ITZ dials in TTC shells are amazing Michael, they can be surprisingly fast and you are right, they do not give a hint as to what direction they are set to run.
I put the dial in the shell, but I do not completely remove the rear TTC prongs, I cut them so that they are a millimeter above the play surface. I find that it helps add stability to the base, as the ITZ dials prongs are more centrally located and the rear prongs act to keep the base from tipping back too far, wheelie bars if you will. If they make too much contact with the field it will hamper the bases ability to move laterally left and right.
I have tweaked this combo and played with different ways, but this is what works for me consistently.
