Default THE LATE GREAT DR. KURT SMEBY ON PASS COVERAGE

COACHES, INSIGHT FROM A MASTERFUL COACH

In his words !!!!!!!!!!

What you do to protect against passes is very dependent on what kind of rules are allowed offensively. The most consideration is whether you are allowed to stop the board to allow receivers to run the stem of their route. Because if you do, you can also adjust the defenders into a good man and zone positions. If not, running zones simply won't work because the men WON'T (ON THEIR OWN) be able to see and follow the qb and receivers.

The other major consideration is a defensive rule. Does your rules allow jamming at the line ? In the 60's this was o.k. all the way until the ball was released but the rule changed in the 70's to deny the bump and run more. If you CAN bump and run (without forced release), This is far more effective than the underneath zone or man coverages with the wide receivers. If you are NOT allowed to bump and run and you are NOT allowed STOPS ON the board, YOUR IN TROUBLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
