Obviously, more surface area to contact with will give better blocking leverage and make it much more difficult for the defense to penetrate.

It is an obvious offensive advantage which will only lead to wide base defensive players because I do not see how regular based defensive lineman will be able to shed blocks otherwise.

The only problem I see is that in most leagues, you will have to have some space between bases which will stretch the OL further across the field horizontally and give less room for WRs to work with.
