Question of the Day: What's Stopping You?
More than 16 years ago, I created the DFW Miniature Football League. "Miniature" was a word I thought would be better served than "electric" back then. Only someone like K-Lo may remember the word and argument I faced behind "miniature".
Anyways, even with that one word, I had guys in the DFW who wanted to argue against that word. Miniature would encompass all facets of tabletop football in my eyes and my hope was that guys from the league would go out into their areas and begin new leagues. I saw the argument about growing the hobby. Gosh, I've got opinions on that but chose not to comment. One of the things I always wondered though was "what's stopping you?" from creating leagues in your own community? Is it that you get comfortable in just going out and playing in a league and feel there's no need to do a grassroot effort? Or is it that you only have time to play and not really put forth the effort to go to necessary venues to recruit others? I've had guys who would want to offer all the solutions in the world to the problems but would not get out in the forefront and tackle the problem head on. They would be quick to criticize but slow to volunteer. I try to look into the future. I try to stay two steps ahead of the game. As I get older, I hope I've gotten wiser. As I look into the MF landscape, I wonder how many of you are really willing to risk your time, money, and work to create leagues and generate excitement in the game? If someone came to you out of nowhere and asked you to put your best foot forward and recruit them, could you? I am not just saying show them a board and some boring rules but make an IMPRESSION (lasting) that make them want to go out and do that to someone else. Do you have the TOOLS to bring them into the game? What are you willing to sacrifice? I ask this simply because in order to grow the game, the WOW effect is so important. The sky is the limit but the sacrifices can be tremendous? You can't think selfishly in terms of your own self-interest but for the good of the game as a whole. Most can't get pass that. So what's stopping you from going out into your own communities and starting satellite leagues right now, today? Reg |
