I played TE in High School (Irving MacArthur,Texas) so I'm always fond of those sneaky TE's that creep out into coverage for a big gain.A good TE opens up the passing game as the defense can't simply DBL the outside WR's.
As a kid I used the Flex defense in Electric football to disrupt blocking schemes of my opponent(usually the Steelers ) a trick I learned from Coach Landry of course
Speaking of Coach Landry, any of you DFW folks remember his weekly TV show back in the 80's? He would bust out the projector and break game film down right there on the tube! He'd rewind over and over again to show one of his own linebackers getting burned on flare pass! Poor Steve Deossi....

Default Then & Now

I've enjoyed this post because so many of us have played the bigger game and now bring it to the smaller field. I played linebacker in pop-warner, highschool, college, and (currently) semi-pro. You try to bring that knowledge to our field but it's hard because I see certain plays develope and if I could stick a shoulder in, or throw a leg whip out(yeah it's illegal, but done always) I would. But one of things I've learned playing the game is to train at or on the side you don't normally play. If you're defensive minded then practice offense, but run the plays you know you can't stop...And stop it. One of the last camps I visited taught this and it help me. I play linebacker, but I've learned where the hole is going to be by learning from the offensive side of the ball. You look at Ray Lewis, Brian Urlacker, Mike Singletary, L.T. (NY Giants) and all the greats they either played the other side or they sat in on the others practice to learn it.

Dandy Don,

I remember Steve Deossie.

He played middle linebacker on the 1990 Giants Championship team. Didn't know he came over from Dallas.

When Norwood missed the field goal, Deossie was out on the field with his camcorder. A very joyous and funny moment for Giants fans.

Also, I like the TE position as well because they are in the best position to receive passes from the quarterback; right down between the hash marks.

Deossie played for the Cowboys from 84-88.I think they drafted him too.
Good point about the proximity of the TE to the QB. I thought you were going underground for a few weeks?

I guess I shoulda specified 1A schools!!! Jeff got it right: Ryan Yarborough, Wyoming, 1990-93, 229 catches, 4357 yards.

Although, your guy was still impressive at #13 in Career Receptions; and #28 in Career Yards.

Default What a great obsevation Decal Master

I swear, our Oakland Raiders, Coached by Jimmy Davis, employs the same strategy, with each play having a slight variation with shifts of personnel changes.

Default Good Post !!!!

WOW,.......Now this is good.

I have read over all the responces , every one has played a position or two , but no one really touched on the fundamenttals of the game , position by position , responsibility of each position . What it takes to mak a play develop , who needs to be blocked , how to move , what position you need to be in to make the play work .

Football is more than just running , passing , tackling , etc ,.... it is about thinking , reacting , reading , understanding keys . Mechanics of football !

When you coach at the Jr High level and up you MUST understan that this game is a thinking mans game .

Strategy plays a major part . Its not about just running around hitting guys , blocking etc , you have to think , read your keys , and react to them .

So yea what you know about the game of football truly bleeds over into how you play .

But as men it is very hard to say that someone is better than you . So the male pride gets in the way and we have what you see today in the EF community .

What does these position do ? What are they responsible for ?
How do they go about getting it done ? What are the mechanics for each position ?

LT, LG , C , RG , RT ,TE , WR1 , WR2 , HB , FB , QB .
DE , DT , NT , WLB , SLB , MLB , DB , SS , FS .

Special teams ,etc .

Red face I just love Football!!!

DA' MAYA',

It's great that you guys are reliving your glory days and fantasies on the football field! More power to yah! I grew up in the 70's when the "JUICE" was running loose! The Colts (home team), Steelers, Raiders,Cowboys ,Vikings were dominating the grid iron! Pop Warner, rec leagues and public school leagues were the big time for the moment! However, the BIG GAMES didn't start until Ridgewood Ave played Oakford Ave. in the Snow just after Thanksgiving! ParkHeights played Towanda in the SunBowl, or any day we kids came out to play each other one on one! No Coaches trying to proclaim their claim to fame on us kids! We did our own thing! We knew when to rush the QB. When to sit and wait for the pick. When to have the guts to run up the middle on the bigger kids! Yeh , that's right BOY! No GUTS no GLORY! We would even dive for the touchdown pass on the cement. I love this game and regardless of what I was taught, it's nothing like running up the middle and driving on a chump! It's to bad my team doesn't execute the execution of excellence like I use too! Thanks Smitty! I just figured out what my problem is? I'm not scared and I'm willing to try anything repetively!( ch.sp.)
I should be playing to win! Oh well, at least I look good doing what I do! I'm a champion already and nobody can take my childhood away! Big ups to the boys from POLY, Pimlico, Parkheights, Ridgewood, Oakford, Penhurst, and all of the other homies now serving time, dead or out of my realm of exsistance! It's a wonderful life! The Mayah has spoken!
