If you're time-limited on how long your games can run, sticks or other simulation methods offer a great advantage over the TTQB in that you either have a much quicker setup for the pass or don't require one since you've got your own simulation mechanics to handle the play.
In my case, with my own gameplay, I have a very basic mechanism: an open receiver must be in a direct line-of-sight with the quarterback. If that receiver is in the line, the pass is completed. If on the other hand the defensive player covering that receiver is in that line, the pass is intercepted and can be returned. If there isn't an available receiver in LOS, the pass is incomplete and the play busted for a five yard loss. I've had interceptions and incompletes in my games and I spend a grand total of six seconds looking for that available receiver and it's worked out well for my purposes.
