Why Is Adrian Peterson (vikings) So Much Better Than Reggie Bush

Im starting to wonder if reggie bush is going to pan out in the NFL. Reg rutledge called it at his house one day early inthe season. Reg said peterson is the best back he has seen in many years. He is a pure runner like the old school running backs. Dont think im crazy, i think he may be better than tomlinson. I know LT accomplished many things and peterson is just a rookie, but watching him run is more entertaining thanm LT.


WHO WAS GREAT IN COLLEGE AND DID NOT DO ANYTHING IN THE PRO'S ?

Last question, When you see a player listed on a roster as being on the pratice squad, what is that ? WHAT EXACTLY DOES A PLAYER LISTED ON THE PRATICE DO ? I know PRATICE but to what degree ? Are they availlable if needed in a game, or are they just there to there for the starters to scrimmage against ?

The running back from notre dame a few years back (Darius walker) i think it's walker is listed on the pratice squad for the Texans. If i remember, wasn't he good at notre dame, why is he on the pratice squad ?

To understand what is going on with Reggie Bush you have to look at the statistics. Bush has only carried the football 157 times this season. That's 13 touches per ball game. The Saints are a passing offense. Drew Brees has thrown more often than any other quarterback up to this point (that includes Manning and Brady) and he is throwing at nearly 70%. So basically, 7 out of 10 times, Brees is on target. He is averaging about 8 yards per completion which means that he is getting rid of the ball very quickly and throwing short. They are managing the game with the pass.

I crunched the digits and Brees has taken every snap this season and thrown every pass for the Saints. His passing yards account for exactly 75% of the Saints offense. This is being done by design. When you have a quarterback who is that accurate, it is actually better to move the ball in the air as the big play chances are better in the passing game.

Contrast this with Minnesota. Taylor and Peterson in 11 games have posted a precise 30 rush per game average. This is also by design.

With Bush averaging 3.8 (which is really 4) yards per rush but only rushing 13 times per game, he dosen't have enough touches to get the job done. This points to the poor ability of the Saints offensive line more so than at the ability of Bush. Marcus Allen also averaged about 3.8 yards lifetime, but he was a 25 to 30 rush per game back. Big difference.

As long as Drew Brees is the quarterback, Bush will never be the focal point. The Saints can build a better offensive line and acquire new recievers to bolster the passing game which will loosen up the run.

When you can't run the football you can't win as often because you can't close out games. This is why the Saints have been so inconsistent this year.

When you draft a running back with the number 1 pick overall, you want that back to be productive. I just don't think the Saints running game is up to the challenge and don't forget they lost their leading rusher Duce McAllister for the rest of the season. Maybe they just don't have the personnel and depth to get it done right now.

With good GM moves in the off season, the Saints should be back in 08.

I'll answer each question in numerical order because I have something to say about all of them! I like these kind of posts...

The comparison of AD and LT is a good one. They both will be great runners when its all said and done! However, I'm not confident enough to venture out into the waters of who is the better back just yet. AD is definetly a rare talent. He has that rare tri-combination of speed/power/quickness! However, history shows he has durability issues which are a question mark. He seems to recover well however, he spends quite a bit of time injured. He could been arguably the best runner in NCAA history had he stayed healthy. He rushed for over 2000 yards as a freshman and lead his team to a national championship appearance. This guy lead the league in rushing with over 1000 yards through 8 games, sat out for 2 weeks and returned to still be leading the league in rushing! He is GREAT! FANTASTIC! PHENOMENAL! Stating healthy will tell his legacy!

Who was great in college but did not do anything in the PROS? A lot of folks! The reverse is also true! No namers becoming great in the league! A huge part of this is systems. When being recruited it is important to study your options. Be sure that you will be a viable asset to their schemes. If not you may go unrecognized! "Ronald Curry" is a great example of this! The best player in HS Football & Basketball his senior year but he goes to play football at UNC! Horrible decision. Maybe he went for hoops but even still he plays football first!

The practive squad consists of a large number of players that did not make the 53 man roster. However, a lot of them get upgraded to the squad when injuries happen, etc. They are their to run the plays of the upcoming opponent!

I think DM hit this one on the nose. If Reggie Bush had Minnesota's offensive line, it would be a more accurate comparison. Until New Orleans focuses on and revamps the OL, Peterson will have better stats.

