Solitare Coaches, please help

I will be starting my College Solitare league in a couple weeks, then after, I will have a base draft for everyone in the MFCA, I will pull 20 names out of a hat to determain who picks 1st and so on, there will be 20 draft picks.

My question is, how can I take myself out of the game and leave it up to the bases as much as possible, each game will be 1 hour for sure, can you guys give me some different ways to play this so I can choose, I know I will be using the sticks for passing, what are some ways to pick plays for offense and defense ?

P.S. This 1st season will be played with 6 teams, eveybody plays everybody once, it will be a 5 game season, next season I will add more teams, I need some suggestions on different ways to play this guys, please email me some rules to the way you play so I can pick from them, thanks.

1 more question

Should I pull the top 20 picks, or let the coaches pick who they want ?

Numbering System

What’s up Norbert,

Create a series of plays that include running and passing the ball. Do the same for defense. Set a number for each play. Put the numbers in a box or a bag that you cannot see through or in. Do one for defense and one for offense. Pull a number from the box. That number will determine what play you will use. If you don’t want to pull numbers, use dice or number flash cards.

Excellent idea, I can design 6 plays for offense and 6 for defense, roll 1 dice once for each and go for it, simple and fast , thanks Maurice, I think I will have 3 run and 3 pass plays for offense, and the defense will be pretty simple also, thanks my man.

Play-Action

Nor-bear: When it comes to solitaire rules, I have two approaches. First, use the rule-set of an up coming MF event in a short solitaire season just to acclimate to the rules and to see what is possible with my team. Second, when just playing to relax and to keep the game in the hands of the players and bases I like to use the sticks on pass plays and I like to use play action on every offensive play. In other words I do not call run or pass before the snap but rather after the first stop. After the first snap I survey the field to see what is available, if there is a convenient hand-off/pitch within two base lengths of the QB that may be my play. If there is shovel pass within the constraints of the rules or longer pass using sticks that may be the play call. Obviously, the longer you have the board on determines the types of options available to you. There is only one board stop and this is where you make your decision to pass, run, QB keeper etc. On defense I use a standard D suitable for stopping ether the run or the pass. This method works for me and keeps the results in the hands of the players. Enjoy. Ray F.

Good one Ray

Mix the bases up so you don't know which base is which. Then pick randomly for each team. Tweak if needed. Just have basic formations. That way you stay consistent. the more simple you make it, the more consistet and fair you will be.

I have been using the same system as Electric Coach and it is working well for me. I recommend it also.

The Action Box

I charted Madden's Playbook a long time ago and use that even today. I use my LAEFL Action Box which has 2D20 (different colors) in one compartment; 2D6 (different colors) in another and a single D6 in the last.

The 2D20 determine the Offensive Formation and the Defensive Play. The single D6 determines the strength of the O-formation: left (odd) or right (even). For O, I use 20 different formations with 20 different plays each, most plays are the same just different formations. ;)

Defense, however, is based on the Offensive "package" i.e. they don't play a 4-3 if the Offense is in a 5WR!?! And I set the D in their play, rerolling if the play doesn't match the Down and Distance i.e. 3rd and 1, I'm not running a "Prevent!?!" Same for Offense, I'm not running Goalline if it's 1st and 10 from my own 20!?!

After Defense is "set", I'll reroll for the Offensive Play and run it just like it's drawn up. Not only does this keep both sides fair, but it allows me to see what REAL LIFE plays work in miniature!

How should I do this

I will be holding a base draft for the MFCA members after my college season, my question is, should I pull the top 20 players for you to draft, or should I let the coaches pick who they want ?.

P.S. I will be pulling 20 names out of a hat to find out which coach picks when.

Pull The Bases

Norbert,

You should set out the bases that you want to be available. If you allow coaches to determine what they want, the draft process could get out of hand. From that, coaches will either address their needs or take the best player available.

Thats the way I will do it Maurice, thanks buddy, I will pull the top 20 players and list them 1-20 and let the coaches pick from them, Mozeek, the draft is for all the MFCA members.

P.S. I will keep you cats undated with youtube, pics and wirte-ups on games and players.

College draft teams are done

Arizona, Ohio State, Auburn and Clemson now joins LSU and USC in the College Solitare Draft league, season will start in roughly 1 month and the draft will be 1 week after the championship game.

P.S. Shown are all the DB's, WR's and RB's, all 48 bases were tweaked today, I will go over them once more and fine tune them.

sounds interesting and I too am a card carring member

put me in the bunch for a base draft....

..... as for you solitatire league - if you still have one, use your divider to setup your plays and use the cards/dice list of plays that each team uses and setup according to the results.

or you can have each team has 6 different plays/formations (each team has 1 special play) so that none of them will be running the play all day.

Sometimes a team will get caught with the wrong personnal package on the field, so use at least one random setup will get you at least one matchup problem.

What about clocks?

Norbert I had a league a long long time ago and my games were also an hour. I wanted to get the most bang for my buck so implemented set up clocks for offense and defense. I also used "reverse" set up and set up defense first(d-line and linbackers) so I didnt play right into the offense.

I also liked and used the dice system for plays. Each team had their own set of 6 plays. Sometimes 3 pass 3 run if they were balanced or mix it up with 2 run and 4 pass...create your team based on plays and style.

Set up clock:
My set up clock for offense and defense was 25 seconds. I liked it fast paced because i really didnt have time to think. Just do it and have fun and play.

1. roll die for defense formation. The spot of the ball was marked between hash mark so you know where center will be. set up your interior lineman and linebackers(7 men) based on formation...db's wait until offense is set. If Nickle or Dime set up 6 defensive men. You got 25 secs.

2. roll die for offense play. Set up all 11 men. 25 seconds

3. now set up the db's, zone(magnets) if you want for pass play.

4. If your defensive set calls for a blitz move that defender in place where you want.

I got a lot of plays in this way using 30 min halfs with 2 time outs each

Now you got me wanting to dig out my old stats from my 15 season league..pro and college with a college draft.....man that was fun back in the day.
