Greatest Quarterback of All time

In the aftermath of Brett Favre retiring, the big question has been who is the greatest QB of all time?

My top 5 would be:
Joe Montana
Brett Favre
Johnny U
Terry Bradshaw (also most underated)
Bart Starr

ram29jackson 03-04-2008 07:51 PM

there is no greatest QB of all time.
But Favres history at the position, spans a larger spectrum then most of the rest of them.
pure nimbers wise, he is a definite topper.

Tomkat 03-04-2008 07:52 PM

.

Dan Marino - never had a running game or defense to win Superbowl
Joe Montana, Brett Favre, too many others to make a 4 and 5

daghstrydr 03-04-2008 07:53 PM

Man without a doubt Dan the Man, even though he didnt win the big one, records are being broken because of him.:chr:

Reginald Rutledge 03-04-2008 07:57 PM

None Greater than...

Johnny Unitas. I only got to see him in the 70's and by that time, he was shell of himself.

Unitas is why the NFL is on your broadcast TV today. Without his heroics, the NFL would not be what it is.

Drafted in the 27th round, this Pennsylvania native was the NFL calling card for 3 decades.

He once held every major record in the game. With the 16 game schedule coming into play, much of his stats were overtaken by other outstanding QBs. But for shear excitement and a will to win, there is none other than the man in the black high top cleats.

In my opinion, Tom Brady doesnt even come close.
Sure, he has alot of numbers, but he has done it in a watered down free agency parity era where teams are lacking in long term practiced cohesiveness.I am not saying he isnt exceptional/good. He just happens to be in the right system at the right time - much like Aikman.

daghstrydr 03-04-2008 08:25 PM

Whats wrong with that, its not his fault that he is with a great team even though I am a dolphin fan true and blue, got to give the man his deserved credit.

sweetka 03-04-2008 08:30 PM

Without a doubt

1. Tom Brady
2. Johnny Unitas
3. Joe "Big Sky" Montana
4. Brett Farve
5. Roger Staubach

Dan Marino didn't have a running game because they were throwing too much. Eventually that's all they drafted for.

John Elway is probably more talented than all of my top five. He just screwed up in too many big games to put him ahead of those guys.

Norm Van Brocklin was a beast, as was Y.A. Tittle. Joe had a gun attached to his arm but I'll take any of those guys over him.

Bart Starr should be near the top five. Just my thoughts.

Top guns

I agree that there is no top QB of all time BUT my top 5 are:

Joe Montana: 4-0 in Super Bowls. QB of the 80's
Terry Bradshaw: 4-0 in Super Bowls. QB of the 70's
Tom Brady: 3-1 in Super Bowls
Roger Staubach: A winner. Would be QB of the 70's if not for Bradshaw
John Elway: More come back wins then anybody. Carried team for many years.

Let the debate continue...

Coach_J 03-04-2008 09:20 PM

This is a nice debate so here are my top 5.

1) Johnny Unitas: Like Reg said Johnny U. pretty much is why we have stations like The NFL Network.
2) Joe Montana: Won 4 Super Bowls, 3 Super Bowl MVP's, and never threw an interception.

Now it gets tough.
3) John Elway: The last minute comeback king.
4) Brett Favre: Holds many of the passing records.
5) Bart Starr: Can't argue with 5 Championship Rings.

Shabby J 03-04-2008 10:47 PM

The greatest of all time, Dan Fouts!

Chargers Baby!!!!!

Tom Brady

No way he can even be considered, in college he was bringing drew henson water, (Henson was a underclassmen) if henson picked football instead of baseball, you cats would be talking about him, he was a god, perfect size and power, with the mindset to play without allstars around him, sure brady has rings, thats awesome, but when picking the best alltime, you can't go by rings, I would take marino over brady anyday, Marino on the patriots, WOWWWWWWWWWWWW, 10 rings easy.

Not in order

1. Marino
2. Unitas
3. Starr
4. Staubach
5. Elway
6. favre
7. Montana

Tomkat 03-05-2008 12:15 AM

Too much emphasis is put on championships. Winning a championship is done as a team. Brady is a better quarterback than Eli Manning, but the Giants won. Can't win a ring without a complete team. Marino didn't have the support that Brady, Favre, Montana had. Brady hasn't played long enough to even be considered. Remember, Brady is playing in an era where the defense can't be within 5 yards of the receiver or it's a penalty, or the receiver can knock the defender to the turf then catch the pass. Brady has had a few good years, but what if he sucks the next few? Is he still gonna be on the list? Just my 2 cents, or am I overvalueing my opinion?

