Question of the Day: Why is there a Resurgence of Solitaire Play

I just got through talking to 2 coaches who say they have now been inspired to play solitaire miniature football after spending several hours with me talking about the game. There are so many reasons, varying wide and far.

What do you think is causing a resurgence in some circles to play the game in solitaire. Granted, it's not a method of play that everyone enjoys but I know, for myself, it keeps me active in the game and gives me a chance to continue to play on a regular basis.

What's your appeal?

1. No travel
2. Few arguments ( somrtimes I fight with my self)
3. Did I say no travel
4. Childhood memories
5. Stay active in MF
6.Time( after you build the teams)
7. I think it is fun
8. Good way to get my son into action
9. No Travel
10.My rules
11. No schduleing problem
12.Play 10 plays if I want and go do whatever I want.

I will stop there.

For me . . .

Opportunites to relive some of my favorite games.

Continue to play, with no stress

That's it.

when I do play it...

... it's more about just playing without the extra drama ......

.... I get a chance to work on things that I can use the next time I play live...

... when I played with all 32 teams, I would do stats and stuff and look at the season in review and see if they avg out......

... of course the color and pagentery of the NFL.......

... all time teams for the most part, so still can have GREATS still running the field......

I have been glad to see a resurgence in solitaire play and discussion on these boards. It's interesting to me to see how Reg, The Rookie, dogwood30, RavennaAl, etc., have gone about creating their leagues and doing different things in terms of teams, styles, schedules, etc.

I enjoy having a solitaire league (two, actually, with more to come), for a variety of different reasons:

1) It helps me make use of all the teams, bases, etc., that I have accumulated over the years. My 14-team ECFA season all came from teams I had lying around, or ones that I painted up. Didn't spend a time buying teams or bases for the league. Same is true for the EPFA, as all four teams are squads I had previously used in leagues and/or tournaments.

2) I like being the commissioner. I like deciding on the schedule, the rules, the uniforms teams will be painted in, etc. If I want to change something on the fly, I can.

3) I may play long games, but I rarely play them all in one sitting. I like being able to play for X amount of time, and then move on and do something else.

4) I like sharing the results and discussing my two leagues on the web site. I like seeing people's reactions when Team A loses to Team B for whatever reason, or when a player goes off for a big game.

5) I like sitting down and mapping out the future of my leagues, in terms of what expansion teams will be added, how many will be added, and what other features of the game I want to eventually add (stadium, lights, video, scoreboard, bigger board, etc.).

6) Playing solitaire allows me to introduce various components from different styles of play into my league without having to convince anyone else in a league to do it, too. I've never played in a league that used The Box, yet I use a form of it for my solitaire leagues. I only played two seasons in the NHFL, yet I use defensive formations requiring the D-Line, linebackers, and safeties to be specific distances apart when lining up. I might add the CBSMF scramble rule for the next week of play, haven't decided on that yet. I don't have a weight limit, and while I don't add weight to any figures, any and all figures are welcome. If I own them, they will be used.

7) Hopefully someone sees the fun I'm having with it and decides to start a solo league of their own, and then posts about it here. That's a victory.

Another thing I thought of - and this relates very much to the project that dogwood30 has been working on.

He has created his own football history. He's about to play his 50th Super Bowl. Think about that! He has decades of memories now of games played, great players, great teams, close finishes, and now through the MFCA message board, he's been able to share that with all of us and we hang on every new result and set of photos that he posts.

I'm hoping to create similar with my projects. I won't get 50 seasons done, but I hope to create a nice history of football - my own history - as it goes along.

I think that probably says it best for me. Creating my own history. Especially now with my Canadian Rules / CFL Solitaire League.
