Roy Williams???
How do you have a Penalty named after you and you STILL do it!?! I have NEVER tackled anyone that way in all my years. Isn't it just as easy to go for the feet? I don't get it. mgngcrz mtmstnks
|
i dont know
Its kind of hard to think about how to tackle a person in the heat of the moment .Its really hard when they beat you on the angle and your just
trying to stop a big play . |
Sissy Way...
..to tackle! I have a 6" scar down the back of my neck from a guy who tackled me down the sideline when I played ball in Germany. Blood everywhere! And it was friggin practice!!! mgngcrz If you can't catch me, then dive for my feet! Have a seat and enjoy the game from home Mr. Kelly Rowland! I bet she can tackle better than that!
|
You know Jimbo
if I did'nt know better I think you were tryin to bait a Cowboys fan.
Erick |
He blaintly pulled McNabb down like that to try and injur him. I watched the game I saw the play. Williams caught him from behind. Grabbed his collar and fell straight to the ground.
|
A Blatant Intent to Injure!!
He should be out for the season. My thoughts of course. |
Haters.....
.....Man what happened to real football. Back in the day you tackled a guy anyway you could. Ronnie Lott was famous for leaving his feet like a rocket leading with his helmet to punish an opposing player, now you have to be almost grounded to tackle a player with your helmet leading the way. Football has come to such a money game that it is sickening. I used to use my forearm to give someone the blues up around the chin, especially fullbacks who like to chop block, now you hardly ever see someone punish someone with a forearm for risk of getting a penalty.
Clothes lines was a thing of beauty back in the day. Jack Tatum was my man because he brought you down anyway he could. With so many offensive players making the big dough the game is watered down now. Jimbo I would have loved to catch you from behind and broke you off a lil something. Making an offensive player bleed was my love for the game. Watching a lineman wipe blood from his mouth after I had just blown him up on a play made me get a ---- on. I played against one of the dirtiest lineman in my day his name was Chris Maumalanga. We had one of the best games with each other and still talk about the night we beat his team 40-0. The play I am talking about was an interception return by one of my teammates who now coaches with the Lions Clayton Lopez. Chris had caught me on an earlier play on a cut back run and just killed me, literally knocking me out. After sitting out a series I finally had my chance on this interception return. Once Lopez hit the sideline I was in front of him and saw Chris starting his pursuit. Now Chris is 6'2 370lbs. If you read up on him he got into several altercations with Giant players when he played with them including Mr. Strahan himself, who actually beat dat **********. So on this play it was payback time, as the play developed I peeled back looking for Chris like a heat sinking missile, saw him looking back running at a angle and took off with all my might, leaped in the air and caught Chris, helmet to helmet and buckled him. After about 30 seconds I came too with my whole right side dead from getting a stinger, but Chris had a gash in his lip as thick as a banana peel. Man the joy of that, what this story tells you is that on that play no penalty for the hit, in which in today’s game would garner a fine or ejection. This was in 89' so now 18yrs later things have changed. Roy Williams would have been a good teammate of LT. So however you have to bring them down do it!! Just my dimes worth!!! |
Good Story
...but you woulda never had to catch me, I woulda ran right at you! NAh. I was QB and that was a broken play. The new guy was a Cook, and he only caught me after 30yds and I was slowing up. Like I said, it was practice and he was a punk for having nails that long! FAST as all get out though! Hahahaha. I can laugh about it now, but that hurt like heck and starched collars (Army remember) didn't help!
Actually, if we woulda played against each other I woulda had to do what Burt Reynolds did in the Longest Yard on you to slow you down. Can you say "95mph Cup Check?" I knew that you could. lffng$ I know the game has gotten watered down, but that play has been banned, named "The Roy Williams Horsecollar" and he still does it. Find another way to get the man down - a QB even! - or better yet, tell the coach to take you off a magnet and put you on a fast TTC so you can be in front of the play next time!!! rtfl$ Here's the NEW Miniature Football Rule whenever someone's Roy Williams tackles your guy from behind - especially your QB!!! Shake The Box twice! Yep, you get an extra chance to get a Flag on that fairy!!! <<<< ------ bait on the hook! mgngcrz |
rjackson,
I agree somewhat with yoou that the game has become a little soft but with the sixe and speed of the players today you have to have rules against these kind of hits. I can remember in the 70's the Raiders main objective on defense was to send the starting quarterback off the field on a stretcher. With todays salaries and popularity you have to protect players. This is their livelyhood and for it to be taken away by an illegle hit would be unjust. The league also needs to ban cut blocking. That is the dirtiest play in football. |
All points are good but....
