Running plays
I have decided to roll the dice for play calling in my solitare league.
I need some help picking 6 offensive plays. Any suggestions? Also, this is a pro team only league so no option plays. I am trying to make it quick. Here are is the defense: 1. 4-4 2. 3-4 3. nickel 4. dime 5. 5-2 6. 4-3 blitz Here is what I have so far for offensive plays. Left or right will be a flip of the coin. 1. Pro set pass (L/R)-pass 2. Strong I/ Weak I-run (I formation but fullback goes either side) 3. Trips-pass 4. I right/left-run 5. Shot gun-pass 6. Pro set right/left-run (backs are split) How does this sound? |
Sounds good. You may want to try a QB sprint option. The QB sprints (rolls out) either to the right or left. If a receiver comes open then throw the football. If a receiver doesn't come open then have the QB run. On defense you may also want a corner or safety blitz.

Copy away!
This idea goes back to my old strat o matic days. Dice roll to determine the type of play. It creates an element of chance to every play without any team having an advantage.
As a matter of fact I am going to get a play chart from strat o matic football and see if it works. I will let everyone know if it works or not. Chris |
Here is another idea for D
Run: Position your defenders to stop the run.
Balanced: Position your defenders in a neutral state so as not to favor guessing Run or Pass. Pass: Position your defenders to stop a pass. Linebacker Blitz : Position your defenders to stop a pass, and blitz one or more linebackers to try and sack the quarterback or otherwise disrupt the play. This will help stop short and long passes, but flat passes and runs will do well against this defense. Safety Blitz : Position your defenders to stop a pass, and blitz the free safety to try and sack the quarterback or otherwise disrupt the play. Safety blitzes bring great pressure on the quarterback, but if he is able to get the pass of then you might get burned long. All Out Blitz : Position your defenders in an all-out effort to sack the quarterback. This is a high-risk, high-reward strategy. |
It works
Well, I ran a test run of my new layout and it works like a champ.
Rolling two different colored dice for the O and one for the D. I have even put in fumbles and penalties. With a bit more work, I think it could be a great system for those who play solitare leagues. |
Sounds excellent...make sure you post your system when you have completed it...I would like to try it....Thank You

I Have A Question
what if its third and 16 and the dice roll comes up with run?
what if its third and 16 and the O dice roll is a pass, but the D dice roll is stop the run? Do you just run these plays as said, or is there some way to minimize the chances of these plays called? |
Plays
My thought is on a play like your suggesting, it is an obvious passing play. So I would pick a passing play.
But you just gave me an idea. I am going to come up with a card that you would roll the same dice for long yardage situations. O and D would have passing formations I am sure I can come up with 6 plays for that. Heck I might even do short yardage as well. |
Hey Chris...
...I've started working on a scheme similar to yours. I'll update you with my progress.

Have worked out something using dice. Will report soon. |
Update
Chris,
I've come up with a way that is similar to yours but instead of six sided dice I use 2 ten sided dice (each a different color) with one regular six sided dice. So when I roll the dice I roll all 3 at once. Here is how it works. I have 10 running plays, 10 passing plays, and 10 defensive formations. I roll the dice. The single 6 sided dice is the key. If it is an odd number it is a pass play. An even number means a run play. So if the offensive dice is a 4, the defensive dice a 2 and the regular dice a 5 then the play is for the 4th offensive pass play on my list. The defense sets up the 2nd defensive formation on my list. If it is an obvious run OR pass down (i.e. 4th and 1 or 3rd and 16 as Scott pointed out earlier) then I don't use the 6 sided dice. I just use only the pass or run play list. This allows for more plays than what was presented earlier with just the six sided dice with only 6 plays. You can get the 10 sided dice on the internet for less than a buck each. I got mine at Trollandtoad.com http://www.trollandtoad.com/Supplies...1204p1n10.html. You can also get them with more than 10 sides (20, 30, 40, etc.) if you want more plays. Still trying to fine tune it but it's fun so far. Will resume playing with it after I finish moving next week. Your thoughts? |
You are on the right track
I have done the same. I have two dice the the offense and one for the defense.
Now that I am not working.....I think I have more time to develop this concept. More to come. |
something i have been thinking about for a while
but have not developed yet.
RUBIX CUBE. Dont know how, but turning the cube and coming up with different colors representing different plays (O & D) plus penalties and fumbles is possible. every now and then it hits me, but then i find an unintended consequence. i have also (since this post back in may) warmed up to the dice. i throw that idea around (no pun:rtfl: :rtfl: ) also and still try to come with something there. so far, its along the lines of both you guys. lets check back at this posting and see what we come up with. i am going to give the 10 sided and multi dice idea a whirl.:rtfl: :rtfl: |

More input please!
