My two cents....
Wow...that is pretty deep. I guess it depends on the coach. Many folks here in Indiana look at Dungy as a failure as a coach. Many believe the Colts should have had 3-4 rings instead of one...and why do people say this...because he was too easy going and does not get in players faces enough. Let's face facts...what motivates today's players? Is it money...for some the answer is yes and for these players I believe a coach should get in a players face when they don't show up to play...Albert Haynesworth is a good example. What did they pay him... 52 million and what did they get in return...not what they paid for.
Now there are some players out there who play for the love of the game and for championships. To name a few...Brian Westbrook, Miles Austin, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning...about 80% of those who play the game. It is just too bad that 10-15% are there for the money these days. With it being a team sport...all a team needs is one kink in the armor and the team will lose. Look at the Cowboys...great example. Last year T.O. was so disruptive, that they just could not function. How refreshing it was to hear all the players talk about the TEAM effort and how the TEAM won the game this season. If I was head coach of a T.O. team, I would have got in his face every time he dropped the ball...to bad for Buffalo this year.
Players that snap...well it could happen and if it does, then I guess that player should be banned from the NFL and that goes for a coach who physically hits a player (Oakland Raiders coach), but as head coach I think they have the right to try and get the players attention any way they can (without violence).
Let me say this...I watch old footage of Vince Lombardi and he never just sat on the sidelines with his arms folded and not saying a word. Vince yelled at his players, grabbed them as they were coming off the field and gave them a tongue lashing when they deserved it. T.O. would have not lasted a day on his TEAM, and either would any of the current day spoiled, overpaid players of today....
And as for Parcells...he is one of the top 5 coaches of all time. Marvin Lewis will be lucky to keep his job...even keel or not...that man needs to get the most out of his players...he needs to show some emotion...it is a emotional game.
Those of us who have played the game know...when the coach gets in your face, it is time to bring your A game...it is not done enough in the NFL...
God bless, peace