....Today players are wearing the tightest jersey's they have available and they are taping the jerseys to their pads. Now McNabb is a linebacker happening to be playing QB. Roy Williams is actually 5'11 much smaller then Mac, so he did what he had to do to pull this man down. If they ban the tight ********** jerseys and go back to the jerseys being able to stretch then you won't have the horse collars.
Jimbo I didn't know you cared for me in that way!!!! |
True Dat
...but don't they look so pretty? :D
|
Roy Williams
Guys,
I agree! Football has become soft in the past few years with all the rule changes, but I hate that guy "Roy Williams". I've said it to many of my friends, "He's a dirty ball player." Did you see what he did to Rod Smith of the Broncos in a Pro Bowl game 2 years ago? Totally uncalled for! He's a dirty player! Period! Smitty |
I'm'm A Die Hard Cowboy Fan Of Almost 30 Years And...
ROY WILLIAMS IS A DISGRACE TO THE COWBOYS NATION AND THE DALLAS COWBOYS ORGANIZATION!!!!!!It's Bad Enough He's Been Getting Burned All Season, With Wr's Within 1 Yard Of Him ( Something That Barely Ever Happen To Darren Woodson), And Then To Be Still Committing A Penalty That Was Named After Him. There Was Never A Penalty Causing Cliff Harris Tackle, Or Charlie Waters And Michael Downs. He Is a Professional Football player On One Of The Greatest Franchises In Sports History, And He Needs To Start Acting Like It. The Cowoys Should Fine Him Every Time He Gets That Penalty, And Should Be Told That His Job Is In Questioning Every Time He Commits That Penalty. Because Trust Me Cowboy's Legendary Coach Tom Landry Would Have Never Tolerated That Kind Of Behavior Or Performance, Trust Me. Thank You For Bring Up A Subject That Has Burning Me Up All Season Long.
And By The Way, Another Cowboy Player That's Wasting Cowboy Fans Time Is The No Tackle Breaking Julius Jones. He's A Disgrace To The Long Running Back Legacy Of The Dallas Cowboys ( Duane Thomas, Calvin Hill, Walt Garrison, Robert Newhouse, Tony Dorsett, Ron Springs, Hershel Walker, Emmitt Smith). A Cowboy Or Any Rb Should Never Go Down On First Contact And Be Brought Down By One Defender. Marion Barber Should Be The Starting Rb, He Deserves It And Earned It A Long Time Ago. Thx Again Doomsday78 |
Doomsday78,
Marion Barber is one of the toughest RB in the league. He should be the starter. The NFL has a way of being a copy cat league. As soon as one team starts doing something the rest follow. Hence a two back system. In my opinion the Cowboys would be better off starting Barber. He can block, catch and RUN! He is a three down back. |
Now that he is suspended my friend can get in the game and do some big things on defense!!!
|
My two cents on the subject
I have been a die-hard Cowboys fan all my life, but first and formost, I am a fan of the NFL and I do not like what I see.
