new helmet style?
there is an article on espn.com about the possibility of a new helmet being used in football starting next season. it's too early for april fool's pranks, so i guess that it is real? here's a pic of the helmet, as well as the link to the story.

That facemask would be alot easier to put on a MF figure. Way too cool.

Back to the Future?
Very throwback looking...
I read the detailed articles...it is an interesting concept. I think that a lighter helmet that provides better potection is something that's tough to ignore. I do get the feeling they will "tweak" the look though. I'm curious to see what other facemaks look like as well as color combinations. Thinking in terms of how some teams colors are today, there might not be that much of a noticeable difference from further away with some teams (e.g. Steelers, Jags, Broncos...any team that matches face mask and helmet colors). Plus, with this design you might see more teams go with the same colors on both helmet and mask...especially those that have grey masks but different colored helmets... I am interested to see what happens... |

The Patriots may look something like this. I can't believe NFL Network has not had anything on this yet.

I am guessing...
It shouldn't be too tough to mold the facemask in two colors...something like this....

hey what ever keeps the players safer is all good
Hey IMHO if it keeps the players safer is a plus. I saw a report on two players from the 60s i believe that were the best of friends, played in a Superbowl against each other and now can barely remember thier own names. And look at dudes like Trent Green, we love the game but I think we forget sometimes life after Football is difficult for the players that catch constant concussions and other life changing injuries.

Biglock...you said it...
Whatever helps the players!
We enjoy watching them try and knock eachother out each week, but the toll on their bodies and minds is tremendous. It would be nice if they could do that AND have some kind of normal life after football. With all the money the NFL makes, they owe it to these guys to make that a reality In addition to the head and neck injuries, you would think it would also help cut down on injuries that are caused by helmet to "other body parts" contact...being that the outer shell is softer. And...after looking at the thumbnail from ESPN, I see the side angle shows they tried to incorporate the new facemask into more of a design element...it goes back quite a bit farther on the sides than the first pic would suggest...so maybe not so much of a throwback look afterall... |
