Default The perfect game????

I've always been trying to find that perfect balance between having an offense move the ball and the defense stopping it. Now I'm wondering if my rules are too offensive orientated. Let me explain: I play 20 plays per quarter, not including kickoffs. That makes 80 plays per game. I've been playing my solitare league games and so far, well, I'm not so sure. In 4 weeks of play, I have one team averaging 34 points a game, next is 32, then 30, 28, 24, 23, 23, and finally 18. Defensively, they average 16, 20, 25, 25, 27, 28, 31 and lastly, 37.

Yardage wise, the offenses range from 370 total yards per game down to 228. Defensively, they range from 226 total yards to 379. Of the top 10 running backs, 5 are averaging 10+ yards a carry. As far as passing goes, the QB's are averaging about 60% completions, one interception per game, 1 1/2 TD's per game and average yards range from a high of 178 to a low of 82. What do you guys think? Is this too much, too little or about right?

Sometimes I think my teams are scoring too much, especially when the halftime score is 35 - 28, then other times the teams will go 2 or 3 quarters with no scores at all. The one thing I am happy with is that the for the most part, the games have been fairly even, with only a few blow outs.

So, I'm curious. What would you consider a perfect compromise? Given the number of plays per game, 80, what would you think an average score should be? 24-21? 17-13? 33-30? How many yards do you think an offense should have to be average? And what about the defense? Would you think that 10 yards per carry is too much? How about 9 yards, or 8? :o

Default Make it exciting

I believe electric football should be about play making; "explosive". Too many gamers try to emulate the real thing. Man make the defense have to make great plays. I try to make every play border on the brink of a big gain or a touchdown. If the defense makes the plays, so be it. I don't worry about stats or scores, its all about imagination and creativity for me. Heck, I make my punt returns and kickoffs as game breaking and exciting as possible.

I think the 10.0 avg for the backs are to much.
If you restrict the RBs some then the scores would go down some.
But if you are liking the outcome stay with it .

Just my take

That's sort of what I was thinking too, with the exception that those are the top rushers. Some of the other guys are averaging in the 4.0-5.0 range. One teams starting RB's are only getting 3.5 and 1.9. They are really struggling. Maybe I need to get the other guys up to speed, then modify the rules a touch to get the averages down into the 5 - 7 yards per carry range ??????

Default Tackling

What type of tackling do you allow (i.e. front of base or any touch)? How much time do you give your qb's to throw? I LUV offensive games but I found I had to scale it back a bit to give it some realism. Unless you're playing Arena football, 60+ points in a half is a bit much. Then again...it's your league. Play it the way you want.

I'm playing any touch, but don't allow stacking. Also limit the safeties to be at least 10 yards back from the LOS. The way I set the defense is I roll a pair of dice to see what formation they will be in and play that. I'm always the offensive coach going against a phantom defensive coach. Sometimes the dice sets up what I would use, other times it sets up a defense that doesn't work very well against the offense that I'm playing. Maybe I should be the defensive coach and let the dice run the offense??
