'68 or '69 , I am guessing. I know the Jets had them on their jerseys in Super Bowl III , but the Colts did not. I know the AFL did before the NFL .

I believe it was in 1970 which was the first year of the merger. I do not remember the Vikings with names on their jerseys in Super Bowl IV when they played the Chiefs. However, in Super Bowl V I think both teams had names on the back of their jerseys. I would go with 1970.

The AFL did it first so that would be 1960, but your question asks when the NFL started it which would have to be after 1970 sometime....hmmmmm

As I mentioned previously I am almost certain it was the 1970 season. In the 1970 Super Bowl, which was the end of the 1969 season, I am pretty sure the Vikings did not have names on the back of their jerseys as opposed to the Chiefs. The NFL and AFL officially merged for the 1970 season. When I have seen replays of the Colts - Cowboys Super Bowl in 1971, which was the end of the 1970 season, both teams had names on the back of their jerseys. Again unless someone can prove different I am sure it began with the 1970 season.

I just went to an NFL website and I was correct. The names on the back of jerseys started in the 1970 season.
