the NHFL, yet I use defensive formations requiring the D-Line, linebackers, and safeties to be specific distances apart when lining up. I might add the CBSMF scramble rule for the next week of play, haven't decided on that yet. I don't have a weight limit, and while I don't add weight to any figures, any and all figures are welcome. If I own them, they will be used. 7) Hopefully someone sees the fun I'm having with it and decides to start a solo league of their own, and then posts about it here. That's a victory. Another thing I thought of - and this relates very much to the project that dogwood30 has been working on.
He has created his own football history. He's about to play his 50th Super Bowl. Think about that! He has decades of memories now of games played, great players, great teams, close finishes, and now through the MFCA message board, he's been able to share that with all of us and we hang on every new result and set of photos that he posts. I'm hoping to create similar with my projects. I won't get 50 seasons done, but I hope to create a nice history of football - my own history - as it goes along. Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: $br# |

Megga Dittos!
For all the reasons listed and simply because I'm just getting back into MF and to play in any league is impossible due to dinstance and time restraints.
I'm playing my first solitaire league; just like I did when I was a kid. Only know I'm building that football history that has been mentioned, and loving it. Some night I'll put up some info on my league, how I run it, and my future plans. I love reading all about other leages and incorporating things I find interesting. ltsplbll |

Off to finish my Week 2 ECFA game between Kentucky and Purdue. It's a one-point game in the fourth quarter. UK are riding a 5-game winning streak over two seasons. They've only played five games. Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: $br# |

great post. most rasons already listed. i think, generally, its the cost of travel that is the number 1 thing regarding the majority.....just watch gas prices in the next 4 days, it will most likely go above 3 bux a gallon by sunday evening.
that said, i had a call from an old friend, derrick leffal, yesterday, he says he has been enjoying a pro and a college solitaire league for quite a while now. it was great to hear from him again too. almost got me to play a game today...but im holding out to play the last AFL season, i still need 3 more teams, then im set. |

What's the attraction to solitaire? Well, for starters, where else can I play with a bunch of Fairies and not have to listen to a bunch of whispering? ;)
What I like best is knowing that the teams playing each other are, for the most part, fairly equal. That on any given day, any team can win. I get to try out different formations and plays and just sit back and watch what happens, without worring about winning or losing. The little guys play to entertain me, I don't get caught up in having to win, because I'm actually coaching both teams. :rnt; :rnt; These are MY teams, and MY league. I'm having fun, and that's what it's all about. Besides, when I want to play against someone else, I just let them use one of my teams. It helps me out with the season, and hopefully, they had as much fun as I did. frstplc ppls$ thmbsp$ |
Ravenna Al, You made are Very...
important statement.
"They play to entertain you" How true and that's what I love about it. You never know what a player is going to do. You take him through the workouts and expect him to do one thing and he may totally fool you and do something else. One other thing I enjoy is just looking at the teams down low on the field, like when the offense and defense is at the line of scrimmage. You see the realism that you always wanted and you're living out a childhood dream! Reg |
Entertainment and more fantasy teams
Right on the money Al. That's what it's all about. Teams in your league have infinate possibilities but it all comes down to the games and the entertainment it provides. I love reading about your league because it is unique. I have spent time trying to think up teams like yours just for fun. Here are some of my zany ideas.
An all prison team using ficticious names from all football movies. A team of Star Troopers coached by Darth Vader. A team of astronauts called The Right Stuff wearing the bulky NASA spacesuits. A team of comic superheros. A team of sumo wrestlers wearing their numbers on their fanny belts. A team called Woodstock with players wearing psycodelic hippy clothes. Historical team of real Roman Trojan soldiers. A natural rival to the Ra. A team of real indians like Crazy Horse and Cochise with numbers war painted on their backs. Just a few silly ideas. Mike |
I don't know how you'd do it with the colors clashing and such, but an all-NASCAR team with the player numbers the same style as their car numbers, and sponsor logos on the front of the jerseys would be freaking sweet.
There you go Al or Mike ... the Raleigh Racers! Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: $br# |

