Default Game vs Toy

There might be some who think that this hobby is a toy, while others are not sure.

The MPFL System Design is a game not a toy and hear is why.

Game : A procedure or strategy for gaining an end , a scheme or maneuver.

Toy : To act or deal with somthing lightly or without viger or purpose, to amuse oneself as if with a toy.

When you say things like ( it's just plastic men on a metal board ) then you place you're self in the ( Toy )

Now you can play with anything, you're car, a sport, you're friend, you can play music.

But when you deal with some something lightly and without viger then you're play with a toy, no matter what it is .

The MPFL is a system not to be taken lightly or without viger. It has the ability to turn a toy into a game.

Chess vs Checkers

When a coach has everything going there way and they win then they want to say that this is a strategy game, but then go south and they lose then it's just a toy.

Not trying to offend anyone, if you're offended I apologies. I'm just want to make a point that a game and a toy are not the same .

Regardless of what rules set or system we play ... It's a game..

I think we put too much of ourselves into these "toys" to merely call it a toy, too much time, too much effort...

Painting our own teams, manipulating prongs and bases, working on figures, strategy and play.....

But then again.. Why get all wrapped up in "definitions"
A lot of people think we're all nuts for playing with little plastic men on plastic bases on a field made of sheet metal or fiberboard that vibrates..

Guess what.. I couldn't care less what they think..
I'm having fun.. I enjoy it..
But then... I don't try to make it more than it is..
It's a release and it simulates the greatest game that's ever been played.. IMO

Default Well said KB

I agree with you on that KB. I put to much time and effort into this to be classified as a toy when once you play a game in it you will see that this is far from a toy.

Thanks

Settle down....my toy comment in the other thread was a compliment to your system.

The game is a toy. Plastic parts, plastic figures, metal game board....it's a toy. HOWEVER, your effort in this system and the effort of many others in this hobby is to take the "toy" out of the game....which was my point. That is what has made the hobby come back so strong. And in your specific case you have added certain rules to the way you play to make it play less like a toy and more like a simulation.

HOWEVER...at the end of the day, it's still plastic figures vibrating on a game board.

My comment about restrictions is simple: You can't simulate EVERYTHING. In other words, you can't make miniature football players that think for themselves or have mental breakdowns or physical injuries. It's impossible to make a 100% simulation.

My compliment to you is that you make it as close as it can get.....but you're still limited because the "players" are still plastic figures (which many would call "toys")!!!

Perfect example: Your 3 stop philosophy adds realism...but what happens after the 3rd stop? You let the "toy" take over. In one play example on the DVD, you have a player that changes directions and splits tackle during the 3 stops...BUT after the 3rd stop he breaks into the clear and is running free with 60 yards left for the TD. What happens? He runs out of bounds at the 7 yd line and NONE of the defensive players are chasing him. Is that how football is played? Is that 100% simulated realism?

See what I mean?

You've added a TON of realism and should be commended for making it a simulation but you can't take 100% of the "toy" out of the toy.

Sorry if that offends you...it's just a fact.

Default Hobby?

Toy or game, why do we care? I think the reason for this question is the assertion that MPFL is for adults and not children, which clearly it is intended for by the desginer. "Toy" is generally is classified for children whereas it more generally acceptable in our minds for adults to play "games".

Definition of a toy: an object, often a small representation of something familiar, as an animal or person, for children or others to play with; plaything

Definition of a game: a competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators.

To be technical about it, the word game is probably more appropriate for the MPFL (and MF in general) because it fits the definition of the word to a T. Maybe a figure could be considered a toy. I think most would agree that by definitions above, a GAME it is! But to me the best word is still hobby because that encompasses all of the painting, customizing, detailing, tweaking, GAMING, etc.

I could not agree more! Spoken like a true engineer! For me, I consider it a toy and a game and a hobby. Truth be told, I like to play with toys! As a matter of fact, I love toys. I love the fun aspect of toys. I still go to Toys 'R Us and play around with the toys. So, I can't put myself on any type of plain where I don't acknowledge the kid in me, cause it's still there.

When I look at games, I get too serious. Sometimes for me, it takes the fun out of it. For me, I would classify what I do as a big kid having fun with his toys that happens to be my hobby!

Definitions can be subjective too. So as long as its fun for me and its little men running around, it will always be a grownup toy for me.

However, I do know how to revert back to the mature level of being a grownup as well.

****.. I hadn't thought about all that...
I'm getting cremated... No headstone.. Nothing to signify I was ever here on earth.. And especially no freaking funeral staff stopping traffic..

I'd better get something figured out.. I need to get a new will made up and hadn't thought about my hundreds and hundreds of teams.. bases in the 5 figures range..

My son has no use for it..

And I wouldn't feel right about having all my EF stuff burnt up...

Wolf.. You can have my 1967 Big Man Chiefs in Dark...
Still numbered up with Lenny Dawson, Mike Garrett, Bert Coan, Otis Taylor, Buck Buchannan, Bobby Bell, Jim Lynch, Willie Lanier, Emmitt Thomas, Johnny Robinson and Jim Tyrer.
