Final Score: New York Jets 24 Eagles 0
The Philadelphia Eagles kicked off their season still thinking this was preseason with a loss to the underdog 1968 New York Jets, 24-0. Reggie White, one of the strongest players in the league had no tackles as the Eagles defense had no answer for Emerson Boozer.
Boozer rushed for a game high 202 yards on 8 carries with breakaway runs of 68, 60, 42, and 28 yards. The Eagles just seemed out of sync as Joe Namath made every opportunity count with 12-18 passing for 185, 1 TD, and 2 interceptions with 2 sacks for 20 yards. This was a rather pedestrian performance by all accounts. Randall Cunningham was even worse with just 4-9 completions for 130 yards, 0 TDs, and 4 interceptions along with 4 sacks for 46 yards. The Eagles vaunted front four were sliced and diced by the surprising Jets defense. Keith Byars rushed for 53 yards and Cunningham 51 but every yard came with a price. This game was scheduled to be a televised game but the national affiliates saw that the Eagles would mount no offense and decided to switch to Heidi. Stats are posted with this report Namath passed for 185 and Cunningham 130 The winner: RJ373 for Joe Willie Namath. He predicted 187 |