The previous I game I finished tonight between Purdue and Kentucky showed exactly why I love playing solitaire.
Purdue vs. Kentucky. Both teams won their openers, this is the conference debut for both teams. Kentucky is the defending national champion, having gone 3-0 and then winning the Commonwealth Bowl over West Virginia, which is my national championship game, 21-9. With the season-opening, 27-17 win over Michigan, Kentucky had won all 5 games it had ever played. The Wildcats had never been held without a touchdown. Yet, on a night where nothing went right, the Wildcats managed a defensive stop, used their three time outs in the process, and with 3 minutes, 13 seconds left, stood on their own 10, down four points. 90 yards separated Kentucky and continuing its winning streak. 1st-and-10 from the 10: Tight end open over the middle for about a 15-yard game .... shake The Box ... INCOMPLETE! 2:53 to go. 2nd-and-10 from the 10: Running back slips out to the right for what would be a short gain ... shake The Box ... INCOMPLETE! 2:36 to go. 3rd-and-10 from the 10: Wide receiver open to the left about 20 yards down the field ... shake The Box ... throw it! Ball short-hops receiver. INCOMPLETE! 2:21 to go. 4th-and-10 from the 10: Wide receiver runs a deep cross behind linebackers and underneath fading safeties ... shake The Box ... throw it! COMPLETE!!! But he's down in bounds, and the clock doesn't stop for first downs in the ECFA. Pass plays take a long time, as well, because of the defensive run off, pivots, etc. The WR is tackled at the 35 ... players separated ... tick, tock, tick, tock ... have to get both teams lined up in accepted formations .... done ... snap board on, then right back off to serve as the quarterback spiking the ball ... DONE! .... stop the clock ... ... 4 seconds left! Time for one last play. I paused before lining it up, thinking about the rush of trying to get both teams lined up and set, properly, to execute every part of the play with something left on the clock. It was amazing; and more importantly, it was a whole lot of fun! On the final play, a receiver came open on a short route, and Purdue locked up everyone else. The pass was thrown and incomplete. Game over. Streak over! Kentucky goes down! There is no predicting what these players are going to do on the field, what way they will turn, who will show surprising strength and speed. Now there's a bit of history, too, as Purdue is the first team to ever declaw the mighty Wildcats. That's why I play. Ed wnnrcgr shkthbx: $br# |

Great minds think alike. And I thought the sumo wrestlers idea was way out there. Who knew? I really liked Ed's Nascar team idea. I can't wait to see pictures of these teams.

my reasons (at least main reasons) are
Freedom of playing when i wanted to play (or when my wife allowed me..)
No argues with some peoples Can take my time to play my games (4 quarters of 10 plays) Have ny tracking of my season ..and quite frankly i'm happy to play alone. I did participate in some chess, table hockey, table tennis major tournaments. Been there, done that. That's it Take it easy Benster |
Back to you original question...
Same as a lot of what has been already been written.
(1) I hope to transfer some of the outstanding talent to my competitive teams. (2) I think it is just a natural progression for some folk, especially after competing against live competition. It's kinda like - been there.... done that and now it's time to come back home. As you have stated, solitaire is not for everybody. Conversely, some also find-out that live competition is not for everyone. In my eyes :rllngs: this appears to be a real comprehensive list that supports the reasons for this "resurgence." Good questions. |

I actually took the year off because of personal reasons with my sons and all. I missed MF so I still tweaked bases, etc. I was so at peace. Beyond that I was tweaking bases for others and met a lot of people beyond shaking their hand at an event. I could tell you stories about league play that you would not believe because I wouldn't believe them myself had I not been there. One thing I can tell you is success has a costly price in league play. Right now I am happy mentoring others and doing my own thing. I have so much playing and tweaking experience that I am sharing it more. My sons are getting interested so that's five teams right there if I decide to do league again. Occassionally, I stop in and watch a couple league games, enjoy the company, and go home. |