First, we are going to change the logo of the NFL shield...BIG MISTAKE. Second, celebrations are no longer allowed...again...BIG MISTAKE. Third, the rules protect the quarterbacks way to much...BIG MISTAKE. Fourth, the rules handicapp the defenses so much it is no longer fair. Horse collar tackles used to be taught back when I played in high school. Anyway to get the guy down, short of a clothes line was acceptable...what next...you can't go low on a guy to tackle him? Fifth, in Roy Williams case, I have to agree with some of the other comments...he sucks! He can't tackle, he is slow on the blitz, he cannot cover even a tide end like Shockey and he makes very poor deceisions over all. It is time to put someone else in there and leave them in there. Let Pat Watkins develop, give him some time to play. He hits hard, he is fast and he does not give up on a play. Keith Davis is also another strong safety that is better than Williams. Perhaps some competition would make him play better... Finally, this is just for all my Cowboy fan brothers...so everyone else move on to the next post....I am starting a "support group" in the event the Cowboys fail to make the Superbowl...I swear, if we lose the first game in the playoffs I am liable to go jump off a bridge somewhere, however in my heart of hearts I still believe this is our year and that not only are we going to make the playoffs, but we will NOT be facing the Patriots...I repeat...the Patriots are playing bad football right now and I can see the Jaguars or Colts winning...so the Superbowl is still in our grasp...hopefully this loss will be a wake up call to the team. It is time for another seven game winning streak! GO COWBOYS! |
Football is a product
The NFL wants these guys to play for a while so they are doing what they can to tone it down a bit. With the kind of atheletes these guys are is very wasy to end someone playing days.Look at the qbs in the league it would be hard to replace D Mcnabb and its a better way to tackle then that!!lffng$

Hee, Hee, Haa, Haa Hey Silverhorse....
I See You, I Hear You, And I'M With You Bro.....yeah If You Know The Boys, You Should Have Known Somebody Was Going Catch Us Slipping, And It Has Always Been Them Dog On Eagles. Don't Forget They Ended Michael Irving And Moose Johnston Career. And Sunday's Was A Perfect Example With All The Injurys We Got, We're Going To Have To Really Cowboy Up, To Make It Through The Play-offs. But It Just Isn't Us Even The Pats Struggled Against The Jets, Losing Teams Always Play Harder At The End Of Their Seasons. They're Still Mad, Hungry And Very Emotional, And That Makes Them Dangerous. Hopefully That Sucker Punch We Got, Will Give Us Our Fight And Focus Back. You Know The Boys Always Need A Bad Game To Get Them Fired Up. And Even If We Don't Make It To The Big Show, A First Time Ever Record 12 -1 Is A Big Step In The Right Direction. Stay Encouraged Cowboys Nation, We're On Our Way To Glory Again.......stay Tune And Keep Your Popcorn Hot, Baby

RJackson
I agree with RJackson, when you are playing you better be "fully on" and looking to cream somebody. I want my men to tackle first then think later, not the other way around, too bad you can no longer play it like that, It's hard to play such an aggressive sport and then think about holding back or modifying your tackle at the last second.
Football has become a money game, these rules were put in place to protect every team's multi-million dollar investments. Back in the day when the best player was only getting a million or so a year the game was different. Now with team salaries, television rights, commercials, etc, etc...it's all about the money and their need to protect themselves financially. It's a shame it has taken a little of the rawness from the game in my opinion. My two cents... Shabby J |
I Agree w/RJ as well
I Agree w/RJ as well regarding the over reaction to Roy Williams tackle. I hate Dallas, but I think Roy Williams is a hard working hard hitting DB. He is made from the same mold as Dennis Thurman, Jack Tatum, & Ronnie Lott. Also, there was a hard hitting DB named Chuck Cecil who played for the Cards a few years back. He was pretty much fined and abolished from the league for his hard hits. The great Jim Brown once told me that the hardest hit he ever took was from Pat Fisher of the Washington Redskins, a 5 '7" 1??lb White Guy. I played DB, and would take you down by any means within the rules. If I had to bend the rules, then so be it. Never tried to hurt anybody purposely, but played hard to knock their asses out. Try being a DB defending on a sweep after fighting of a blocking WR with a pulling center, guards, tackles, and a lead back coming at you...I'm going to get any piece of the ball carrier that I can. Hey NFL...how about some football, not pus*y ball. Pats.. best of all-time yeah right..where is the competition?
GO DOLPHINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is what I have been saying about the NFL all along (BS, & Hype 4 Profit). They want to fine guys for big hits and such, but then turn around and sell them in the form of Crunch Course Football Follies (End Zone Celebrations included), & Hardest Hit DVDs. If this is not hypocrisy, then I don't know what is. As I said many times, the NFL is pretty unwatchable these days. The last two weeks, I opted to run errands rather than watch the garbage that was being shown on CBS, FOX, & NBC. Monday night football is awful as well. Don't even mention Thursday night football, those of you with out NFL Network aint missin nuthin. Believe that! |
Good Point Kotixblack
NFL= No fun league,Now a Female League!Go tell Dick Butkis,Deacon Jones,
LT(NYG) No More Hitting! Put a Pink dress on a QB who's as big as a linebacker!Better yet change Qb to pb for Panzy Back! Can you imagine having Jim Brown Running thru defenses with todays rule?He would have a field day! What happened to the National Football League? Erick |
Panzy Back ! Dang, that is too funny.
