Default Size of passing sticks on big boards ?

Hi,

I'm actually reading many threads on the forum about passing simulation, and passing sticks. I understand the concept, now, and I think I'll use it to play and make demos around me : An easy way to play without "physical" skills (for people with disabilities, for example) and a good way -IMHO- to bring also some wargaming people (represents a lot of players here in France) confortable with measuring tools to EF too.

So...I learned that I needed 3 ball placement sticks and a measuring stick :

one measuring stick of 40 yards
one placement stick of 6 yards
one placement stick of 12 yards
one placement stick of 18 yards

I'm the owner of a "big board" of 42" x22". So, if I'm logical, I should measure the yards on my board, and make the sticks with that measures for reference.

But I readed that the "standard measures" (40, 6, 12, 18yards) were designed for 620 boards. And of course, yards on a 620 board are not the sames the ones on my 42" board...

...So I'm wondering if this "standard measures" will fit my big board, or if big board owners use smaller or bigger sticks to make the game more realistic.

Thank you for the help

Dimitri

Default Hey french,

I go by the mpfl standards where a scale skze board is used.

The board is 61 long im almost sure. On a scale size board 1 yard is a half inch.

1) 3 yards = inch 1/2

2)5 yards = 2 1/2 inches

3)7 yards = 3 1/2 inches.

etc etc just go down the ruler and choose.

***i know other fields are smaller but i just keep the same sticks from the scale size. It makes it more interesting for me.

Hi Dre,

thanks fo the answer, but to be honest I don't understand much

I searched on MPFL website, didn't found anything on it (except the pass simulation passing scheme). If I understand, in the MPFL system, we have to measure the distance of passing (QB>WR) in yards on the board, than translate it in inchs to place the ball marker ?

Personaly, I'd prefer the Buzzball system, wich is simplier (one bi-colored ruler, 3 sticks), because I have to think about the fact here in France very few people are involved in US football, so since they have to learn real football basic rules, I don't want to make too complex EF rules too.

So basically, my question is more "are the standard stick measurements (40, 6, 12, 18yards) good for my 42" board" ?

In one word (sometimes it's difficult to translate my toughts in english), to make my passing sticks, should I simply measure the yards on my board field, mark and cut the sticks ?

OR for better realism (I mean, realistic percentage of completion), should I proceed in another way to determinate the lenght of my 4 sticks ? (but conserving the simple "buzzball-like" system) ?

Dimitri,
Just go by yards regardless of what field size you are on. The difference takes care of itself. Sure on a big field it is farther to run for the pass but at the same time it is harder to defend as well. Just make the sticks according to your fields yards. This is my opinion. Others might disagree.

Default Here is an idea!

Use the measurements from the Buzzball sticks (which I use by the way) and play with those for a while. In time you will be able to judge if you need to adjust the length of the sticks (or not).

Note: you HAVE to know how your figures run in order to successfully use the sticks AND you have to learn how to tweak your bases to get your players to run how you want them to run. Even then you will find little things can occur that will be the difference between a complete or incomplete pass. You can have a receiver pointed in the correct position to hit the ball/marker but if he is on a hot spot on the field he can easily jump off course.

All in all you will enjoy using the sticks.

Don

thank you Geno and Don

I'll follow your advise, and simply make the sticks following Buzzball measures. I'll see with experience if it's working good or not.

I already found a great piece of wood to make it, I'll post results on my board building thread.

If any other big board owner using passing sticks comes here, don't hesitate to post your thoughts.

French Guy,

The Buzzball sticks are measured by yards on a 620. For example the red stick I believe is 6 yards and the white stick is 16 yards. The blue is 26 yards. So no matter what size field you play on, go by yards on your board. I am not sure of the exact yards but I can check for you and give you the answers on monday. I will also get yardage for the measuring stick "the red and white" also.

Default Great !

Thank you, I' d appreciate any help for that !

I found the yardage here :

http://www.miniaturefootball.com/for...ulation+sticks

Quote:
The referee will then measure the distance (center of helmet to center of helmet) from the quarterback to the intended receiver You can use a piece of string to measure or a thin piece of balsa wood marked at 20 yards and a full length of 40 yards.

If the distance is 20 yards or less a RED passing stick (6 Yards) be used to spot the ball on the field.
If the distance is 21 to 40 yards a WHITE passing stick (12 Yards)will be used.
If the distance is over 40 yards an BLUE passing stick (18 Yards) will be used.

I found the same measurements on another topic I can't find again

So I guess this is the "official" passing sticks lenght I should use ?

DImitri

EDit : according to the Buzzball video on youtube, I think the measures I found (40, 6, 12, 18yards) are good !

Just like in real football a tie goes to the receiver.
