Changing Teams (painting)

I am in the process of changing players to different teams. Do you have to prime the teams before you switch the colors. The team in my signature used to be a throwback Tampa bay I won off ebay. They are turning out ok. I have more players whos paints are less compatible. Im curious to find out how the experts do it?

I am not an expert but I have painted over some figures and they look fine to me.

Thanx for the reply. Its not these vols that im worried about. Im changing some Jags to Steelers, Chargers to Vols and Steelers etc...

The answer depends on several factors. Are you using enamels or acrylics? Are you going from a dark color to a light color or white? How picky are you about the detail in the figures?

I've always painted with enamels and have painted over several teams with no problems. An example, if you are going to paint yellow over black, I would paint a coat of white first to get a better coverage so that the yellow is more vivid. I'm not so sure about acrylics as I've heard they can be a little on the thin side. You may be better off stripping the paint first for those.

Some guys automatically strip the paint off the figure before they paint, and that's ok too. The best method to strip is to soak the players in brake fluid for a few days and then wash and scrub with an old toothbrush to get rid of the paint. It can be kind of a pain if the old paint doesn't want to leave the figure.

If you want as much detail in the figure as far as shin pads, face features, fingers etc., then you should strip the old paint. If you don't care so much, then paint away. One advantage is that the extra layers of paint makes the figures look more 'beefy', as well as adding a slight amount of weight.

There was a thread on this subject at the Miggle board last year... or was it MFCA? In any case, one poster told how he used Kilz n.2 gloss white latex to simply paint over the figures in his teams to prep them for their new colour schemes.

I did a guys bears team.It was orange jersey team.He had alot of customs on his squad.He wanted white jersey and blue pants.That was first time I painted over a painted,decaled team.I just had to find the right white that would work.That team came out awesome.If most of them will be steelers you should be ok.
