I am just wondering.... HOW THE CRAP DOES THE "AUTOMATIC TIMER" WORK?!?!

you know the little plastic gear deals that go on the board and sorta turn when the board is on... and are indecipherable!

I, like many I am sure, do not use them cause they take up like half of the end zone... but just wondering how they are supposed to work!