I agree with all you guys that say the NFL and thier rules are a big joke now. I played defensive end in the mold of LC Greenwood, Bubba Smith, Jack Reynolds, and other greats at that position. I even head-slapped a guy in high school for holding me (and took a penalty for it). I didn't tackle dirty, but I'd do whatever it took to bring a guy down, especially if he was bigger than me.
Williams should know better than tackle a qb like that, you can't hide anything in the NFL with so many cameras at the games. But they could relax some of the stupid rules to make for better games. Last time I looked, qbs wore pads and helmets too, therefore they should be fair game for big hits. Weirdwolf has a Panzyback on his Sumo team, I think his name is "Waxoff". One of my linebackers lit him up on a hit, and knocked him about ten yards behind the line of scrimmage.rtfl$ |
Think Out Side The Box
It is called evolution!!! Look guys have families and this is both a sport and a job. No more leather helmets. If you can understand that then stay on that path.
Football is a violent sport so we want to protect the players as much as possible so that they may play longer and we can enjoy seeing them play. Owner's want to protect there investmens " the player ". For many on this board have not played past high school, most have not played Semi Pro or Pro, so in that reguard it's hard to understand what you go through to keep you're self at top shape year end and year out. For a player to take a cheap shot at you and then hide behind " I was trying to make a tackle " is poor sportsmanship. I guess some of you think that what Mike Tyson did in the ring was cool  Bottom line it's sportsmanship, and respect for you'r fellow players. Every thing evolves in life, just look around you. Rules are put into place for a reason, to guide, control, and protect. When you know something is wrong and you do it any way then you get what is coming to you. You guys can try to justify all you want, but I bet you wont go out and break the law, knowing full well you're doing wrong, and if you get caught, what will you tell the judge ? Roy Williams broke a rule put into place to protect players, like face mask, clipping, chop block, crack back. You know if you take a chance and bend a rule and get cought you hurt not just you're self, but you're team mates, coaches, fans, and football as a hole. |
As Far As I Know ...and I Have Played Football Beyond High School And College ......everytime You Step Out Onto The Playing Field You Do So Knowing That There Is The Possibility Of Getting Hurt....possibly A Career Ending Injury...and In My Humble Opinion They Have Softened Up The Game Of Football And In Some Instances Brought Down The Quality Level Of Football Being Played In The N.f.l....but Yes There Are Rules In Place That Need To Be Followed..even If It Does Take Away From The Game That We Learned As Children And Played With Vigor And Tenacity Well Into Our Adulthood......
|
You know, I dont like Rugby but look at Rugby. They have no pads, nail each other, and you never hear a cry. The NFL is starting to get weak......I'm a huge Cowboys fan but Roy Williams is just an average player. So, he tackles anyway he can....ala, Ronnie Lott. He can't cover a t.u.r.d. though...
|
Well as far as...
...protecting an investment goes, that's BS, Roy was making a play in a close game and he did what he had to do to bring him down. Grabbing the shoulder pads from anywhere is part of the player so you do what you have to do. Yeah Roy Williams is getting exposed this year for his coverage ability, but let me say this none of you past ballers like myself could withstand a Roy Williams hit head on. Please remember he is a pro and he didn't get there Ballet Dancing. I am a die-hard fan of the boys, but none of you on this board today could suit up and go out and run man for man with any receiver in the game, so with all the hatred please stop. It kills me to see the fan CRITICIZE a PROFESSIONAL on what he is doing wrong and what he can and cannot do.
I get tired of the everyday man saying Roy is a average player, for goodness sake people he is a pro, none of you can withstand a pro training camp right now and probably not in your prime, if you could you would either have been in the league or would be telling us about it. Keep in mind I think Dallas needs to get Roy off the field on definite passing situations but I am not the GM nor the Coach so who am I to say he shouldn't be on the field. Back to the tackle shoulder pads are part of the offenive player and if Donovan gets hawked by slow ********** Roy he needed to get horse collared. |
Horse collar is a good rule
Its a good rule. Just like the facemask penalty rule is a good rule. Just like no chop blocking an engaged d-lineman is a good rule. Just like clipping is a good rule. These rules protect players from known occurances that have a high rate of major injury without taking away from the spirit of the game.
