Fumbles
I trying to find a way to create fumbles in my solitaire league. I've been placing a weighted football on the player's base, if the football falls off the ballcarrier's base during a play before the board is stopped then its a fumble and any unengaged player is then pivoted toward the ball. Whoever gets there first has possession. The Problem is fumbles occur too often on about half of the plays especially if there is a long gain. I'd like to hear how others incorporate fumbles in their games.

When I played in the TBA (Tidewater Buzzball Association) several years ago, this was the rule we used:
1) Prior to each game, each coach selects one player to be designated as "fumble man." 2) On any solo tackle by that player, a coin is flipped: 2a) Heads: No fumble. 2b) Tails: FUMBLE! 3) If a fumble occurs, the coin is flipped again: 3a) Heads: Offense recovers at the spot and retains possession. 3b) Tails: Defense recovers at the spot, 1st-and-10 (there were no fumble returns). This rule was in effect on all plays from scrimmage, special teams plays, etc. We didn't have too many, but we had just enough that it kept a nice flavor in the games.

The way we play it in MPFL is very simple. After the handoff, or catch, the ball-carrier is given the ball, placed back on the board in the exact spot, and the play delelops. If a defender's hand is touching the ball or the ball carrier's arm at the time of a sub-sequent stoppage, the ball has been stripped away.
The ball is dropped and the recovery effort begins. I use repro "defensive back" figures (the dude with the outstretched arms) as inside linebackers. My Harry Carson and Sam Huff were ball-stripping masters. Next year, Short, Pierce, and Emmons will be handling those duties. This happens often as I once forced three fumbles in one game and put one on the ground myself. Hope this helps you. Last edited by Decal Master : 12-13-2006 at 12:27 PM. |

dice is a good way to produce fumbles
Using dice can help get two dice and set up a number that will mean fumble roll the dice after a run play or a catch when that number rolls then you will have a fumble you can then roll to see who recovers the ball.

One Small change !
DM,
Please note that if the BALL is touched only. Either the defender's hand, helmet, etc has to be touching the BALL . And if the runner dropes the BALL. Quote:

This how I play fumbles. If a defenders front of his base hits the entire front of a ball carriers base ( meaning head on ) it is considered a hard hit fumble. This senario assumes that the ball carrier is on the ground and CANNOT recover the ball. I use the red passing simulation stick then I place the ball and any player engaged or unengaged can be turned to recover the football. When the ball is recovered all players are pivoted and either a return or recovery run commences. If a ball carrier is hit by two defenders at the same time it is considered a strip. The red passing stick is used and any player including the ball carrier can recover the ball and either return or a recovery return is done. Finally, If a ball carrier is hit and falls follow the hard hit rule. Any questions ask. By the way both coaches decide on the placment of the ball. An equal distance from all players. If there isn't one then the defense sets the ball.

where is the ball placed on the ball carrier...because in the game of footall a ballcarrier can only carry ball in his hands? I LIKE THE FUMBLE MAN IDEA...WE USE THAT IN BELTSVILLE

The ball carrier can carry the ball in his arm, or on his base. That way there is a chance on every play to cause a fumble, and not limit this to one player .
If you look at it 99% of all fumbles are caused by a defender's hand, or helmet on the ball. 1% is caused by the runner him self, or a team mate.

I like to play where if a ball carrier falls over on the board, there is a fumble. I then put him upright and drop the ball from about 3 inches above his back. All unegaged players except the fumbler can pivot and run to recover the ball. Upon recovery, all unengaged players can pivot and the recovering player can run with the ball. I usually only have a fumble once every 6-10 games, but a fumble can be devastating when each team only gets two offensive posessions.
