Base Satisfaction
Mantaray,
You have a loaded question. As a result, I will answer question #4, which asks, “What must you see to be satisfied with a base?” I am satisfied when a base shows me a balance of speed and strength. It doesn’t have to be extremely fast or super strong. If they are, that’s fine because they can be used in other positions such as kick returner if the base is really fast. If it’s really strong, it will be a defensive tackle for me. I will allow others to chime in and answer the other questions that you have. Maurice The Electric Coach |
Base question...
If it gets it's designed task completed....it is tweaked to the satisfaction of that specific purpose. It is even a greater joy when it runs the route or covers a hole..etc as designed...not perfectly for we are in a game of uncertainty, but we can increase the possibilities for success by knowing the tendencies of our bases.......consistant certainties...

i am with you dre
ppls$ almost the exact questions i have had over the past week as i get ready for Buzzball and the SeaWall.
i hope this thread gets many responses because there are crucial answers to be given. thmbsp$ |
Good question...
Here is what I will say to that...
I have never been the best tweaker but what I look for fits my coaching philosphy. Defensively - I believe in power on the d-line and speed everywhere else. Offensively - I believe in finesse, creativity & purpose. To me it is important that every base have a purpose. If it doesn't serve a purpose how do you execute what you're after? Do you even know what you're after? Electric Football is a true game of chess. It is important to set your opponent up! Therefore, I never have the stronger nor do I have the fastest team however, my coaching philosophy allows me to be competitive. You may have a different approach. However, certain players on my team must take it the distance. You have to have home run hitters. I also have specialist for key down and distances. So it is up to you and how you approach the game. No base is a bad base unless it doesn't move. If you think its a bad base, I'm sure it fits in someone's coaching schemes! |
Guys, I think you need some bench mark athletes (figure+base) for strength and speed for starters. Also, how repeatable is the base, can you trust that saftey to run down the reciever or will he arc the wrong way. Does your WR seperate from smash mouth DBs at the line? Do you know how to play your corners so that they don't get beat at a high rate, in other words do they like to be straight up, inside leverage, etc. Can your O-line work in unison for wedge blocking and do they have versatility to create holes in any location along the line? Do you got speed rush from the outside, can your looper become a presence?
I'm certainly not a battle tested coach per say, but I would answer your questions with these questions. Joe |
Answer To Question #3
Yes, a base can be over tweaked. Basically, when you tweak a base, you break the base down by reducing its structure in an effort to make it respond. The prongs or bristles on the base are stiff and thick. When that stiffness and thickness is reduced too much, the base is made weak to such a point it loses it structure. When that happens, the base will collapse under the weight of a figure. Sometimes the base will jerk around on the board when it is tested or it may not move at all. In most cases, the base is rendered useless.

Just right
Consistency, consistency, consitency.
With the possible exception of wideouts who you want sometimes to be a bit shaky, I want to be able to know exactly what the base is going to do and have it perform that way regardless of the board. As coach K-Lo says, "The #1 commandment in EF is 'Know Thy Men.'" I see too many coaches bring a base onto the tourney field that has been freshly tweaked and they really don't know how it will perform in relation to your other O-Linemen (do they move as a unit, etc) or how it runs to a stick. |
here are some possible answers to the questions

Hope this helps but as Mpls Tom said - you gotta know your players........ |
Dre,
I don’t know that much about the game but I’ll try to answer your questions 1) Does a base have to run end zone to end zone ? Not all bases need to run end zone to end zone. Kick/punt returners, gunners and DB’s, yes. All others it depends on what you are looking for the player to do. Are you really concerned with a lineman to have that ability? I think you have to look at each position to really determine the need. 2) what if the base runs 70 yards then turns, should you tweek some more or stop right there? If that player can run the same pattern over and over, I would leave it alone. 3) at what point is over tweeking determined ? You will know it, when it happens to you. 4)what must you see to be satisfied with a base ? When it consistently performs what I’m looking for it to do. 5)if a base seems pretty fast, would you try to make it faster or quit while your ahead ? See my answer to number 3 6) how do you measure the strength of a base when your not playing against another coach who has a strong team ? I would suggest that you buy a few bases from some of the cats on this site that build a strong base and use them to judge what you have. 7) CAN A BLOCKING SLED BE MADE TO PERFECTION FOR YOUR STRONG BASES TO BE TESTED AGAINST. if a sled can be made, how much should it weigh so you can see if your players are strong enouh to push it / I don’t see a need for a blocking sled. I think it is more important to see how your line works against an opponent. 8) can a blocking sled be made for an entire line, how much should that weigh See my answer to number 7 9) how fast should a receiver be ? A receiver should be judged on it’s ability to get open first. Speed second. 10) how fast should a linebacker be ? It depends on the defense you run. To me they are the difference makers. I usually have a mix of speed and power and multiple LB’s. 11) should you db's be super fast to track down wr's Yes! I hope this helps? |