For Roy Williams the horse collar tackle is just instinctual, and now that its a penalty its like a bad habit. Doesn't mean he's a bad guy or a bad player. |
Hmmm.....
Fellas,
I don't know what Roy did, but back where I come from. We use to have a thing called, HIT 'EM HIGH! HIT 'EM LOW! The BoneCrusher and the (Ghee-A-Teen). We never wanted to kill anyone, but we should did practice bussing a chomp-up! |
ME vs. ROY
I must say I've seen him crush a guy or two dozen, but if he blitzed thru my O-line and I was assigned to kill the blitzer, he'd be on his arse more than I'd be on mine. Even right now today I'd jack that fool in the air 9 outta 10 times! Blocking downfield? He's toast! Me running up the gut - FB Smash - if I get past the LBs and he's the last man, he's gonna get some size 12 Air Sharks all up and down his chest!!! They'd name a penalty after me - The Jimi-Jam Tap Danced on Roy's Chest Foul!!! rtfl$ lffng$
Since that won't happen, let's do this. I'll make a mini-Jimbo FB pose (3.6 grams) and you make a Roy Williams-Rowland pose (3.2 grams) and we'll just play Smash 'em Up and Crash "em Up Derby next time we meet, ok? thmbsp$ ppls$ rtfl$ |
Nfl Network
On the NFL Network they talked to T O about Roy Williams tackle, and another one of there team mates.
When they name a rule is named after you, you might want to think twice about how you tackle. His own team mates hint at the fact that Roy is wrong. It's about keeping the players safe in a violent sport, and to reduce the chance and risk of serious injury. Many of the one's who read this post wouldn't say what they say if they were the one's hurt by such a tackle. |
Never said Roy was right...
Never said that Roy was right, only that if that was the only way to get the player down (not trying to cause injury), so be it. Rather a 15yd penalty, than give up a TD. Don't want to loose the aggressiveness of the game. I don't want to see any NFLer, or pro athlete get injured due to a dirty play. I want to see TO get lit up when coming across the middle, but it is not likely to happen with todays rules barring DB's from aggressive play.

I had my foot fractured on a horse collar tackle in high school. It's illegal and he did it anyway. A person's body is put in jeopardy when the rules of the game are not enforced. Let's not forget that these players are real people and they feel pain.
The fine and the suspension are fully justified. Someone said something about dresses on QBs. QBs are looking downfield to throw a pass and are blind to the pursuit. They can't defend themselves. The guys that are hitting these QBs outweight them by like 100 lbs in some cases. Running with a full head of steam. As for horsecollar tackles, they are really bad for the foot, ankle, and knees. You can't tee off on kickers and quarterbacks man! Again, players bodies are in jeopardy and should be protected as much as possible. |
As A Former Semi Pro Football Player
I Say If You Cant Stand The Heat Stay Out Of The Kitchen.....and I played Qb....and Guys Outweighed Me.....what Is Wrong With Our Athletes Today....i Took Some Good Shots And Here I Stand Today....i Was Not A Benchwarmer I Actually Played Qb @ 5'11" And 170lbs And Took Shots From Guys Alot Heavier Than Me....you Know What I Stepped On That Field Knowing That Anything Is Possible And When I Became Aware Of The Action Going On Around Me And The Pressure From The Defense Instead Of Where My Receivers Were I Stopped Playing The Game Because I Saw This As A Weakness...but Thats Just Me...i'm Not Claiming To Be The Toughest Football Player Ever But Come On Guys.....last I Checked Football Is A contact Sport
Peace |
Football still is...
not only a contact sport - and at the NFL level - a major COLLISION SPORT. If you play you at any level you have to be prepared. I gave and received plenty of good hits. But just like spearing is outlawed for good reason - so too should any action that is known to be clearly dangerous or possibly career or even life threatening to the hittee or the one delivering the hit.
