Althought the ink wash over a dark gray would work very well, I tend to paint the base coat black and then make the highlights a toned black, adding a touch of what ever color I want the light to be.

I usually paint them in with a 20/0 brush, especially on figures with alot of detail. I have found that a small amount of an orange/brown added to the black makes it look like sun is shinning on them, or a blue/gray for a cooler or neutral light. I just paint the tops of the shoulder pads and any wrinkles.

I am actually currently working on a team with black jerseys, and I will post a picture once I get one done.
