Question Board building question on a 24x48

Hi Guys,

When you talk about having a board that is 24x48, what is that? Is that the perimeter of the frame, or is it the actual, in bounds, playing field? Just trying to figure out how big the sheet metal order ought to be for the metal shop. thanks, Brian

Talking Size of field

I think that most coaches refer to the 24x48 as the size of the field, but not necessarily the dimensions for sideline to sideline. The field rests inside of the frame and is roughly the same size. It really depends upon the size of your sidelines.

I build my boards with larger sidelines. I like it that way because it lets you block people out of bounds and get that cutback without getting caught up in junk traffic. Just my 2 cents.

There is no set in stone rule on this. When I do a field cover for a field 48 x 24 it looks like this. There is a bout a 1/4 inch of grass outside of the outside edge of the out of bounds line. The overall size is 48 x 24. I have seen others that have the outside edge of the out of bounds line at 48 x 24 and others that have an inch or more on the outside of the out of bounds line.

Beautiful! Thanks! Right now, we can only get sheet metal that measures 24x48, which means that after you turn down the edges, you are down to 23x47. Can you just trim down the cover or reduce it? Blessings, Brian

Default >24"???

I'd have to guess the answer is no, however:
Can y'all field cover makers "create" a cover > than 24" in width while still 48" in lenght???
Just curious...Thx in advance as always !!

Default Cover size

Most players prefer a side line of atleast an inch and there is a also a large group that wants even more sideline room.My preferance is 1 inch, it gives you room for your chains, down marker and players don't bounce off the wall and back into play as much. Our covers have a standard 1 inch border that can be trimmed down if need be but it's much better to just order the cover with whatever sideline measurements you want. The big field is the thing now and they are great to play on, our league has two big boards and we love them but you must put some thought into what you want your game to look and play like.Selecting the size field, surface material, frame wood, paint or stain color, motor and motor positioning should all be secondary to your field layout,do that first, think it over and then make your own or have someone else do a computer mock up of what your field will look like.Cover options are permanent glossy vinyl, removable matt Fathead or glossy removable magnetic, once again think over carefully what you want.
One thing for sure, field covers add the realistic look anyone into the game
just has to love and the best part is "we are only limited by our imagination".
