League/Tournament rosters

Just curious-
The NFL has 40 man teams. Why in most leagues/tournaments are we limited to 33??
Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just don't know.

The nfl has 53 man roster teams, ............as for the limit,..... At BuzzFest 33 is enough to keep track of and inspect, and certainly enough to field a team. ;)
