Default Are we the only ones who want to be on TV?

Because of the last TV post I was just thinking about this. Many of us (ME) in the MF community have expressed the desire to get MF on television...are we the only ones?

For those of you who are involved in Subuteo (sp?) Shabby J, Eightball, have any of those players expressed a desire to see their game on TV?

Norbert, George Diamond, have any of the Rod Hockey coaches expressed a desire to be on TV?

Those of you who do slot car racing, 1/32 or HO, has anyone in those circles expressed a desire to see that on TV?

Are we as MF enthusiasts just seeking glory by wanting to be on the small screen? Are we crazy?

I'm wondering because many of these hobbies seem to be more advanced than ours when it comes to national structure and competitions. This being the case how come they haven't persued TV...or have they? If they have what response did they get? If anyone has any insight please share...I don't have a clue.

Do we have a better shot at hitting the small screen if we package ourselves with Subuteo, Scale Auto Racing, and Rod Hockey?

I'm just brainstorming but here are few things that I believe.

1. If MF is to be on TV we have to think outside of our box.

2. What ever we do has to be "Good TV" which means that we may have to adjust things in the rules so that our game plays better for TV...some of us may not be willing to do that.

3. We have to get to the "right" people at the "right" time. I have written a couple of treatments for MF TV shows and don't have a soul to give them to. We have figure out how to get to the folks who make decisions.

4. It has to be presented in a way that it will benefit the networks meaning that companies would have to want to advertise during that time slot. They have to see ratings and dollars.

5. We will probably have to get an episode in the can of whatever we do because many won't get our ideas if we explain them...we have to show them.

Just some of my thoughts

Please share yours

Default Dmc...

It is interesting that you write about this because I was just speaking to Reg. Rutledge about this not so long ago when I told him that our league needed to spend out on the type of camers that the news reporters have when they are reporting live coverage. The quality of the video is extremely important. Obviously if we were on TV they would have their own cameras but its important to put together a high quality piece to send to the networks along with a press release that would generate interest. This is what I think would have to happen...

1. Obviously some rule tweaking that would appeal to the television audience

2. A Reg. Rutledge production. I mean stadiums, player intros, the national anthem with the Tennessee Band, Smoke coming out of the tunnel, the blimp, penalties and injuries, commentators, press conferences, etc. (No one does it better)

3. It would have to be recorded then obviously edited and collaged together for TV. We all know our events cannot go on live. Lol. It would also cut down the amount of actual TV time it takes.

4. We also have to get every EFLer in the US and abroad and their family and friends on their coaches tunning in. We need ratings!

5. I hate to say this but 2 highly skilled coaches, playing at a very high level where execution is at a premium. We can't have these figures running around in circles at this thing. Lots of strategies and schemes, plays must be executed.

I'm sure there is more but that's the just of it. It could happen!

Default Why I Want TV Coverage

I saw a RC racing competition on TV a few years ago. The History channel displayed RC turbine jets awhile ago as well. Model trains have a way of turning up a show here and there. As a result of their consistency as a hobby, they have managed to be respected enough to be given a time slot on TV.

I believe that if we want that same respect, we must demonstrate that we too are consistent especially in the area of player movement, for player movement is the foundation of our hobby. Player movement is essential regardless of the style of play.

It’s about the challenge not ego for me. I want to see how far I can push the envelope. I want to see if this thing can work. I always ask myself the question, “How can we get some attention?”

I want to be able to say, “Look America! The game that you thought couldn’t be played can be played.”

49ers fan Is this the spot with Lomax from DC? The link would't work for me it took me to a recipie page. But if it's the DC spot I saw that one. It was nice.

I like and appreciate your responses. Mike I agree that we need all of the hype but I also think that we need a way to commentate so that the viewers would know what was going on. Not just describing the action but giving coaching tidbits, what the coach may be trying to exploit, etc. In order to do this without giving away strategy to an opponent it would have to be done after the fact or in another area with a telepromptor so that the coaches playing couldn't hear the commentary.

Maurice, you are right in that those hobbies have some consistency but the reason I mentioned the ones I did (MF, Subuteo, Slot Car Racing, Rod Hockey) is because they share things in common, i.e tabletop games based on a sport that people play competitively.

I know that everyone has their own goals as I have mine. I'm interested in getting with folks with the same goals as me which is getting MF on TV and getting paid for it. To some this may sound crazy or like a slight to the hobby but it makes sense to me. They always say to do what you love as your job...well I love MF, and I've been trying to figure out how to "turn pro" for years. A TV show is the first thing that comes to mind if anyone else has any other ideas, I'm listening. Someone asked on the other post how personal time could be created to do a TV show...how would we get off of work for an extended period of time. My answer would be that MF would have to be our job. I'm pretty sure that we could get way more than the nation's average salary if we were on TV. I don't even have to play, I could produce, announce, commentate, whatever just as long as I'm a part of it.

I love it DMC, awesome thinking, a great and much welcome viewpoint. I think something needs to be put together on DVD and edited using the same format as the intended show and then shop it around.

I am going to see if I can make some headway at the DIY channel, I mentioned it earlier, they do a lot of craft shows. Could we get something on a local LA channel?

Maybe I can make some calls and eventually get to someone on the phone at DIY, to see how a hobby show makes it to the air.

Can't hurt.
