Default Vaulnerabilities in a Defense

Vaulnerabilities in a Defense:

An over-aggressive defense is vaulnerable to trap running, angle blocking and draw plays.

A weak defensive front is vaulnerable to trap running, and zone (hat on hat) blocking. Against a weak front, you can lead more with your fullback as the D-line will not penetrate the O-line.

A slow defensive front is valnuerable to outside running, tosses, reverses, and sweeps. This is what the Saints would like to do with Reggie Bush. Get him to the outside. This is also why Emmitt Smith never ran outside, while Barry Sanders was forced to sprint for the sidelines. Less power upfront means more outside running and off tackle stuff, while strong lines simply knock people off the line and run up the middle.

Against a poor tackling defense, you may choose to isolate CBs and Safties by letting them run free at the running back thinking that they will miss a tackle, i.e., John Riggins against McNeil in the Super Bowl. Poor tackling is like having an extra blocker on the field.

Need visual proof? Watch this play on YouTube. A defender is actually allowed into the backfield to miss a tackle so that the more important players don't get penetration.

P.S. you cannot simulate this action with any touch tackling.

Default Yea Man

This is what I love, talk/chat about actual football subjects.

I just think all the talk/chat about tweaking bases, types of bases, TTQB passing is ok:rolleyes: but you lose the point and focus of football.

In my opinion if we want the respect of the people outside of this hobby then we should focus less on bases, and TTQB passing and focus more on the actual game off football.

After all this is a football community and we are coaches so shouldn't we be talking about football subjects? And not the name brand of the shoes that you're player has on?

Default Good Stuff

But wasn't that a FOB Tackle that Riggins just ran thru? I used to use a 6-sided die to see how many ABC tackles a guy could break, with 6 only coming up a few times a game. That was a perfect example of the RB NOT coming down on the 1st hit, even though it was from the front!

If you want to use a dice for breaking tackles it's fine. But remember you are simulating the action therefore a tackle must be broken regardless of how it's done.

Also remember that there are many different ways of playing but when talking in football terms, the language is universal. The more we talk football, the more we dispense with the discussion of styles and what works best.

Play the game the way you like best. What's most important is that all elements are provided for in some way and not overlooked.

Default That Was A Tackle!!!

Looked like a FOB tackle to me, but he got runnededed ovahhhhhh!!!! Can you imagine if we played Momentum/Forward Progress? Imagine if you had to make the tackle head-on from the front AND stop the RB's momentum? At least for the first 10-yds, thereafter ABC. THAT WOULD BE HOT!!!
