what al says is very true. painting in a wargaming style really requires a lot of detail from wrinkles in clothing, to muscle tone to faces. you need those "peaks and valleys" in the sculpts to be able to add shadows and highlites for a more dynamic paintjob. so far, the only stock figures that i have personally seen with enough detail to achieve these paintjobs are excalibur figures and dj's running back, and even the excalibur figures just barely have the detail. there are certain things that can be done to stock figures to give them a little extra flare, if this is what you are after. example, paint the mesh portions of the jersey a slightly darker tone than the rest of the jersey, or, if you are feeling brave, paint in the muscle tone on the arms and legs by using a darker version of your base color for the shadows and a lighter version of the same color for the highlites. i do this for all of my figures that i paint, i just don't feel like sculpting in all of that muscle tone. perhaps i can post something on the last 2 suggestions later showing some examples on how to add some depth in stock figures with the use of paint.
