LSU had four wide receivers in a tight diamond formation on one side of the field, so yes, one was right behind the other.

They also ran a formation on the next play with two tight ends, then two more right behind the tackles, a quarterback under center, and a single tailback.

It was very 1920s and it was beautiful.
