Do you feel the qb's pre 1980 are better than todays qb's.
Here is why I think they are.
'80 to currrent qb's are bigger and may have stronger arms ,
but qb's pre 1980 called there own plays , so they had to be leaders.
They also had to deal with their own ego , we all know most qb's want to throw the ball every down. the pre 80 qb's had to do what was best for the team above their own goals.
Qb's before 1980 had to be able to manage the game ..time , down and situation , personel and on and on etc.

Pre 80's qb's also had to deal with the fact that their receivers could be mugged all up and down the field. Less chance of seperation from a DB.

yes, and qbs took alot more punishment back then,there was no penalty for helmet to helmet or rules to protect the qb.

I will go by division & let you decide. In the late 70's the QB position was so deep, that the back-ups could easily be starters in most cases. Also, the youngster who took over for the old pro kept the offense moving (business as usual) There are also a few dogs in there (Detroit...WOW).

in firm agreement with all previous suggestions, BUT

when you are judging something, use correct context also...

it basically is apples and oranges these days. my era will always be the early to late 70's, thats just me.

im partial to Staubach for reasons mentioned by others, but man what a great group the 70's had ay?

In my opinion, the 80's QBs are better. I believe that because back then QBs had to operate on their own. An example would be there were no headsets in their helmets. Defenders could tee off on them even though they didn't have the ball. And the referee didn't give them the call unless the hit they took was blatantly deliberate.

Over all the 80's and earlier QBs had more to deal with in regards to operating against opponent defenses. QBs today are spoiled. A lot of things go their way in the calls that they get.

If you will allow me to digress for a moment, the rules have changed to protect the QB of today because the speed and the violence of the game has increased.
