COMMON LAWS
Regardless of ALL the chatter, there still should be 2 "common laws" when it comes to home fields: players aren't falling (home or away, doesn't matter) unless they're getting CRACKED and fast enough to cover KRs.
If I'm the visiting team, that's ALL I personally worry about. If my guys are running in quick sand and the home team is lickety-split, we have a problem that could most likely be fixed with a lil extra board time. That's why most NFL teams fly in a day early to run on the field they're playing on on Sunday! I think the NCAA does the same thing, unlike when I played semi-pro we hit a field that had 6-inch crabgrass and as soon as the sun went down, the "skeeters" were carrying players off the field and fans out of the bleachers!!! When I looked over to the home side of the field, they had spotlights and flamethrowers to keep their fans comfy!?!?!?! THAT'S HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE!!!
Anyway, the biggest recommendation I have when it comes to hfa's is that they should be voted on by the entire league. I think the GLEFL does this. All teams "field test" the proposed home fields and vote whether they ar worthy of gameplay, I believe.
In any case, the Away team's coach should line his KO team on one 30 and his KR team on the 50 and run a coupla KOs. Then he should either fix the bases that don't work; sub in some other players or run with what he's got i.e. the trainer didn't bring the right cleats! If you get caught with 22 players all on the same kind of base, you're prolly screwed on some fields. Suck it up and take it like a man. Be prepared next time.
However, if we just wanna play and see who's da man, then we should level the "field" as much as possible i.e. Tournaments.
In a league situation, rules for home fields should be in WRITING so that when the Playoffs start, there's NO misunderstandings. Break out ALL of the fields during a few pre-season rounds and everybody should test their guys on different fields so they know what they gotta prepare for. Sharing scouting reports plays a big part in regards to fields as much as evaluating the other team's superstars!!! BE PREPARED is what I always say.
Now if we're talking, Pledge vs. Windex to gain an advantage over the away tem, then I'm with RD...next!
