![]() I just read on a post were Reginald Rutledge said that to him this is a toy! WOW!!!!! No one jumped on him or lashed out at him for his comment. But a few years ago every one wanted to attack me for my comment checkers vs chess! I guess " You can't Handle the Truth" rtfl$ rtfl$
![]() ![]() Toy is defined as something dimnutive, something a childs plays with, something you deal with lightly. Game is defined as a procedure or strategy for gaining an end, a mental competition conducted according to rules, a division of a larger contest. The way this hobby is played is that of a toy still. Many are returning to the toy they played as a child. But there are people out there who don't want to return to play with a toy, no matter how much you try to dress it up to be something that it can not be it is what it is. This I think is why some of you get offended by what I post because you're reading it through the eyes of a toy that you love, and I'm seeing through the eyes of a sports strategy game. Much like the way I did when I gave the example of EF/MF being like checkers vs and MPFL being chess. As many have tryed to place a label of toy on the MPFL System. So to the many coaches who love to play the way that you do, have fun, do what you do, and love what you love. But there are coaches out there who don't want to play with, or view the hobby as a toy. They want more from this hobby, so now they have it. I'm not trying to change the way that grown men play with there toys, but I wanted to create a game that address key points that a toy can never do. To address and focus on the mental aspect of the game and not the use of a prop. Negative Comments: Some might post a somewhat negative comment and let me tell you why: They are offended, embarrassed, by the truth, they will jump to defend there feelings and to get the focus off the truth on to something else. Much like people who run from church to church, when the preacher preachres on there sin they get offended and run to another church. Positive Comments: Some might post somewhat of a positive comments and let me tell you why: They take the time to read and understand what is writen, they look at the truth and are not offended by it. Now I'm going to bring it home, Don't be offended it you like to play with a toy, no need to feel that way, if you do then you condemn you're self and try to put the bad light on me. Vegitable vs Fruit, Car vs Motorcycle, Caveman vs To Days man, Day vs Night, Checkers vs Chess, Toy vs Game, Right vs Wrong. One can not be the other no matter how you dress it up. The elements make it what it is.

![]() I know I'm new to this site but I must comment on subject at hand and voice my opinion. It doesn't offend me not 1 little bit when someone refers to this hobby as a toy ! I think we all have alil kid left in us cause if we didn't we wouldn't be human. I , in the last couple months since I've been busy trying to recruit new coaches in my area , have been laughed at and been tried to , somewhat to a certain degree , treated like a baby but I don't care what anybody/anyone says about EF cause I think its the greatest hobby/game/toy , or whatever else ya wanna call/refer to it as , is the GREATEST ! ! !

![]() I think it is all in who is saying it is a toy, etc. At one time, for me, it was a part of my life. It is now a hobby, maybe will again be a part of my life. To me, for only the first day or 2 I had my first set, it was toy. Never since.

![]() WOW!!! Mr. Anthony I don't know you but after reading your post if you knew Mr. Rutledge and the efforts that he put into electric football to make this the most realistic hobby there is then you would know that your definition of game is 2nd to the true definition of game that has been inspired & created by Reg Rutledge himself.
The word "Toy" is used by many in this "Hobby" just as the word game is used by Mattell, Milton & Bradley and other game creators. Why don't you call up one of those game makers and tell them that connect four, candy cane lane, Sorry, trouble and all the other board games that my kids enjoy playing and tell them that their games should not be called games that they are toys because there is truly not very much strategy in those games and see where it gets you. Why is the way that a man describes a passion of his so important that it warrants a post such as the one you posted. Its obvious that you have an underlying agenda. If you had wanted to address the comment of toy -vs- game you could have done that without saying "I just read a post by Reginald Rutledge". Just say that you have just read a post regarding this hobby being referred to as a toy, why use his name! The people in this hobby!!! By the way in the definition of the word "TOY" you forgot to mention that the word is also described as a pastime, a supportive or amusing act, a diversion! This is Electric Football! A pastime of all of ours, Electric football is amusing its a diversion that gets us away from our everyday lives. Electric Football is in FACT a "TOY"!!! Who cares? As long as you enjoy it...would it make any difference if it were called Tiddley-Winks or Global-Thermo Nuclear Hop Scotch? The fact...It IS a toy. Plastic figures on a metal game board is a toy. It is sold at TOY stores or in TOY departments. If that upsets you...that's YOUR problem. The fact number 2...It IS a hobby. The customization & the collectability make it a definite hobby. The fact number 3...It IS a strategy game. Some people make it more of a simulation than others...but we ALL play it as some sort of football strategy version. It is all 3 combined at some level...but it IS a toy and it IS a hobby and it IS a strategy game. If something in and of that offends YOU...again, that is YOUR problem not the EF community's. |

![]() Does it really matter? What matters is, are you having fun? Do you love competing? Do you love the commaraderie? Do you love the fellowship? Does the "Game", or "Toy" develope friendships? Man different parts of the country use different rule sets. There is not "One" correct set of rules to play the "Game" or "Toy" under. To me it is game, toy, and a hobby. Yet I'm not offended when someone calls it a game, and someone else calls it a toy, and yet another calls it a hobby. I enjoy the "Toy", "Game", and or "Hobby", it takes my mind off of the everyday stresses of life. So lets not lash out at one another, respect each others opinions of the "Game", "Toy", and or "Hobby", and work towards a common goal of growing the hobby, toy, and or game. Great minds work in many different ways, so continue creating, developing, and enjoying what each of you do in this"Game","Toy", and "Hobby", and EF, MF will continue to be an enjoyment for all of us "Coaches" throughout the World.
Just my Opinion

![]() Anthony,
I really don't know if you're trying to call me out on something but that's just my opinion. I need not Webster Dictionary to define anything that I do. Although it helps having learned scholars establish some standards of what words should mean, it still is defined by one's own perception of what he truly think something is. For example, I define toys as anything that allows ME the ability to have fun. It takes ME away from the seriousness of life and puts ME back into a time where there are no cares or worries. I am doing things that make ME enjoy. To me, that's my toy. I am happy I don't ride on the words of others to find critique in the most diminutive words that one must say. I could easily critique many terms that you may use, often misplaced or miswritten, but grammatical class is something I have not the time to start. So I understand, we write on the fly, we think on the fly, and to that effect, we let certain words and their usage go unchecked. So this one word I use, "Toy" and you want the miniature football community to come down on me? It's just my opinion of a word Anthony! Not everyone else. I've got so many things I define as "fun toys". They range from jetskis to computers to violins to football men. To me, these are all toys because they allow me to get away from the seriousness of life and play with things I love to do. Yes, things will continue to be toys for me as long as I have breathe and is capable of playing with the game. Whether that game be football or computer games, to me they will continue to be toys. That is how I define when I have fun. For me, there is no need to define my standard of fun based on a word. Guys that come to my house will tell you I am Peter Pan and I don't ever want to leave Neverland. Just my opinion. Reg Last edited by Reginald Rutledge : 01-01-2008 at 11:16 AM. |
