GAME RECAP - FLORIDA vs. TEXAS

FIRST QUARTER

Ugly stuff early, as Texas throws a pick after a 50-yard completion to Goodwin, Florida fumbles, then both teams punt twice. But with 3:10 left, Florida's defense snatches the early momentum, as Jones intercepted a Gilbert pass and took it 25 yards to the house. Texas' next drive sputtered as the quarter ended. FLORIDA 7, TEXAS 0.

SECOND QUARTER

With its defense hammering Texas, the Gators gambled on 4th-and-10 from the Longhorns 44, but Brantley's pass was incomplete. Following a Texas punt, the Gators drove 52 yards in 10 plays, but had to settle for a 40-yard field goal. A solid Hill punt return (18 yards) set Florida up at the Texas 40, and a 9-play drive ensued, culminated by a 9-yard pass from Brantley to his running back Demps - who messed with Texas all game long. FLORIDA 17, TEXAS 0.

THIRD QUARTER

Florida appeared ready to put the game away, starting the half by going 67 yards on 10 plays. But the 11th play was a pick, with A. Williams intercepting for the Longhorns. They couldn't capitalize though, largely due to Gilbert being sacked by Black on 3rd-and-12. After a short punt, Demps broke right, cut left, sped toward the end zone, and flipped over the speed control nozzle to celebrate his 46-yard touchdown run! After another Brantley pick, Texas finally woke up, as running back Johnson caught a 31-yard pass, then finally found positive yardage in the running game, breaking a 24-yard scamper to the Florida 20. Goodwin caught a touchdown pass and a 2-point pass. FLORIDA 24, TEXAS 8.

FOURTH QUARTER

Gilbert found some open targets in the final period, but the Longhorn running game was bankrupted nearly throughout. With no holes to run through, and not much talent at tailback, Texas couldn't sustain any drives. Florida relied on Demps right, middle, and left to run the clock, and set up a pair of field goals. The Longhorns desperately tried to march in the final 2:04, and were helped by a pair of Gators penalties, but the game ended fittingly, with Johnson stuffed for a 5-yard loss on a sweep.

FINAL SCORE: FLORIDA 30, TEXAS 8.

Florida is 1-0 (0-0 East). Texas is 0-1 (0-0 West).

I shot video of the Demps touchdown run - have to see if I can get that posted.

Stats to follow in the next post.

Next game: MICHIGAN vs. KENTUCKY