When a back looks like he's running as if he's angry at the world, running downhill, with the power of Jim Brown, the speed of Dickerson and Simpson, the ability to make you miss of a Marcus Allen, it becomes pretty clear what this guy can do.

At the beginning of the season, in many prognostications, the Vikings offensive line was considered subpar. The New Orleans Saints were looked at as a potential Super Bowl contender. Amazing how one man had an effect on the fortunes of a team in one- Deuce McAlister.

I think Bush will go on to be more of an Eric Metcalf-type. From what I see of Bush, he always looks to hit it outside. He just don't seem to like hitting it up inside between the tackles. No doubt, outstanding speed and great balance and what a game changing-type player but I think his touches will be limited because he just does not have the physical stature to take the pounding of the great ones. Yes, put him in space and he can do some damage but if you build your offense mainly around his ability to run the ball, you may be in trouble.

What Bush had at USC was an outstanding big offensive line. With All-Americans like what he had, I could still probably gain 1,000 yards rushing. However, I do acknowledge Bush greatness, not just in the same ilk as Peterson.

To me, Peterson is that prototype great back. He recovers from injuries quick. Tremendous heart! Sheer determination! And angry! When Peterson runs, you're not only looking at a 4.3 speedster but you're looking at a big back with "wiggle". Guys like this come alone only once in a lifetime. He combines all the characters of the great ones, the power of Brown, the vision of Sayers, the speed of "the Juice", the elusiveness of Allen, the size of Dickerson, the heart of Sweetness, and the instincts of Sanders. You can may not appreciate his greatness because you may not realize how important he is to that team (Vikings). Being a lifelong Vikings addict, it did my heart to see him slip to 7th overall. The word that he's injury prone was way overblown. His injuries were self-inflicted. It was not like he took a big hit. He dove into the endzone and landed on his clavicle. That's how he got injured on one run!


I had the opportunity to officiate one of his games in high school. Peterson was a man among boys. There was another one that I got to see up close and person that Texas turned into a linebacker, Sergio Kindle. Kindle averaged 14 yards per carry. These guys were special runners in Texas. Kindle was not as fast and did not have the "wiggle" of the great backs but Peterson could break a game open in a moments notice.

Peterson needs no second back to take some carries. I like Chester Taylor but he will be gone next year. Bush will need "Deuce" McAlister for the next 4-5 years to take the pounding so he can come in and do his thing.

Appreciate the moment. Appreciate the player because you are truly looking at a once in a lifetime runner.

decal master,bush is soft, does not like to run between the tackles, avoids contact like the plague. remember the collge championship game USC/TEXAS. the most important play in the game on 4th and one, bush was on the sidelines watching a tough running back try and get the yard. even with minnesota's line, bush would be average at best. he's not a every down feature back and new orleans knows that, the saints weren't a pass happy team until their star feature back was lost for the year, mr. mccallister. he ran all the way to the pro bowl behind that same offensive they currently have, bush is soft fellas. he cannot handle running the ball 25 times a game. lets see lindell white is the all time touchdown leader in USC HISTORY, did'nt bush play on the same team? bush is a third down back. james drew from ucla is a much better all around back than bush as well, he's out doing bush in punt returns and total yards from scrimmage per game, as a matter of fact drew leads the entire league in all total purpose yards from scrimmage. BUSH AIN'T KNOW PEDERSON, BUSH AIN'T EVEN DREW. taylor ran behind that same viking line last year for 1,200 in 16 games, PEDERSON HAD THAT AT 8 GAMES AND NOT STARTING IN 4. Hey Reg. this is a great debate! I love AD. I think if healthy he will the best back in NFL history! However, even thou his injuries were self inflicted they were injuries none the less. He has spent a significant amount of time on the IR during 2 seperate seasons at OU and 2 weeks during his rookie season. So for 3 out of his 4 most significant years playing football (3 at OU and 1 with the Vikes) he has spent some time injured. I'd love to see this guy stay injury free because he is going to do some very special things in the league if he does! He is so good that I'm still angry at Texas for dropping the ball on him...Although Texas had very little to do with him choosing OU the history of how Mack Brown runs his program and treats his athletes resulted in AD's decision to head to OU over Texas!