In no order....

Bradshaw
Montana
Staubach

Fouts and Favre would tie for 11 and 12

I like the debate

While all the championship rings go bling-bling down the street, the greatest QB debate rages on.....

You cannot just look at the NFL QB from what you have seen in your lifetime, but sometimes you have to reach back to understand where you are.

My top 10 is more about overall QB play.......not just overall numbers

1 Johnny U.
2. Favre
3 Montana
4 Bradshaw
5 Sammy Baugh
6 Elway
7 Marino
8 Starr
9 Fouts
10 Staubach

ram29jackson 03-05-2008 04:34 PM

thats a little more realistic.
like I said, there is no so called greatest ever. theres a - greatest for their era or for every 10 year period .
For now Favre does hold top QB type status.
He owns most if not all records of his peers.
Elway got 2 SB wins and last minute wins but Favre still surpassed his stats as well as Marino's.

Favre was around when there was a larger group of better QBs.
Favre-Aikman-Young-Montana was finishing up- Elway- Marino- Kelly and Im sure I missed some-
recently- if it wasnt for Archie and his wife this next 10 years would be berift of quality QBs. The Mannings and Brady are about it right now.

Crusader 03-05-2008 06:54 PM

Unitas
Montana

The Rest (in No Particular Order): Elway, Bradshaw, Dawson, Favre
Stabler, Marino, P Manning, Brady, Staubach, Baugh, Tittle, Tarkenton

5. Peyton Manning-Game control

Greatest QB of all time

I am a lifelong Packer fan, but Favre doesn't make my top 5. I have him 6 or 7.

To me, Brett Favre is the "Arnold Palmer" of the NFL. Fans love him, relate to him, and like his hard charging style. Jack Nicklaus was a better golfer and made better decisions than Arnie. Jack's meticulous style helped him win more majors (the key tournaments) but was not more beloved than Arnie.

Personally, Favre's performance in big games was sporatic at best. The best players have their biggest games (Jordan, Bird, Magic, Tiger, etc) on the grandest stages. That wasn't Favre.

1. Joe Montana (calm and cool...no interceptions in 4 Super Bowls)
2. Tom Brady (incredibly calm, throws an absolutely beautiful football)
3. Johnny Unitas (I have limited footage, but he revolutionized the position)
4. John Elway (the complete package)
5. Peyton Manning (definitely one of the smartest QB's ever...a bit too jumpy at times and the big game knock)

6-10...Otto Graham, Favre, Marino, Starr, Staubach

FrustratedFinFan 03-06-2008 08:28 PM

1) Dan Marino.....an awesome QB playing with no "D" or running game to back
him up. Even his receivers tended to be 2nd tier. Clayton and Duper were
good, but I doubt they would have been as stellar without Dan Marino.

2) Joe Montana.....intangibles off the chart. Probably one of the last great field
generals. Incredible production despite not having all the God-given physical
gifts.

3) Johnny Unitas....the greatest field general ever....and man could he throw!

4) John Elway....awesome physical skills and drive.....clutch performer.

5) Brett Favre...again, awesome physical skills/gifts...will to win off the charts!

dallcow4life28 03-07-2008 06:32 AM

Favre most over-rated

How can you be the best of all-time when you've thrown the most interceptions of all-time? Think of how many ridiculous picks he threw in ridiculous situations. He's not even in the top 15 as far as I'm concerned. So many of us seem to forget how great Staubach, Fouts, Bradshaw, etc. were. Let those QB's of the 70's throw the ball as much as these guys today, and Favre would be nowhere near Staubach.

My top 5

Staubach
Montana
Marino
Fouts
Bradshaw

ram29jackson 03-07-2008 04:05 PM

when you play 17 years and take chances, your going to have alot of interceptions. one of the the reasons is, in the eras before him, they didnt throw that much in the first place.
the fact is he leads in basically every catagory because of time in the game and his great escape-ability. the Packers have won more games than any other team under his arm= at least that stat was true as far as I know within the last three years.
he leads all QBs in all catagories in life time stats.
that makes him no less than top 5 for at least a 100 year window
