'Week 7" was a wild one as some teams continued their climb, and others continued their slide. Here's the results........
Fairies 52 - Zombies 49
The San Francisco Flaming Fairies outlasted the New Zealand Zombies, 52 -49, in a wild game that broke the WMLMF scoring record. In a bizarre twist, the Fairies, with the leagues worst rushing offense, ran for 5 touchdowns against the leagues #2 rushing defense.
Jerome Bettis scored the first 2 touchdowns, on runs of 80 and 52 yards to put New Zealand up 14-0. James Leach answered with a 23 yard TD run of his own to make the score 14 - 7 at the end of the first quarter.
Russ Francis scored his first points of the season with a 5 yard TD catch to make it 21-7 Zombies. Leach then returned the kickoff 90 yards for a score and it was 21-14. Johnny Holmes’ 45 yard TD run tied the score at 21 all. James Lofton’s 64 yard TD reception and Leach’s second TD run made it 28 all at halftime.
The defenses stepped it up in the third quarter and Leach’s 29 yard TD run had the Fairies on top, 35-28 going into the final quarter. Pat Medown kicked a 35 yard field goal made it 38 - 28. Billy “White Shoes†Johnson returned the kick for a TD, but Leach ran his kick back for his 2nd returnTD to make it 45 - 35 San Francisco. Holmes’ 2nd TD seemed to put the game out of reach at 52 - 35, but the Zombies rallied right back. Bettis scored on a 5 yard screen pass and recoverd the on-sides kick. Lofton then made his 2nd TD catch to pull the Zombies within 3, 52 - 49, but the Fairies covered the next on-sides attempt to close the game.
Leach ran for 109 yards and 3 TD’s and returned 2 kicks for scores to lead the Fairies. Bettis ran for 197 yards and 2 scores, while Dan Fouts and Bart Starr combined for 9-14-1, 224 yards and 4 TD’s. Cornelius Bennett had 6 ½ tackles for the Zombies, while Forrest Whittaker had 2 tackles and an interception for the Fairies.
