The Best method of "putting a hat on" or containing a Killer "looper" aka OLB?
Last year my looper courses were taken with Coach K-Lo and JeaseyMoney....I learned containment schemes. What are some other methods to be sure to put a hat on the OLB or multiple "loopers"?
Deep loopers? Loopers that attack from on the line? |
you must have forgot some of the concepts???
one way is to force the OLB/LOOPER to attack from a different position than he is trained for..... .... if it is a hard-charger that cuts down the line - force him to come from further away from the center by (a) add a TE to that side; (b) have your FB/RB kick out on that side..... or boot out to that side and toss a flair to the RB who faked the block.... |
Lateral moving offensive tackles are great, they make for some guess work on the defense. All you need to do is bump that looper off his path. You can keep power from LG-C-RG but make your tackles more finess players with the ITZ dials.
For more traditional TTCs on your tackles I've noticed that the double TE obviously makes it more difficult for the looper or even better yet on passing situations, run the 4 wide and have the RBs go right at the looper to chip block him while still maintaining the ability of the RB to chip block and get open. |
m.joe,
sometimes in the 4 wide set, you can run an overload from the defensive side of the ball where you end up with 2 blitzers from the same side (real 46-defense) so that one gets there before the Wr clears the wash...... |
Put the QB on a slow moving ITZ dial to get the QB out of the pocket and to keep the defense guessing. The stationary QB can be meat for multiple loopers on pure blitz downs!
|
Am I the only guy who feels that ITZ dials are to weak to be placed on offensive linemen? Have some of you coaches had success using them on the o-line in league/tournament play against equally talented coaches?

I received an education on those ITZ dial linemen last weekend here in Los Angeles. They aren't going to bulldoze you out of the way, but they finesse you out of the way. They use wide splits and lure you in or influence you out of gaps. They give the coach great flexibility in his play designs/calls. A conventional defense will not work against this kind of line.

These are finess bases for me, not power bases. Any team of mine will always have at least 2 lineman on lateral bases, especially to use as spot plays for the tackle positions. This is where backups become important, have 2 sets of tackles- power and finess.

I have perfected the rollout to eliminate the loopers.I will make my qb go left or right.I put him like he is running backwards and use a ttc and no one knows which way he goes.

Ok...
...back to the bat cave to hone my tweaking skills for ITZ bases.

loopers
ITZ's are great. Hard to tweak for consistency. I have found the best way to defeat a looper is first don't be afraid of it. The defense is tipping there hand and now you know where the pressure is going to come from. Run a screen to the loopers side. roll out away from him. Max protect with TE's and/or RB's. Don't try to take a looper head on with a blocker. loopers are tweaked to defeat these blocks. instead hit them in the side. you need to change thier trajectory. study thier tendency and exploit where you then know they will be.

That's what I do Chuck. I use that alignment for play action passing. |
A QB on an ITZ dial would also be sweet....just very unpredictable that way!! I have a QB on a fast old TTQB rookie base that I roll left or right to mess up loopers. Most are set to arc inside and the defense seems to have a hard time making adjustments. I like to roll to the side with multiple receivers. That causes a lot of headaches for the "D." You can also set your tackle to go backwards and outside to pick up loopers. It seems to confuse folks. Of course, that means a good inside blitz where the tackle was will be a problem!!

Widen them out
Take your Tackles or TE's and widen them out. Then you can set your dial or have a pre set lineman to spin and kick him out.You can also run plays to exploit their loopers.Counters, off tackle type plays after he runs himself out of the play--hope this helps--STT

loopers
roll the qb out and use the shotgun formation if your rules allow that set up!!!also run a back to that side that the looper is coming from their is now a big hole to that side!!
|
This defeinitely depends on rulesets
From the Shootout perspective, there are various ways to control the looper. In the Shootout system, the offense has 35 and the defense has 45. This allows for the anticipation of what a defense will do. After the 35/45, there is an additional 10 seconds for the offense and 5 for the defense.
In my formations, I run mostly wide splits because I believe in linemen who can block out laterally. By having the wide splits, you can neutralize the LBs because you can audible 3-to-1, which allows you to run right at the loopers, either one who is out of position. This is how big gains are busted open because it makes the defense have to account for the block out effect. This works best for teams who are able to pass the ball in the Shootout system. If you can not pass, some teams will play 7 or 8 across the line to impede any holes available. Just my take. Reg |
Screens.
Run screen plays to the side of their best looper/blitzer.Let all their DL go and get you Big boys between the lb/DB's and you rb or wr.You will have more than they do at the point of attack. Can be done in about any style of play--STT frstplc frstplc frstplc frstplc frstplc

Had an experience in the BAM SuperBowl where the coach was using an ITZ dial....
to kick my looper out further and off his arc/route, it was effective until i found a rythme. What I did was cover the itz tackle between the guard and tackle excellerating with a munroe boat, the speed of the kickout. I had the looper sitting directly behind the munroe...business as usual...sack!

Grandmaster KC,
Yep, that one got me for a little while as well, then what you can do is have your whole OL with ITZ dials move to one side, the QB on a dial roll to the side of the protection, and run a roll-out offense. This really works well...doesn't sound like it should, but it does. By moving sideways they turn the bases of the DL and and the QB has a long time to pass. Plus, loopers aren't as important because the QB isn't just sitting in one position. Mark |
ITZ Dialed QB
I have a QB on an ITZ dial, but after trial & error and several bases. I noticed the ITZ dial works best in an F5 base. It has room to turn and you can tweak it to move the way you want. Try it.

Actually, I have heard exactly the same thing. The reason is the prongs are more centrally located in a F5 base. I desperately need to pick up some of these F5 bases for my teams. I also understand there are some really good uses for them by themselves within the team concept. I have only held off because I am making bases (hopefully...if I can find a manufacturer that will work with the limited quantity I need) and didn't want to look like I was stealing anyone's ideas or something...same reason I haven't looked at that other company's new base.
Since I own them, and have ruined THOUSANDS of them without worry, I can tweak ITZ dials up to be pretty strong. Admittedly though, because of the limitations of the design (If you want them to go sideways, all the prongs have to be on one dial) they will probably not tweak to be as strong as a TTC base tweaked by one of the experts. So, if you want to use them, you have to be into stealth and time-spatial relationships (knowing if this base moves this way,and the opponent's moves this way, at this point in time this will happen). No lining up a stronger team and just killing your opponent, you have to outhink him! The plus to this is no matter how strong you are, odds are you will come across an opponent, a board, or a smarter coach who will neutralize your strength advantage. However, if you use stealth and you are smart with it, you will always have the advantage. Mark |
