Midwest Mennonites 41 - Canadian Sasquatch 27
The ‘Bible Thumper’, Billy Bob Weisser was a perfect 8-8-0 for 195 yards and a TD, and the Mennonite defense came up with the greatest goal line stand in WMLMF history, stopping the leagues #1 and #2 rushers on a first and goal from the one inch line to win the battle of division leaders, 41-27. The game featured 7 different lead changes.
Bunyons put the ‘Quatch on the board first with a 49 yard field goal and a 3-0 lead. Brother Speedy Ezekiel returned the following kick 88 yards and a score to make it 7-3, Mennonites. Grog came right back and rambled 75 yards for a TD and a 10-7 lead. Steve Stucky hauled in a Weisser pass for a TD and the Amish were back in front, 14-10.
In the second quarter, Muckman took a short screen pass from Stinkwater and a 17-14 lead. The Amish marched back down the field, and Ezekiel’s 2 yard TD plunge made it 21-17 at halftime.
The second half started out as the Muckman/Grog show, and Muckmans TD run put the big guys back on top, 24-21. Once again, Speedy answered the call for the Amish and scored from 8 yards away and a 28-24 lead. On the next possesion, Grog fumbled the ball and Brian Brenneman scooped it up and ran 20 yards in for the score to increase the Mennonite lead, 35-24. Bunyons’ 2nd field goal of the day brought the Sasquatch back to within 8, 35-27. Luthar Lamp ran 55 yards for a score and a 41-27 lead going into the final quarter.
Stinkwater guided his team down the field, completing 3 passes in a row. His last pass was a 23 yarder to Theodore, but Bud ’The Beerman’ Weisser made a spectacular tackle at the one inch line. The Mennonite defense then stopped Grog and Muckman on 4 straight runs and took the ball over on downs at the Mennonite 3 yard line. Tight end Steve Austin made a crucial first down catch, and the Mennonite were able to run out the clock for the win.
Stinkwater completed 6-11-0 for 149 yards and a TD for the ‘Quatch. Lamp rushed for 96 yards on 9 carries and a TD for the Mennonites. Chappy led the Sasquatch defense with 4 tackles while Sam Smucker was tops for the Amish with 5 tackles.
