Laterals ??
First:
1.) Let me ask, is it OK to ask questions in the tailgate forum or should I be posting somewhere else? 2.) Let me apologize upfront as I will be asking a lot of "dumb" questions, no, I mean alot as I am trying to gain as much knowledge as I can. Thanks in advance. Ok, here is one: Speaking mostly solitaire here, however, I would really be curious how you manage this in league play as well. How do you "manage" laterals? As an example: QB, under center, "I" formation or split backs...you designate the upback as ball carrier, however, tail back looks like he would break it and he is behind the upback and LOS...can you say, OK, he's got it now by lateral and then as he gets down the field and is about to go out of bounds or is almost tackled he "laterals" back to another player who is behind him (within one base length)...k, now he's got it...I think you know where I'm going. Obviously, you don't see this often in the NFL or other leagues for that matter... My first thought is to limit each team to one lateral per game, "gimme" or otherwise... I'd like to get your opinions on this... Thanks, Joe |

Joe, from the perspective I play in...
lateral movement is a huge part in playing the game. When I here the word "limit", that really raises my eyebrows because I don't see football as a game of limits. I see it as a game of creativity and expression.
I play in the DFW, BAM, and CBSMF Leagues. The great thing about these leagues are that there are few if any limits to how the game suppose to be played. The thought is that you create teams in YOUR own image. Some people like straight ahead run teams/power teams. Some teams like linemen who are TTC bases which can do what they desire. I am probably most known for the zone blocking scheme in miniature football. I have perfected the lateral line play since 1998. I had these schemes for many years but as you get older, wiser, and more in tune with the game, you know there are so many things that can be done with the game. The lateral scheme is as beautiful of a scheme as it is in the game. A lot has to do with the rules as well but laterals allow you to open holes that were otherwise not thought to be possible. I do understand that everyone have their opinions but any league that I may ever have any interest in will never be one that restrict me in what my teams can do out on the field. If you saw my team in action, it would amaze you. A lot definitely has to do with the figures where the base + figure is the athlete. Having the right type of figures is oh so important in the effectiveness of zone blocking and lateral movement. Most times, guys want to restrict what you can do when they don't have an answer for stopping it. That's just an opinion I have formed from watching how rulesets have been developed and leagues play. Joe,
This is the way my nephews and I play. A lateral or pitch back is designated as a gadget play. A team is allowed two gadget plays per game. Our gadget plays are onside kicks, fake punts, fake field goals, reverses, running back option to run or pass. |

Whoops...maybe I wasn't clear
Reg,
Thanks for your reply, however, I was talking about lateraling the ball to a player behind the the "current" ball carrier. You know, like those plays at the end of a game?? He's got it, no, now he's got it...perhaps I should have said pitch in place of lateral... Thx, Joe |
