You're perfectly right
It's good "regiment" painting IMHO : it's an old wargamer tip, when you paint complete armies : the overall aspect become more important than the individuals.
Seeing the pictures, and the fact you painted all that teams, made the gift really priceless.
I can say you made a really cool late christmas gift to a father and his son
