When You Guy's Pass (What Do You Aim For?)
ALL YOU GREAT PASSERS OUT THERE
When you pass what do you aim for, the base, or the players torso ? which has a better success rate ? also, how far is your tilt over a lineman in your face ? do you angle the ball down or still leave it facing upwards for you angle / pic's please thanx mantaraydre |
there have been stuff on this before....do a search on passing and find a post by Wolf ....he even has pictures.....
however, to answer your question, when practice is at hand - try some of these concepts to help you get going........ 1 - start with just your TTQB and WR and place him ... 20yd from the QB start passing it to him (20-30 times) this will help you "read" your QB and you will find the "sweet spot" from there it's all down hill... 2 - next - add more receiver at various positions on the field (where they could end up after stopping the play) distances can be any distance throw to each the same number of times like step 1.....you should be feeling good about now...... 3 - add the o-line and repeat step 2 - this will be the first of the minor adjustments that will increase your skills.... 4 - add the D-line and repeat 5 - add defenders all over the place.... some close to the WR, some 5 yds in front, some 5 yds behind....use your imagination to position the defense - repeat step 2..... if you practice passing in this excerise, you will gain some of the skills you will need to have passing the ball.ppls$ ppls$ ppls$ |

I don't aim at anything.
Honestly. I don't. We use the passing target in the BMEFA (just in place of the receiver to throw to, we don't use the NHFL passing system). I take my quarterback, line it up behind the target, and move it straight back. If I've done everything correctly, it's only a matter of putting the QB at the right angle to get the ball there on time. Occasionally, I miss a shade left or right, but it doesn't happen very often. Saturday, having not thrown in a couple months, I missed my first two passes vs. Adrian, one just left low, the next just right low. In that game and the next, I didn't miss again. Take the thought out of it, and you will be one with the air attack, young Jedi. Roo |
I aim at the lights on the ceiling. The way I pass I stand just as good a shot of hitting the target aiming there as I do pointing it at the reciever. :D :D

Good question...
Dre! In the DFW our passers are highly skilled. Passing techniques become strategic and in some cases can be the difference between a player going out of bounds or taking it to the house.
The question was do we aim for the base or torso? If he is headed out of bounds and we want to turn him up field, we obviously aim for the base. If a defender is near and the base angle is cut off then the torso is obviously the better and safer option. In some cases when there is no angle our guys are skilled enough to hit the figure on the head. After a bit of practice it's easy to figure how far to tilt the QB. You begin to understand the distance and velocity you need to throw with after hours, days, months and years of practice. |
Since I throw more interceptions than completions, I learned to aim for the defender and hope my guy intercepts it. mgngcrz

I agree with ROOMORGANS , I really do not aim. I line up the throwing arm with the qb , and if I pull the throwing arm straight back I should hit the receiver. That is why I bought the tornado alley ttqb .
I would say I do try to throw towards the lower part of the figure where it meets the base. |
Although I'm not very skilled at passing I am for the upper torso/head area unless there is a situation of trying to turn him upfield at base level. This query though is really good because it helps me to understand what others to do and why. Thanks for putting that out there.

Its the G-FORCE TDQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :D :D ;) Andre, I wont try and repeat alot of whats already been said ( its great advice). Unless you have switched I believe you use the TDQ. In reference to your question about throwing with a lineman in your face. The TDQ is great at this IF you remember the tip sheet provided with the TDQ. Ball angle + ball placement + amount of force= Ball flight path. Just set up with a lineman as close as you can and then practice with the different ball angles and ball placements and take note of the flight path. If you do this you will arrive at combinations that will work no matter the distance the reciever is that you are throwing to. Trust me the TDQ can do this. Remember he can lob pass with accuracy if you use just the right TOUCH of force. Hope this helps. Geno H |

Aim
Depends on what's in front of me. I use one of the old white plastic QB's that has a lot of spring to it but it is a hair shorter.
If I have to pass over the line, I'll try to aim for the numbers. If I have a lane, then I'll aim for the base (more area to hit) as the speed of the pass / spring keeps it from skipping and is just a low line drive. Also, sometimes it depends on how the receiver is turned...if you have him at a profile, there's much less area to hit than if his back is facing you. I guess, basically, just look for the combination of: - Least chance of something bad happening (interception, batted at the line) - Most area to hit Then, as Roo says, just don't think from there...act!! The other key to good passing, I've found, is to treat it like a free throw. Do the same thing every time at the same speed. Make a routine. That way, when you're in pressure situations, all you're doing is putting it on autopilot and following a routine. |
Arms, Hands And Gut
I aim for the actual parts of the body that can catch a pass: hands, arms and belly-button. Oh yeah, sometimes the facemask. thmbsp$
|
I aim for the middle of the figure, unless I need to turn the figure a certain way then I will aim accordingly.
|
Every situation is different, I assess the intended reciever and coverage around him, ALL AROUND HIM, I then make a decision on the the best possible target area. Could be the base, the legs, the torso, the ARSE, etc...
If he needs to be turned with the force of a pass then that has a lot to do with the point of aim. I do keep my eye on the point of aim until the pass hits the target, like in golf keep your eye on the ball and follow through. |
