I agree the time factor is a huge obstacle and really need an understanding better half.
Performance, not the look of players or custom team is certainly a stumbling block. Guys don't want to show up and get blown out or look "stupid".
Pride is a huge stumbling block in many things in our lives. Understanding and being able to handle that it is ok to stumble on your journey in the hobby is huge.
Perfect example, I got back into the hobby joining the CNYEFL 4 years ago after like 30 years away from the game. Painted up my team, did the decals, tweaked as well as I could...then went to the first play day and WON my opening game - but then proceeded to go 4-9 on the season

.
I was fortunate to be playing and hanging with great guys - especially JWoopie (John Wharton) who shared a lot of insight in the style of play. Also the play days were simply FUN and that kept me tweaking, studying and playing. The BAM and guys like Morgan, Wally, Joe, Karim ...have made this experience great as well.
-It has to be enjoyable - I coach "real" sports and that is pressure enough - this is my hobby and I enjoy all aspects of it - painting, tweaking, playing, videos, etc...the goal of having FUN regardless is huge and making the play days and events fun is the master key!
