Default Linebacker Play " What Are Your Players Assignments" ?

Coaches,

lets discuss linebacker play for a moment. What are some of the assignments you task these men to do. First off, do you run a 3-4 or 4-3.

!) do you want your lb's strong without too much speed ?
2)do you want your lb's superfast and strong.
3) do you shuffle linebackers according to the offensive set ?
4)Are your linebackers positioned to get a hat on a rb/te ?
5) Are your lb's designed to drop into coverage ?

THERE ARE A MILLION SCENARIOS A LINEBACKER CAN BE PART OF, CAN I PLEASE HEAR SOME OF YOURS.

I heard minneapolis tom tell george diamond he likes to let his linebackers do their thing.

Has anybody ever run a 5-2

How many coaches just basically stack there linebackers for extra stregnth behing the defensive line.

Bottom line / are there specific assignments at your lb position or are they just extra muscle ?

good question...

Well, in my base 4-3 I play a pressure style that stops the run first. I usually have my front 4 strong enough where stacking is not needed by the LB's.

I setup based on the offensive formation. MLB or the MIKE is tough and quick. can get to the flats as fast as most RB can get there. fills the holes up inside and has great range in pass coverage. Usually mirrors the RB.

OLB - he can be on either side of the formation. Most of my teams will not switch from side to side, but slide outside of the TE when the strong side goes his way. I allow the TE to run his route with the SS coming up from deep in the secondary. Both OLB are extremly quick and attack the offensive backfield. they apply quick pressure from the edges. Also can cover RB in the flats.

in the 3-4, one of the ILB is a coverage specialist.

Default My Lbs Do What They"re Supposed To

Ask anyone that's played my BUCS...Derrick Brooks can get 50yds downfield in my Tampa 2 just like he does in real life. Or he can jump the Flat in front of any RB and take it to the house. Or he can break the RB in half on an outside run. Just like REAL life!

Or, more recently, people run away from my Urlacher, but he is ALWAYS in the play. Ask Michigan Joe's dynamic duo, Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister. Actually, Urlacher just made the last play, whereas Lance Briggs and Hunter Hillenmeyer cleaned house all day long. Hey! That happens in REAL life! Briggs and Hillenmeyer make plays all day long and Urlacher makes the last big play and he's the hero!?!?!?!?!

Unlike MOST coaches/players, I play a REAL defense, NOT a 10-1 jam-it-in-your-arse one-layer D with a Safety or LB stacked behind the NT. I play a 4-3 Tampa 2 with my BUCS; a 4-3 Base with my ILLINI and BEARS (Cover 2 sucked in the SB vs. Manning obviously!?!?!); and then a 3-4 Base with my BENGALS and WILDCATS.

I have 3-4 layers at ALL times except GL where real estate is scarce. My solution to that is to not let them inside my 20.

Great post. Pick a team and I'll draw up a signature scheme for ya, Dre. O and D. But.....PICK ONE TEAM!!!

Default Another great ?

Dre' I play a 4-3 base with hidden schemes. I like my LB's to have good speed and power. My DL's I try to have strong enough that it limits the inside run. This gives me a game plan to protect the outside running lanes and also the middle passing lanes. I'm not a believer in the 10-1 scheme either. On obvious pass plays I play a 3-3-5 with blitz and zone schemes.

Dre,

Keep the questions coming. I usually play a 4-3 alignment as well. Like Jimbo and Raven I don't play 10-1 deal. When the 10-1 works it's great but when it doesn't it's usually a quick score or a play that breaks for some big yards for the offense. My D line is fairly strong and my LBers are quick. As they have the same responsibility they do in any NFL team. So if you asked me to classify them they would be fairly strong and fast. I think Norbert would call them Ironmen.

Default I run a 4-2

2 DT's, 2 looper's and 2 ILB's.

!) do you want your lb's strong without too much speed ?
Ironman type strengh and speed, enolve speed to cover either sideline if Backs are angled outward.
2)do you want your lb's superfast and strong.
I run 3 sets of ILB's, ironman, power, and strickly speed, I run ironman most of the time when I play, it also depends on FOB or AT, or sticks, TTQB.
3) do you shuffle linebackers according to the offensive set ?
Everydown
4)Are your linebackers positioned to get a hat on a rb/te ?
Yes
5) Are your lb's designed to drop into coverage ?
Yes
